 Looking forward to Firhill
Topic Originator: Paralex
Date:   Thu 2 Jan 01:05

A new year has dawned and the first snowdrops are peering through the rain soaked soil. Everything down Halbeath Road way is as gloomy as the weather and yet in harmony with the snowdrops I find myself looking ahead to the joys of Spring and also the first game of 2025. Partick Thistle away. What could be better. A half hour stroll to Firhill. Meeting up with my PT supporter pal, join him in the home end, listen to his patronising commiserations even before the action commences, as he anticipates a Thistle win. But my heart is elsewhere. I look over and see the intrepid Pars fans who have made the journey and who still believe we can win and I take heart. Hope does spring eternal. We can do this. We came back and grabbed a point from Falkirk. Let`s grab a victory at Firhill.

I havenā€™t even seen us score in my last 5 visits to Firhill. Itā€™s safe to say I wonā€™t be spending up to Ā£60 on a day out watching us this weekend!!

In laws are all Jags and I`ve had to endure watching the Pars from the Jackie Husband stand for last 5 outings. NO MORE!

I`m dragging my daughter and her BF along to the Colin Weir stand on Saturday. Promised them the NW will be on form. They`ve been the only real highlight the last couple of games at Firhill. Actually them and the shocking refereeing.

Was a cracking win last season where it all seemed to go right including thistle having a perfectly good goal checked of as offside.

A point feels like the best we can hope for, thistle have picked up more than double the points we have in the last 5 league games. If weā€™ve to have any chance of escaping the playoff position weā€™re going to need to get something from games like this inc a few wins on the road.

Expecting tidser to be announced today, but with no new players heā€™ll have to set up the same way mccpake did, try and keep it tight for as long as possible and hope we get a break from somewhere or the opponents make a mistake and we get something from the game. I fancy it will be like this unless he gets some cash to spent on better attacking players.

Hopefully another cuffing for airdrie on Friday night.

Yes, I can feel your pain ubisanman. My PT pal, to be fair, does join me in the Norrie for our home games against PT, but that doesn`t change the usually negative result.

As far as parking is concerned, I don`t take my car there but I think parking is free in the streets between Maryhill Road and New City Road. Most Dunfermline fans I notice seem to have parked beyond Firhill to the North West of the stadium. I`m not sure either, if parking charges apply on a Saturday.

I tend to park at the flats behind the stand with the goal and walk back down the hill.

Tend to get parked easily and quick getaway too.

Park the bus just behind our keeper. Thatā€™ll do nicely.

As you pass Firhill on your right, take the left at the top of the road and there is a long slow winding road that is best to park on. I think it is Murano Street

Sounds like John McLaughlan knew from the start of the week he might be looking after the team tomorrow. From COWS -

Dunfermlineā€™s caretaker manager will take the team into Saturdayā€™s fixture away to Partick Thistle seriously seeking the clubā€™s first league victory of the season on the road. For John McLaughlan that has meant cancelling a family holiday to Lanzarote but he enjoyed his first match in charge and is relishing another. Speaking at lunchtime he told the website how delays in appointing a new manager meant he was called upon yet again:-

ā€œAfter the weekend, I got a phone call to say that the deal probably wouldnā€™t go through as quickly as theyā€™d hoped, so I had to cancel my holiday and take the team. For me, it was a no-brainer, the club comes first and itā€™s an honour and a privilege to still be in that position as caretaker manager.

ā€œI can go on holiday any time, so I made that decision on Tuesday and obviously took the training all week, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and today, so itā€™s been a good week and the players are focused for tomorrow.ā€

Do we think Tidser might be in the stand tomorrow with it probably being announced Monday due to the Kelty Hearts statement? Will we get that new manager lift and boost some teams get? Claw back some points on the teams above and narrow the gap.

I`m hearing that P Thistle have undersoil heating, which is just as well because the grass in this area is quite frozen and the pavements icy. By kickoff time, it should be 3 degrees.

I noticed today that metered parking in the Maryhill vicinity is 7 days a week from 8am till 10pm and they charge Ā£4 per hour. If you`re coming by car leave early and find streets with free parking to the North West of the stadium.

Maybe not too crazy after all to have been looking forward to this game. I think I even enjoyed it more than the 4-3 game at Airdrie two years ago. Maybe some of the gainsayers need a bit of humble pie?

Why?
There wasn`t much to suggest we could string results together, hadn`t won away in God knows how long and when posted we had no manager and the coach hadn`t announced he had cancelled his holiday.

Not a humble pie situation imo.

The game yesterday was effectively free hit for all involved. No pressure on anyone and very little responsibility. Had we lost, the conversation would have quickly turned to the next manger and we were not expected to get anything anyway.

The Pressure returns once a permanent manager is in place as both him and the players become accountable for performances again.

Come on man.......just admit you`re on the wind up with this? No pressure?! Free hit?! No responsibility?!

I`m glad the players didn`t have that attitude. They gave everything and I`d love to hear their response to your post. I think most would disagree, to put it mildly.

The majority of us think that was just about the perfect away performance.

I would think that was unlikely. You surely wouldn`t allow someone who is not yet an employee of the club to influence the team when it is possible the deal may not get over the line? I think John McLaughlin deserves the credit for the last 2 results. He may go down in history as the only Pars manager with an undefeated record!

Berkey is pretty accurate in what he says.
It was a free hit for the players and staff in place yesterday.
But it was great to see the players take that freedom and show how they can play. As I`ve said elsewhere, it`s now on them to go and back that performance up and show they can do it more than a one off game. We`ve had these sort of performances before and reverted to type the week after, however I will say yesterday felt like it was a bit different.

I didnā€™t nessesatilymean it how youā€™ve taken it da no 1.

They played with freedom as the unique circumstances meant even if they had lost the game and been poor it wouldnā€™t have mattered as much as it would have under mcpake given new man due in. Of course itā€™s to the players credit that they went out and got the result.

No chance was tidser involved in anything unless something has been signed and agree.

I think it`s really unfair to be anything other other than full of praise about the result and the performance yesterday. To say they only managed that because it was a "free hit" etc is pretty disrespectful if you ask me.

I`m not sure why some folk bother watching the Pars. There seems to be zero enjoyment to be had even when they win convincingly.

At no point was the result or performance downplayed... He told it as it was, on the run up, a team with 1 point away all season against a team unbeaten at home...Can imagine quite a few people had Partick on their coupon yesterday...

Could it be, much like his view on McCann, that you see the negative in everything they say?

I didnā€™t say they only managed it due to it being a free hit. I said it was effectively a free hit in the same way the Falkirk game was. We were not expected to perform and no one was under pressure as effectively thereā€™s no manager in place.

Not downplaying the performance at all which was by all accounts the best in the last couple of years.

But of course thereā€™s certain people who like to put a spin on it so they can have a go. They canā€™t help themselves then accuse me of the same thing.

Some amount of mental gymnastics and armchair psychology you go through to put a negative spin on literally everything. I can see where you`re coming from on this but there`s no such thing as a free hit when you`re in danger of being cut adrift in a relegation play off place.

Maybe John McLaughlan is the best judge of pressure in the lead-up to this fixture. Here`s what he said after yesterday`s game -

ā€œItā€™s been a lot of pressure because Iā€™ve been taking training and trying to do bits and pieces. Itā€™s been 24-7. Iā€™ve not had any sleep because youā€™re worrying about whatā€™s the right team. But when you get a performance like that and a result like that then it makes it all worthwhile.ā€

It`s incredible to me how some fans try to find any excuse to downplay any success we have.

Absolutely no chance is any game in this division home or away a free hit.

Ranger or Celtic are the only teams in Scotland I would ever put in that category.

Spot on, Berry. No way was that game yesterday a ``free hit." Every defeat this season has increased the pressure on the players (and the management team), another notch or two.
