One of my earliest football memories was watching grainy, black and white footage of Real destroying Eintracht 7-3 in the 1960 EC final at Hampden. The Germans had themselves destroyed Rangers in the semi-final, scoring 12 goals over the two legs, which surprised many Scottish fans. Perhaps it was no real surprise since Real had hoovered up all the best players of that era and won 5 of the first 6 editions of the European Champions` Cup.
Last night`s win over BVB brought them their 15th combined title of EC and CL. How do they do it? In recent years, they`ve often been largely outplayed in quite a few ties but usually found a way to win. Last year`s semi-final v Man City was an exception when they were horsed 4-0 at the Etihad. Man City (twice), Liverpool and BVB and Juventus are just 4 clubs off the top of my head, whom Real eliminated after being outplayed.
Luck or skill?
Not your average Sunday League player.

Luck on the pitch is impossible to replicate and is regardless massively overstated in football. The best teams win most often because they are the best, they get some good luck at times and bad luck at others just as anyone else, difference is they are most able to take advantage of any good luck and most able to handle any incidents of bad luck. Luck isn`t actually a thing anyway and what is most referred to as luck is just mathematical probability.
You could talk of luck in when the gained royal approval, but still were given preference from Franco even when he stripped the real title, regaining the real title under a far more politically positive environment after Franco is also a big influence, there`s people all over Spain who support them due to being the kings team(even those in regions also with real teams! there`s little doubt IMO without the post Franco years that would be far less likely.

No club can be lucky all the time, but it can certainly be lucky in any given game. BVB hitting the inside of the post and the ball bouncing back into play was a case in point. Had that gone in, Real might have struggled. They were also lucky to get past Man City, so perhaps it`s fair to say Real are a tad fortunate to lift the CL trophy again this season.

A couple of points on the posts made by GG Riva and Pars4life1 about Real Madrid`s history.
GG says that Madrid won 5 of the first 6 European Cup finals. That`s correct, but what`s even more amazing is that they actually won the first 5 (1956-1960). I was at Hampden for the 7-3 match that GG watched on TV!
More significantly, Pars4life1 says that Madrid were stripped of the title "Real" by Franco, and had it restored under a more liberal regime - by which I presume he means post-Franco.
In fact, "Real" was removed from the club name in 1931 by the Government of the Second Republic. Santiago Bernabeu was a big supporter of Franco, and after the Nationalist victory in the Civil War (1936-1939) Franco RESTORED "Real" to the club name and the crown to the club badge. There have been no changes since then.
The Franco regime was partly isolated diplomatically in the 1950s and made a big thing of Real Madrid`s European Cup successes. It`s also rumoured that the government helped secure the signing of Di Stefano for Real Madrid when he was about to join Barcelona.
This lingering association with Franco still colours the feelings of many Spaniards towards the club. Eg, Barcelona`s rivalry is based not just on Catalan nationalism and anti-Madrid feeling, but also because Barcelona was a Republican stronghold during the Civil War. And fans of local rivals Atlético Madrid (seen as a more "working-class" club) sing "Hala Madrid, hala Madrid, el equipo del gobierno, la vergüenza del paÃs" ("Go Madrid, go Madrid, the government`s team, the country`s shame.")
FUN FACT: Franco was born and went to school in El Ferrol, which is where my mother and several aunts and uncles were born. The family folklore is that an aunt and an uncle went to the same school as Franco, but that may just be a myth!

Strictly speaking it was a free transfer but pretty sure he got an £85m bonus signing on fee.

The BBC report said he was getting a £128 million signing on bonus and £12.8 million a season.Sore one if he goes down injured at the Euros.
ETA.He also has a percentage of his own image rights on top of the above, just in case he was a bit short.
