Apologies, I usually start a thread for the majority tournaments but been quite busy.
So , belatedly, here it is.
Currently Belgium 0 Slovakia 1 nearing half time.
Could we be in for the first shock of the tournament?

Belgium scored a decent goal but VAR did what it does and managed to find an infringement in the build up that not a single player on the pitch claimed for and not a single person watching noticed.
The slightest brush of a hand out by the touch line. A joke in my opinion.

The fact they have introduced sniko (cricket) technology to determine hand balls is crazy. Goal should never be ruled out based on dodgey tech like that - because the “snick” looked to be before it touched his hand 😂

You mean, apart from the Slovakia player who was at the ref claiming hand ball immediately?
He got an advantage, albeit slight, by using his hand (intentionally or not). VAR got the correct decision.

It`s the rule that`s the problem, not VAR. Letter of the law, it`s the correct decision. Don`t agree with the rule, but thems the breaks.

Regarding the disallowed goal. It’s like the VAR officials see the ball hit then net then immediately set about trying to do all they can to find something wrong with it.
The woman in the VAR studio talking about hand being in an unnatural position. Perhaps an official could demonstrate what the natural hand position is for a player who is moving at speed trying to maintain balance with a hefty defender shunting him. Presumably clasped behind his back??

Bang on.
I heard they used a “snickmeter” as used in cricket to determine than the hand did contact the ball.

and
Portugal Vs Czech republic (8pm)
From what I`ve heard Portugal are quite strong this time round.
Does Ronaldo still play or has he retired from international games ?

So they could all finish up with 4 points. The team that finishes bottom on GD would go out, while a team with 3 points in another group could go through.

Got what we deserved.
In a match we had to win we were fannying about passing it to the side and back then only made a concerted effort to actually win the game in the last 15 minutes.
Our best chance of progressing out a group since needing a goal v 10-man Uruguay and we a scared to go for it.

You would be raging if that was given against you.It wasn`t a foul.If Armstrong showed a bit more belief he could have got a shot away as was the case with Morgan.2 chances fell to players who had just come on unfortunately.

My honest opinion is that referees throughout the tournament have given free kicks for very soft contact and some very questionable yellow cards.
I felt a penalty would have been given in many games but Armstrong didn`t help his case in grabbing the defender.

Well a ref in realtime and in slow motion from multiple angles said it wasn`t so while it still subjective it clearly isn`t `ridiculous` that it wasn`t given.
And although my eyes were open

It was a penalty all day long whether you think it was soft or not. Contact made in the box and knocked Armstrong down. Scotland should have slowed the game down and taken the draw but instead made a mistake in the dying seconds and got punished. Turned off before the analysis but assume it WAS onside as it looked borderline on first look. Definite case that the likes of Shankland should have started or been on earlier.

I mean even if we got the penalty we would probably passed it all the way back to Gunn anyway, just in case we shot wide and gave away a goal kick.

I don`t know why Armstrong didn`t just step in front of the defender rather than jump in front of him, maybe just enough for the ref. to not give it as Armstrongs feet were both of the ground at one point as the defender hit him.

Definite penalty and a probably red card since Orban was already on a yellow.
The fact that we didn’t deserve it is irrelevant.

I don`t think it was a penalty. Yes, there`s a wee clip on the back of the leg, but there`s also a clear foul the other way as well with the jersey pull. What`s the ref meant to do, give a Scotland penalty and a Hungary free kick at the same time? I wouldn`t be happy if that was givein against me.
I`m also not as upset as Clarke as most seem to be. That`s a limited team, weakened severely by injuries. His aim was to stay in the game and, if we had to, push on when it opened up later in the game. I just don`t think we were quite good enough to threaten a decent team in those circumstances. Yes, maybe other options to adapt to injuries but I`m not convinced any of them would have been much better.

Seeing it again in real time, Armstrong could easily be offside, it would be an automated call that one. Ref could have waved play on with keeper and that would be the end of it, no flag, no free kick, no penalty 🤷🏻♂️ either way, we werent good enough for the 100 minutes.

No. No actually I`m not. I`m upset by our performance and venting somewhat. Best bit of the whole game was the graciousness of the Hungarian fans all around me showing incredible hospitality. More so than anyone gets on here for daring to show emotion.
I`ll be deleting my account on here soon enough, won`t have to worry about anyone giving a fck properly about the important issues soon and back to petty squabbles like before.

The pen was in the "I`ve seen them given" category. Scotland`s performance was hugely disappointing for all but the last 15 mins. I feel sorry for the Tartan Army. Their powerful rendition of "Flower of Scotland" gave me goose pimples. The fans deserved better - much better.

I don`t think anyone is saying we should have went all guns blazing and that we have a superb squad but the same could be said about Albania and Georgia and at least they had a go. We could have used the passion of the crowd and the anthems to make fast starts v Switzerland and Hungary, but instead tried to play a Guardiola/Hughes/McPake pass it about the back with zero movement style (which nobody else at the tournament except maybe England have been playing). I`m not sure if McGregor passed the ball forward once all night? And our crossing both from open play and set pieces was abysmal all night. The few times we did get in good positions the decision making was all wrong, as highlighted by two incidents near the end, one on the left where Armstrong got in a bit of a muddle and the other on the right where after Hanley`s shot was saved, Christie just chipped it into the keepers arms. Feel sorry for the guys who have spent their savings on going over there to see what, 3 shots on target across 3 games? Lowest cG, lowest shots on target, lowest presses one in the opponents half I`m sure I read. What`s the point in qualifying for a major tournament if you`re going to stink the place out like thst?

I didn`t see Pat Nevin`s comments but he must know something about rough treatment from defenders so his view has to be respected. I still think there`s a difference in standards between what refs decide is a foul outside and inside the box. Outside the box any physical contact seems to be penalised.

I agree with you there and I`ve definitely seen softer penalties given too. I was just a bit more annoyed that Armstrong seemed to dally rather than getting a shot away, which I think he could have done comfortably if he was more positive rather than waiting on the contact.

Correct. So we`re not having to add yet another innovative way of failing to qualify, we`ve opted for the traditional way of just not being good enough.

It would have still been on. We would have needed two groups with worse thirds.
Group C
Denmark beat Serbia.
England beat Slovenia by enough.
That would leave Slovenia in third with 2 points and a worse goal difference.
Group F
Czechs and Georgians both on 1 point.
It would just have needed Turkey and Portugal to beat them.
All academic and glad England won`t have the pleasure of knocking us out.

You can’t get pumped in one game, scrape two draws with virtually no shots and expect to get through
You should get through on merit and by winning games, and no one would deserve to progress in the above scenario
I’m guessing only the pub landlords will be disappointed that we’re out, certainly not those wanting to watch exciting attacking football

True, but if they hadn`t already won the group and needed a result they could have beaten them comfortably, imo.Georgia conceded 50 shots against the Czechs and Turks and were fortunate to have a point on the board after being completely outplayed in both.
