 Today`s Game DAFC 1-2 Cove
Topic Originator: ReturningParsFan
Date:   Sat 27 Jul 11:39

Trying to inject a little positivity into a depression...I`m adding 4 to today`s attendance. Me (first game of the season), my wife (first game for over 30 years), my son-in-law (first ever Pars game - he`s a Man Utd man) and my 6-year-old grandson (first ever game, and will be wearing his new Pars top). The wee boy is hyper excited, the wife less so...Hoping for a lot of goals for the Pars, which is probably very silly!!

Good man. I hope you and your family enjoy the game. I’m going along today too with, I hope, a positive mindset - mind you, I go to all Pars games expecting, naively or otherwise, that we’ll get a positive result. 😀

I’ll be there along with my son. This is going to be our 5th game this season having been along to St Mirren, Dundee, Forfar and Livingston. Yet to see a goal so far, typical we missed the Spartans game.

Always looking for a reaction and hopefully it’ll be nice to play well, great chances and get a couple goals and end with a win heading into next weekend.

Good to hear. The kids are tomorrow’s fans.

It should be an enjoyable game? Nothing at stake so both teams can play to win ?

I hope the wee fella enjoys the game.

Got to wrap the 1st team up in cotton wool today and let the fringe youngsters get some minutes surely.

Don`t want any more injuries and the opportunity to see the fringe players get competitive minutes doesn`t come around too often.

Do you play the kids and perhaps lose or do you go with your best side and get a confidence boosting win before the league starts ?

Meaningless game or not , The crowd , or lack of crowd, should be a wake up call . Probably over a thousand extra paying punters would have gone if we had a chance of qualifying from the group . The s**show v Forfar will have cost us cash we can`t afford to lose .

Safe to say none of our group are impressed. I`m actually shocked at how poor we are, totally lacking in confidence or ideas, players looking totally lost. Assuming Cove don`t improve, we could be looking at penalties, a wee bit of excitement for the wee boy!!

Is it possible to just accept relegation now to save us the hassle of actually playing this season? There is absolutely nothing happening here. We could play for 90 hours instead of 90 minutes and still not score.

Hopefully get the penalties and extra point at least some consolation :)

Unfortunately - that’s why a poor crowd those of us that were also at the other games especially Forfar at home saw exactly the same poor performance no real drive or motivation and mince tactics.

4-2-3-1, been in total control without creating very much.

O’Halloran had a few good runs at the defender.

Ngenwa playing very high up the pitch with Chalmers covering left back and has done nothing wrong but hasn’t done much when he has got the ball.

Wotherspoon not been in the game at all.

Mehmet could have had a deck-chair.

See much worse Pars teams.

Biggest gripe is that when we do get the ball into Wighton and he draws the central defender out, that’s when we need someone making a run in behind.

Better not be, as much as my laddie would like it, we`ve got a train to catch.

The last time I was in the main stand, not that I`m suggesting there`s any kind of link, we beat Albion Rovers 6-0. Hopefully the second half will be better.

It’s time for investment in the first team or we are a certainty to go down.
Thats as p*** easy a group as you could have wished for and we’ve been nowhere near qualifying even in second.

There`s no entertainment watching the pars. Play absolute mind numbingly boring football, concede terrible goals, struggle to score or even dominate games against weaker opposition. Barring major changes this club is headed back down to league 1.

The league cup is never a diddy cup and is now also the main pre season warm up
The pars have consistently in the past got out of the group stages and the bonus of getting a premier league team / tv game in the next rounds and boosting the coffers - BEFORE the end of the transfer window cannot be overlooked

We’ve had a really good record up to McPake and Germans arriving. Regularly won the group with a premier league team involved under A Johnson and S Crawford, even P Grant. From memory finished above Hearts, St Mirren, Ross County

Probably because the management said they wanted a good cup run!
Even on here folk go on about all these other teams last season got more prize money than us so we needed a cup run to generate more cash flow.
Or we have pretty much zero chance of winning the championship this season so a cup run would go a way to healing the failure of winning a league we really should be aiming to compete for.

If it isn`t then we need a lot more than a few signings

If we had beaten the other teams in this group and lost to livi then I`d probably agree that it was the board not investing that`s costing us. But we`re getting beaten by teams who Mcpake himself have beaten comfortably over his time here, but for us to go on this horrible set of results is his inability to get the best out of the group of players he has.

If he hasn’t been given enough money to avoid back to back home defeats to Forfar and cove rangers, we might aswell just padlock the doors and not bother playing this season. The blame for those results lies at his door, he has to get more from this team than those pathetic perfomances.

Mehmet, Wighton,Chalmers, O Halloran, McCann would all be lucky to stay full time once they are finished with us.
Bene’s legs have gone.
Todd, Fisher, Breen, Kane are constantly injured.
When you invest nothin into the first team in years apart from Otoo n Hosler, you end up with a squad nowhere near good enough.
Mcpake looks and sounds like he’s done as well

Zero up front, can’t cross a ball into the box, scared to shoot when the opportunity arises and a keeper that needs dropped ASAP

How is that kind of performance going to keep us in the league? Everyone else on league is scoring for fun. Fear next weekend and don’t get me started on Falkirk at home.

Look at it this way. Our away form is relatively good, and Livingston, like us, are on a downer. Somehow we get a bit of good fortune, a lucky goal or two, Mehmet saves 3 penalties and after one game we are top of the league. We start to believe and remember our last few games with Falkirk so we beat them and ----- sorry, I`ve just wakened up but what a pleasant dream.

Worrying times our leader on the pitch looks as if his legs have gone one instance being left on his erchie near the touch line.
Team has no pace and structure to their play,Cove second goal was same as Livingston goal played between two centre backs.

Going to be a long hard season, only bright spark for me was Sutherland who took his goal well.
Any way season ticket was purchased early doors in the hope that manager and board could turn this season into a better one than last.

But it hasn`t transpired that way so far.

Was at the game, thought we were okay without creating much first half, cove didn’t touch the ball. Second half started with more intensity and was killed with another Mehmet blunder. Second goal really poor from the defensive pairing. Great goal from Sutherland before time.

Only positives I would take is that the back four is the way forward, much more width and without many chances created it definitely suits the players better. Another excellent strikers finish from Sutherland, carbon copy of Spartans but on his left this time. Mention for Ohalloran who when played in the right position looks more useful than we’ve seen of him.

Negatives… not enough created. Players letting the game pass them by. Denis Mehmet still plays for us.

From top to bottom this is stinking!!

I just wonder if McPake will be given a script in what to say for his post match interview because surely his response should be “that was p!sh”.

Also, if McPake goes then what decent manager would want to go to EEP?
The board are just full of rash and cheap decisions, followed by plentiful of excuses.

Just home and trying to digest what I saw. Firstly, the grandson saw 3 goals. And heard lots of naughty words from his grandad!!!

Sutherland`s goal was beautifully taken, Mehmet sold the first Cove goal and the two central defenders didn`t cover themselves in glory for the second. Too many passengers, including the likes of Comrie, who I`ve always liked but who is now a very pale shadow of his former self. Wotherspoon was very disappointing, in what was a terribly negative midfield including Chalmers and Hamilton. Ngenywa wasn`t too bad and Richie-Hosler looked much better (as opposed to terrible) when he was eventually on the right wing. Otoo added strength to the midfield when he came on, definitely a player there. The rest? Probably covered by previous posts. I don`t think it was the formation that was at fault as much as players lacking confidence, being played out of position or not generally knowing their roles. The management takes a lot of blame for that. Very difficult to be positive about the league based on this.

Reluctantly decided to go today, we’re in some serious bother right now, there’s no getting away from it.

First half started ok, plenty of the ball but with Cove starting with 5 at the back you just knew it was going to be a long day.

Best chance was probably O’Halleron who went on a mazy run however did too much with it and lost it when he should’ve taken the shot early.

Rest of the game, was just so comfortable for Cove, we are toothless up front, no pace to our play in the slightest.

Mehmet, think he thought he was one of those seagulls, flapped at the ball looking to punch the cross away when it was a simple catch. He’s had a part to play in a good few goals we’ve conceded already this season.

I said to my mate, Cove had no shots on target up until they scored but always looked most likely to score, figure that out but honestly felt like it.

Biggest concern for me is Benedictus, he just looks off it.

I don’t place all the blame on McPake, there’s something not right with the Board and it needs weeded out quickly.

Put yourself in the shoes of the senior first team players.
You look at the league in the close season and you think we have genuinely got a shot at it if we can add some players? Our opponents are all pushing the boat out a bit but we have less players than we had last season.
Demoralising ?

Bene will no doubt be demoralised but would add that he has had more than his fair share of injuries over the years, he spent most of last season injured too, it could well be these are now catching up with him. There isn’t anyone reliable
At the back to bail him out either and certainly not poppadum hands between the sticks.

Shadow of his former self, like many others or to be honest many are playing like they usually do and it’s not good enough.

Not one player is in form, except maybe Sutherland.

Wasn`t at the game today. First time in a long time. My old man didn`t want to go either and he`s a man who would watch 2 dogs fighting over a tennis ball in the park. Last week however I could clearly hear McPake shouting bilious obscenities at Bene after the goal. There was zero reaction from Bene. It absolutely reeked of unprofessionalism and of a manger who doesn`t have a clue.
I suspect there was no reaction because Bene knows for a fact that McPake is going nowhere. The players don`t like the style or formations. There are some who definitely do not like being played out of position but know that it isn`t up for debate.

About the easiest group to get out we`ve ever had (weakest top seeds, pretty poor seeds 3-5) in a cup the board were saying we were targeting as a revenue stream if nothing else and we are only not bottom of the section because Cove played an ineligible player. This is Cove who lost 5-0 at home to Spartans by the way. Getting out the group would have got us at least £60,000 plus ticket revenue and possibly TV money. Even coming second and not making it gets you £36k. Finishing 4th only nets you £32k. pihs poor crowd today plus that extra £4k... it all adds up.

changes have to happen starting with him and his "staff", after that hope some wheeling and dealing can happen cause the squad whether its light or not is nowhere near good enough including the supposed "star" players.

There is clearly something wrong when a FT championship side loses at home to part time clubs. There was nothing at stake in this game other than a bit of pride. That said, you want to be winning games as there is no pressure. I am surprised at the comments made by JM regarding confidence. I don`t really understand why FT championship players would be lacking confidence when playing against PT teams at home. If that`s true it really doesn`t bode well for the season ahead.

I agree with others, the first 6 games are going to be key. We need to get a few god wins under the belt. The challenge to a good start are the injuries we are experiencing so early on.

Problem is GJS93, it looks like the budget is gone so there will be no "wheeling and dealing" even if we were to somehow find the money to lay off McPake, MacKay and the rest. Going by the interview after the game it`s a backup keeper and that`s ot for the league campaign and then cross all your fingers and toes we get some loans in.

Can understand some of the negativity but there are folk who seem to just love booing about almost anything that goes wrong on the pitch. Far too early for the ott negativity that some are pushing. The players need to get support. We probably should have won today with the chances we had. And some players did well today.

"How did we use up the wage budget on 3 players when about 10 left/money for Josh"

Given the losses we probably made last season, this season`s budget will be a lot lower.

"Far too early for the ott negativity that some are pushing"

It`s not just losses this season though, is it? It`s poor quality of football last season (and the season before but we were winning), lack of signings, not having a reserve goalkeeper, finishing second bottom (would have been bottom had Cove not messed up by playing a suspended player) that we could have finished top in, we could go on...

Can someone confirm if there was any hospitality today because all the boxes were empty ?

If so, why not, especially if we need money ?

With the discussion of budgeting and such for this season I would be greatly surprised if the budget constraints put on Stevie C were remotely similar.
He worked with nothing and over achieved in reality.

Surely Wee Eck and his cohorts have to admit the club is heading to the first division

I’ll maybe give my thoughts on the management situation later, so I’ll restrict my comments largely to the game.

Overall it was another hugely disappointing performance and result and represents possibly our most abysmal League Cup campaign in 50 years?

Again we had no sub goalie. Why couldn’t we list Collier for emergencies? It would mean he couldn’t play for another club for 6 months, but he’s not going to do that anyway. Is he injured? McPake suggested that the absence of cover is an issue. And I can believe it – if Mehmet is concerned about being injured then it is going to affect his performance – he might hesitate to come off his line or decide to punch rather than catch. Arguably this cost us the goal against Livi and the first goal yesterday and thus may have lost, what, £60K?

We seemed largely to opt for the “give the first choice starters some game time and a confidence boosting win” strategy rather than the alternative “rest up the experienced players and give the youth a chance” alternative. This failed.

We did start with 4 at the back in a 4-2-3-1. O’Halloran on the right, KRH on the left, Wighton alone up front. This was a change and I thought it might herald a more positive approach rather than the usual “keep it tight, then slowly press on the gas” approach we’ve adopted against Division One sides previously.

After an encouraging run from O’Halloran early on I did wonder if we’d regret him losing composure and the ball at the critical moment and so it proved. Other than a late, weak header from the same player and a half chance for WIghton after a high press prompted an error, that was it for the first half.

More of the same before we lost the goal which prompted some decisiveness – off went 3 “older heads” and on came Sutherland, McCann and Otoo and we finally started to play with a bit of urgency. I wonder if mixed messages about the status of the game, essentially treating it as a glorified friendly had some effect. Now it seemed more like a 4-4-2 with KRH seeming more at home on the right and an actual forward pairing.

We created a few half chances but nothing particularly troubled their keeper, then Tod played a loose ball, Bene missed his tackle and there was a huge hole in the middle which they walked through.

The goal we did score was pretty straightforward – McCann passes to a colleague in the box, he creates space for a shooting chance, and he sticks it in the corner. Seemed pretty simple to me – why don’t we do that more often? Possibly because of the way we are set up – I assume that support for the loan striker is meant to come from the midfield and the wing-backs but it doesn’t always materialise.

...continued

With the crowd being so low (and so quiet) you could hear the shouts of the players (they do shout a lot) and that provided most of what little entertainment there was. Bene was particularly vocal, which you’d expect as captain, and I guess this demonstrates his organisational qualities. He does seem to have slowed down a bit (maybe that’s why we normally give him two colleagues); Wotherspoon isn’t yet delivering (and is not lasting the games) both of which are concerning, as is Kane’s continued absence.

Not a lot to get excited about; more the opposite. Something needs to change, and soon.

Wotherspoon is just another of Mcpakes failed signings, we only got him because every club knows he is done , we would have been better keeping Paul Allan at least he could last a game out
