Shocking really ..Who in their right mind would buy a football club .. 30 billion won`t last long salton .. modern football players think they are film stars .. cap all wages to £500/week then most clubs would maybe survive

We are forever shaped by the Children we once were

What do people expect? Football clubs used to be for the community but now they`re owned by people who have no interest in the club other than making money. If someone will pay £60-70 then it`s common sense to charge that rather than £5. I`m sure it was said a while back that the big clubs could let people in for FREE and still turn a profit. It`s a complete disgrace.

As has been mentioned on various threads on here, the big issue we have in Scotland is having to compete with the English leagues and the billion pound TV deals. Why play for the Pars getting £1000 a week when you can play at a similar level down the road for £4000 a week? That`s why we either rely on home grown youth or seasoned pros headed for retirement. I suppose there`s the option of "do well in Scotland and attract attention in England" but there`s been harder since Brexit.

The bigger clubs in England have large waiting lists for season tickets so the club owners won`t really care about protests. Look at Aston Villa charging £90 for champions league games. The choice is watch top quality players in top quality stadiums at ridiculous prices or watch on one of the channels streaming the games. I watch a non league club who have sadly been relegated the past two seasons. The quality of the football is pretty poor but it is only £150 for my season ticket. I have recently watched a game at both Valley Parade and East End Park. The game at VP was an English League 2 game where a season ticket is about £200 if you are renewing and single match tickets are £20 if bought before match day and £25 on the day. I enjoyed both games with the VP game probably being of better quality although my previous visit the match was utter guff. I think what I am trying to say is you get what you pay for. In England every club outside the EPL is running at a loss in a lot of cases massively. The thing is the supporters of these clubs want better players, better playing surfaces, better facilities at the stadiums. Someone has to pay.

When you think about it, we pay £22 quid or whatever it is, to watch a fairly poor product. There is little in the way of skill or entertainment, I go but it`s been a while since I didn`t feel short changed. Probably an entrance fee closer to £15 would feel more appropriate.

Charging £66 for a Manchester United game feels about right when you think of the quality difference. It`s a lot more than 3 times the quality of product.

Of course, the game down there is pretty much dead for real local supporters, it`s all just a tourist spectacle these days

Not having concessions for kids seems pretty short-sighted.

Under a model where you need to encourage youngsters along so the come back when there older yes. but under a model where you get the next generation involved via tv and computer games, you can afford to wait on them coming spending a fortune when there older to get to once in a lifetime opportunity to watch `there` team.

£66 x 70,000 = £4,620,000 per game but kids can’t get a cheap seat…

Honestly, folk say “games gone” far too often but if we’re at the point where clubs can’t recognise the importance of accessibility for the next generation then the game really is on the road to gone.

Man U are pretty accessible to kids, on TV.

They`re not trying and haven`t for a long time built their fan base from local kids going along to games out of chance or even local dads taking there kids along

There is some context to this story. While I don’t condone United actions it’s not quite as clear cut as you are suggesting. There are concession tickets for every match at Old Trafford but those tickets are sold out for every match until the end of the season. United hold back 3% of total ticket allocation generally for day trippers (the ones who fly in spend a couple hundred quid in the mega store and film every minute of their experience on their mobile phone). The issue comes when they don’t sell enough of these tickets they are offered on general sale with no concessions at £66 a throw. I was at the game last night and as a STH it cost me £38. Now I don’t agree with the clubs action on tickets and the rumour is they want to get rid of ST’s in favour of a membership scheme so they can increase ticket prices by demand (see ticketmaster) and get more tourists spending more money in the superstore. As for public money to renovate OT he’s asking for local govt support to upgrade the surrounding area, roads, trams, housing not the stadium.

Hi Warrington, we used to have an office directly opposite OT. How much more development is actually possible for infrastructure in that area. I once arrived at the office before a game and the only useful way to get there was by tram as no taxi would touch that area before KO. Also with Media City and the upgrade to that area, is there a lot the local council can do?

Hi, the upgrade of Salford Quays has taken place on barren land through private enterprise (peel holdings who own the Manchester ship canal) over the last 30 years and is a remarkable regeneration project. But if you come over the canal and go to the borough of old Trafford the area has lacked investment for decades, approach roads are poor and much of the housing is low quality from the fifties and sixties. To be fair the area is already well serviced by trams but depending on the site of the new stadium these routes may need extending to accommodate larger crowds. The Manchester- Liverpool rail line is under development and a new station will be created near the new stadium. You’ll know from your visits that there are a number of large warehouses mostly empty built at the end of WW2 close to the current stadium site. Huge areas of prime development land, I understand this is primarily the area they want to develop. Guess who owns all of the warehouses….MUFC!
Added to that there is a desire to build on vast swathes of barren land around Trafford Park. Bringing new housing to the area close to the Trafford centre. So all in all lots of room and need for development and improvement.

I didn`t intend for this thread to become a defence of United`s pricing policy or even a pop at the club.

It was more a general observation that the Beatiful Game is being priced more and more out of the budget of ordinary people. It`s bordering on the obscene. If folk are happy to pay mad money to watch a game where there`s no guarantee that they`ll be well entertained and feel they`ve had good value, I salute you. At least if you go to the cinema, the theatre or a pop concert, you`ll have a pretty good idea that you`ll enjoy it. Football is different.

I`ve been watching the Pars since 1963. I wouldn`t like to guess as to how many games I`ve attended, but I do know that the memorable ones are etched on my memory because they only represent a tiny fraction of the total. There are so many more that I`ve long since forgotten - just as well as that would be depressing.

What we have here is elite clubs squeezing more and more money out of their fans and even though some can afford it, it doesn`t make it right. Part of the reason is the eye watering salaries they pay to their players. I don`t understand why the Football Associations of these clubs don`t cap these salaries at a sensible level.

Nobody has defended United pricing policy only added some context as it seemed to me the implication was that all tickets were priced at a ridiculous level, they aren’t. However I agree with you that long term the game is being priced out of the pocket of the average supporter the life blood of the game. As I also commented within 5 years there is a very good chance that season tickets will be a thing of the past at many premier league clubs will create membership schemes and a ticketmaster style pricing policy will develop where demand will drive the price for each game. A demonstration against the pricing policy including fans from United, City, Liverpool and Everton will take place this Sunday, they’ve had success in the past and were largely responsible for the decision to fix tickets for away fans at a maximum figure of £30, so hopefully they can achieve a similar result this time round.

I didn`t word my post very well, WP. I was aware that the fans of both Liverpool and Manchester clubs are collaborating in Sunday`s demonstration but the thread quickly became a discussion about United, as if they were the only fans who are angry and disaffected by these recent revelations.

You can be sure that where these clubs lead, others will follow....
