 SPFL crowd statistics
Topic Originator: Swainy

Copied and pasted from elsewhere but thought it may be of interest to some.

"A total of 5,151,522 supporters turned out to watch their teams across all SPFL competitions in season 2023/24 – the highest figure in the SPFL era – with 25 SPFL member clubs reporting season-on-season attendance rises for league matches.

Attendances in the Championship impressively grew by more than 50 per cent – up from 397,373 in season 2022/23 to 609,823 in season 2023/24.

The highest percentage increase in support of any SPFL club was Championship side Raith Rovers, whose average support for its 18 home league games rose from 1,982 in season 2022/23 to 4,192 in season 2023/24.

That year-on-year figure for SPFL matches is a rise of 64,122 supporters on the previous record set in season 2022/23, when 5,087,400 fans attended SPFL matches – the first time over five million fans had attended games in the SPFL era.

A total of 4,746,052 fans attended games across the Premiership, Championship, League 1 and League 2, including play-off fixtures, in season 2023/24.

A total of 3,760,765 attended games in the Premiership in season 2023/24.

In League 1 215,260 fans attended matches, with 107,775 watching games in League 2 – the highest yearly figure for the Scottish fourth tier in the SPFL era.

A further 52,429 supporters attended matches across the various SPFL play-offs this season.

Another 405,470 fans passed through the turnstiles across the Premier Sports Cup and SPFL Trust Trophy competitions.

Stats last year showed that Scotland had 21.3 attendees per 1000 people at matches across its top four divisions – the highest figure across Europe.👏👏

This attendance per capita was over 65 per cent higher than second placed country Netherlands, which has 12.9 attendees per 1,000 people."

D.A are the number one!

Wonder how those figures would fair if the trend to include non attending season ticket holders in the crowd numbers.
Are they comparing like with like with the per capita figures?
Sometimes you can get stats to say what you want to say.

Weren’t Championship attendances largely boosted by Dundee United coming down and the Pars going up ?

Aye - swap out Dundee Utd for Livingston and the average for the Championship plummets ...........however the team stepping up from league one will have a far more positive effect on gates than Livingston............Falkirk wont be too far behind us in the attendance league, then a wee gap before the wee team...........

Falkirk will have a higher attendance this season than us. Another sad indictment of our current performances on and off the park. In fact, high chance both Raith and Falkirk will exceed us.

How do you work that when we had higher crowds than them when we were last in the same league?

How do I work that out? By looking at what we know to be factual at this time and understanding trajectory of the various clubs and their commercial and promotional performance. Currently Falkirk have sold 3500 season tickets already. Raith will be looking to increase theirs. Meanwhile an apathetic campaign for us will see us lucky to maintain what we had last year. I wish I was wrong but just take more than a cursory glance at what’s going on around us.

"How do you work that when we had higher crowds than them when we were last in the same league?"

We had the 9,000 plus crowd (which I doubt we`ll see this time round) which obviously they can`t match, and also had the bog crowd for the Queens game that clinched the title and for the trophy lift day v Clyde. Unless we win the league, I can`t see us doing that again. That same season they were on the back of a terrible season before and then saw us win the league by miles.

I think it`ll be quite close (we`ll get bigger crowds v Raith for example, and potentially could have more in the games between us since we have the bigger ground), but I wouldn`t be shocked if Falkirk had more through the gates than us next season.

I hate to be that guy, but we had an average of 6-700 extra punters in EEP over the Falkirk Stadium when last in the same league. It`s there in black and white (pun intended).

Our season ticket numbers are largely static and will likely be the same again. What will increase or decrease our attendance will be performances. Falkirk will get a rude awakening coming up a league. Raith will also get a shock losing the likes of Easton and maybe even their manager.

The likelihood of either Raith or Falkirk selling a considerably more is minimal but perhaps that doesn`t fit with the doom and gloom merchants on here?

You say our season ticket numbers are largely static - how do you know? There has been nothing from the club stating what it is like this season. From my experience a number of folk that used to go to games are waiting to renew or won’t renew this season. This should be a reality check. Both those clubs are on the up as proven by facts and figures, while we are unknown at best. Makes me heave saying that but just have a proper look. Like I said, Falkirk are over 3500 already. Think we sold less than that in total last season (can’t remember for sure).

Put it this way, if we repeat our dismal and embarrassing derby results from last season and perform likewise against Falkirk, no chance will you get those big gates you refer to. I’d love to be wrong and wildly optimistic like many, but look at the facts at hand, and the trajectory of us and those two clubs. Performances on and off the park, and the overall mood of the support. That should be a call for the club to get the finger out and insert some energy and enthusiasm through actions.

But aye, say it’s just doom and gloom if you like to make you feel better. 😂

Parsman, I`m referring to the past few seasons. We always sell roughly the same number. Our attendances are largely static too bar the impact when we have a bigger club or clubs in the league.

Perhaps the club are simply waiting until they hit a particular milestone before sharing figures?

Falkirk could get 2000 more fans per match and I wouldn`t care, as long as we beat them and finish ahead of them.

Ep.17 of East End Tales is out now with Andrius Skerla

Falkirk have just had an unbeaten season after five years in the wilderness and seven years below us in the league. Of course they have more momentum. That`s life.

We had similar momentum last year, don’t think we took enough advantage of that tbh.

Whether their big season ticket push (now over 3700) will help their team, (I note not many new signings there so far) we shall soon find out.

Meanwhile here….who knows 😂
