 Josh Cooper

Seeing reports on social media we’ve signed Josh Cooper following his trial earlier in the summer.

I never seen any of the games he was involved in. What’s everyone’s thoughts? Especially if you’ve seen him?

Hopefully he can bring something we’ve been missing

Was he involved in any of the games before the cup?

If not, he’s only featured in a closed doors game v Livi last week that they have mentioned.

Son n law is a Stirling fan. Loved him last season. Bit of bite along with skill. I saw him in one game - didn’t notice him but that’s cos I was watching the two defender/wingbacks who were doing well.

East Fife was pretty anonymous.
Cove, wasnt there so no idea.

hoping he is coming in as cover for someone like Tod to go out on loan and play with another midfielder coming in

Was at cove, tidy player certainly a bit different from what we have at the moment. Initially thought it was Declan glass in his looks and the way he played. Definitely in the glass/mochrie mould

There are always some hidden gems in the lower leagues. We signed Kyle Turner from Stranraer and he has had a decent career since then.

Really surprised if we’re going for an outfielder who was a bit part player at a relegated league one team last season. Looking at his stats he was more likely to come off the bench for them in the last 10-30 mins than start and we’ve all seen clearly how much of a step up the Championship is to league one.

Hopefully we’ve unearthed a hidden gem but I would rather see a proven Championship midfielder like Kerr McInroy come to the club.

I really don`t get this thing that if you played for a relegated club you`re tainted for the rest of your career. Burnley were relegated from the EPL last season but their players seem quite attractive to other clubs now.

I suppose the question about Kerr McInroy must be `why has no one signed him yet`? I remember being quite disappointed in him when we had him on loan from Celtic a few seasons ago.

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

It’s not just the fact they were relegated wee eck (thats minor) it’s the fact he rarely started for them. Andy Tod was raved about by the management recently and we’re now apparently signing a bit part player at Stirling who plays in his position? That can’t be good for his morale.

I am surprised McInroy hasn’t found a club yet. Same with Cudjoe - two players who would improve our starting 11 based on what I saw last season.

It will be up to Andrew Tod to prove he is worth a place ahead of Cooper if he signs. That`s how competition for places works! Would you not have even offered Cooper a trial period to assess him - just dismissed him because he hadn`t started enough games at Stirling in your opinion?

According to Soccerbase he started 17 and came on as a sub 28 times for Stirling, scoring 7 times (including a hat trick last season against Kelty). So more of a sub for than starter at Stirling who were relegated from League One.

Probably another player with promise but think we still need more experienced players at this level (or above) to come in.

It`s obviously difficult when you are short on bodies but Tod needs to go out on loan somewhere and be playing regularly for his development imo.I think at the moment he will struggle in the Championship. He is still only 18 with very little experience but has time on his side.
I haven`t seen Cooper play but he is 3 years older and has 50 first team appearances under his belt so perhaps he is further on in his development?

Didn’t McPake say he’s not looking to loan out Tod and Sutherland this season? I see your point wee eck, but we have Matty Todd, Wotherspoon, Andy Tod and now possibly Cooper who can all play in this position, whereas we are massively short in certain positions and need players capable of starting and improving the squad. Again hopefully Cooper (if he signs) ends up impressing because we desperately need more quality in the squad but is a player that rarely start at Stirling last season capable of this?

I can`t believe how blinkered some people are. McPake obviously thought the guy was worth a trial and he has assessed him based on what he saw, not the fact that he only started 17 matches for Stirling. Managers do this all the time - they back their judgement. It wouldn`t surprise me if he didn`t even check his stats.

If we do sign him it doesn`t rule out the possibility of signing someone else in another position. Is the loan window not open until the end of Sept?

Got to give the guy a chance, he’s been on trial so in my view mcpake thinks he can make a difference to our first team squad.

If he struggles and is not up to it then it’s another black mark against mcpake in the transfer market.

You’ve basically just written what I was thinking.

Like when any new player arrives, I want to see him do well. Not every signing is going to be a good one but I think in fairness to McPake he’s made some good signings. Newer signings still need to prove themselves.

wee eck, no one on this topic is blinkered just because they give another opinion from yours. The state the club is in just now, the aim is to ensure we don’t get relegated. Anything else is a massive bonus.

We badly need reinforcements to improve the squad. I don’t see anyone here writing off Cooper and I’m just stating facts about his game time in a lower league last season and the fact that we have a few attacking midfielders in our squad already and badly lack in other positions when funds have just been released.

Berkey has hit the nail on the head though. Hopefully he will work his way in to the starting 11, prove to be a good signing and help us get some important points on the board. Everyone deserves a chance and just because I’m not doing cartwheels about this potential signing, doesn’t mean I’m writing him off.

Agree with Berkey give the boy a chance. Would like a bit of experience in there but it costs money that we all know we don’t have much of.

Hopefully the loan market can help us.

I meant `blinkered` in that it seems to be all about stats rather than judgement and some folk don`t seem to accept that players can improve under different managers or in different surroundings.

Part of McPake's thinking might be that last season the midfield was weakened when Otoo and Hammy moved back to cover for injured CBs and this guy might give some back-up there. He seems to be more of an attacking midfielder too, maybe similar to Todd.

Best times watching the Pars were based on guys we took a measured punt on from the lower leagues and developed.

Would rather this than the old merry go round of folk chasing a pay day and one last contract.

If he`s been training with us since preseason started that means no other club has wanted him in 2 months.

McPake says he`s a real goal threat - 7 goals in 57 games in League 1 and 2.

Looks like it`s just beefing up the squad with more numbers rather than same quality or better.

You’d also think we’d have snapped him up earlier.

I’m glad we’ve secured a couple of signings and willing to give them a chance but these type of signing are as expected, cheap young players to fill a void essentially.

People on here like Berkey with the nothing to lose mantra will be the same people who will come on here complaining they don’t work.

Well, it seems he did have other offers but McPake convinced him to stay on until we were in a position to make him an offer. Seems to be more of an attacking option in midfield. We`ll just have to wait and see how it works out.

Can`t say he`s not been backed by bringing in a young loanee and a guy who was part time in League One last season? It`s hardly Chelsea levels of spending, is it?

Hopefully he gives us another option - seems like he can play off the left which might be ideal if we go back to 4-2-3-1, or be more box-to-box as well.

Slightly unfair Kelty….mcpake has been backed and it’s his team. Kane and wotherspoon won’t be cheap and the new replacement for josh will be on decent money. The likes of mehmet, KRH, wighton and others who have been kept on will be on good money for this level.

Despite being woefully short so far we had a player in o’hallaran who will be earning probably double what cooper is on warming the bench.

It’s a perfect storm of a bit short in budget but having spent what you have had poorly. This may ultimately be what will cost mcpake.

You used to have a dig at me every post. I backed off because it was not worth the hassle. I am sure there have been others. But you certainly have an unhealthy attitude …… to posters who don’t agree with you…..which means ….in my humble opinion you are a….. rocket….

There`s no Berkey fan club info, he doesn`t always take the positives, but he does always post his opinions

Disagree with your differing points , but for God`s sake just stop with your obession with posting against in every post he puts on......

Nope. If I disagree with him I`ll say so. Sorry if that upsets you and the rest of the clique.

It`s not a clique, it`s a recognition of you not having your opinions just a personal difference with you have with Berkey, it really doesn`t suit someone`s in their 50s....

McPake speaking him up in the pre-match interview. Box to box midfielder with a goal threat. Could be an alternative to Matty Todd in that role.

Here`s hoping both him and the new keeper can give everyone at the club and on here a wee lift. Think we all need it.

Was never going to be Chelsea spending but when you got out and got your "1st choice" in both left back and re signing Kane then he can`t say he wasn`t given anything. We also signed Wotherspoon with the latter 2 probably being one of if not our highest earners. He has used the money provided to bring in these guys. If it doesn`t work out I don`t think he can moan if he gets released from his duties.

Back to Josh Cooper - he scored a hat-trick against Kelty in a 5-0 win, coming on as a sub after 68 mins and scoring in 72, 80 and 90 mins. He also picked up a few yellow cards and a red card over last season. Make of that what you will.

That’s great news wee eck, gotta like a midfielder who is not afraid to get stuck in and let the opponent know they have been in a game, you really need that at this level where giving players time gets you punished.

One of my biggest criticisms of chalmers was his inability to actually make a challenge, just a tendency to back off and wait for the opponent to pass it. Last season he played most games and was only booked twice.

Hopefully this is a bit of a move away from the sportsmanship nonsense and a sign we actually want to compete more. If the lad is in the same mould as turner he might be a bit lightweight at first but he’ll fight for everything and has the engine this team so badly needs.

That’s just a silly comment he should have started every week , twice the player of any midfielder we had.

Can you imagine if a forum existed decades ago? "Why are we signing this McCathie guy from a team like Cowdenbeath"?

I’m with you on that Rusty!

I certainly wouldn’t look things through rose coloured glasses, the likelihood is Josh will need months to get up to speed. I highly doubt he’ll come in 100% up to speed. A bit like KRH… first couple of games he was overwhelmed (in league 1 btw) now he’s developing into one of the better players in the squad.

How many players have we signed who had an amazing record then turned out to be awful or vice versa?

You have to judge the manager. It`s not just about performances but how they fit into a team. It`s not the football world, but I`ve certainly hired people who didn`t have the best experience or education but were amazing because of how well they fitted the team. We`ve definitely had a few disruptive players!

Mcinroy was very poor for us. Can’t remember who he played alongside in the middle of the park though.

We’ve had some very poor midfielders or wide players over the years, so much that that they left the other midfielders badly exposed too.

He hadn`t played any competitive games before today so McPake probably wanted to ease him in gently. There seems to be a great emphasis now on `building up minutes`.

Yesterday many were questioning his signing, now we`re questioning why he didn`t start!

Others were questioning his signing. I wasn`t . McPake is too cautious. If he deemed the boy good enough to sign, get him in the team, rather than playing the same old which he already knows ain`t working.

Guessing hasn’t played full time football before so might take some adjusting but has likely been training full time with us for last few months.

Even if the lad is 60% fit he’ll be more mobile than half the team and have more in the legs than wotherspoon.

Could be the goal threat from midfield we’ve missed with Todd being injured.

There`s a good piece about him in the Courier. Two seasons part-time with Stirling while living and working in Greenock and getting a sports qualification made him appreciate the benefits of full-time football and made him determined to take his chance to get it.

Otoo’s goal, Ngwenyas roulette. Can’t think of anything else that anyone done of any note 🤷🏻‍♂️

Their goal was slightly unlucky. We won the defensive header then ball deflects of KRH and ends up in the bottom corner.

Cooper scrapped, moved the ball well and made life extremely difficult for opposite players. I don’t know what else we could have expected from him. I’m hoping with time he’ll improve but early signs are positive for me.

if he is cover for Todd, he doesnt have that willingness to run in behind and beyond the ball which showed on a few occasions yesterday and in the reserve game, maybe that will come in future games though.
