Is a draw a good result for Scotland?

Probably although a Switzerland win would then see them likely be happy with a draw against us on Wednesday which I`d also take.
And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

I thought Switzerland would be weaker than Hungary so I thought beat the Swiss and draw with the Magyars - might have to reassess things now...

Aye, got 3/1 on Hungary this morning and thought it was great value. Not looking clever at the moment.

Draw on Wednesday makes it winner takes all v Hungary. A win on Wednesday really sets the cat amongst the cuckoos. Still in with a chance but needs big improvements in ball retention and aggression.

Don’t think either of these two looked anything special. They were both combative, set up well, had pace and dangerous looking attacking midfielders/strikers. Basically everything Scotland did not.
FWIW I think the Swiss are beatable but by goodness we need Scotland to turn up to have any chance against what is just an average team really.
What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

With the poor GD as a result of the first match and the Swiss win today, a draw on Wed no longer works. 4 pts can still be sufficient, but it has to be a W on Wed.

Sorry USMac I don`t understand. If four points is sufficient then why can`t it be a draw on Wednesday and win against Hungary?

TOWK, as I understand it, GD is first tiebreaker after pts. A draw on Wed would give the Swiss 4 pts, and they will most likely end up with a superior GD.

Yes, but we don`t need to finish 2nd to qualify.

A draw with Switzerland and a win against Hungary guarantees we finish at least third.
A win against Switzerland and a draw against Hungary doesn’t quite guarantee third place as it’d be possible - though pretty unlikely- for all 4 teams to end up on 4 points and we’d likely be bottom on goal difference. This happened to Norway in the 1994 World Cup.
4 points has always been good enough for one of the top 4 third place teams even with a shocking goal difference. Not guaranteed though.

I thought the commentator last night said that, in the event of teams being level on points, the first `tie-breaker` was head-to-head results?

Yes, that’s right. Goal difference is likely to come into play when comparing third placed teams though. It’s likely that at least 2 third placed teams will have less than 4 points, so 4 points and third place should be good enough.
If 3 teams in a group end up with the same points, then it’s points in games between those 3 teams that count and then goal difference in games between those 3. If these rules were in place in the 1974 World Cup, I think Scotland and Yugoslavia would’ve gone through ahead of Brazil as our lack of goals against Zaire wouldn’t have been a problem.

It`s all a game of chance with teams outside the top dozen or so but even the big teams can be undone. Let`s hope Germany have some goals left in the tank so we can focus on winning our games.

Hungary won in Germany in the Nations League, took 4 points from 6 them and finished above them in the group.Switzerland have lost one game in 15.
I`m not saying they will definitely take points from Germany but I wouldn’t be writing either off completely. We made the Germans look better than they are.

Assuming Germany win both of their remaining games, its hard to see how we would have a better goal difference than Switzerland or 2 of the 3rd place teams. This suggests we need to beat Switzerland to have a chance of going through.

There`s been no previous of a team with a win and a draw going out in 3rd. But listen... It`s Scotland we`re talking about!

At the last euros, Ukraine went through in 3rd place with only 3 points as did Northern Ireland and Portugal in 2016.
So 4 points should be enough. Tall order though.

Four should be enough, six might not be.
Have to play to win.

I think we should be aiming to have a few shots on goal before we try to achieve anything else.
