Anderlecht
A week before Christmas 1969, Dunfermline Athletic took on Anderlecht in Belgium. It was a cold and frosty evening, and goals were in short supply. Doug Baillie captained the Pars and held the defence together although under pressure for much of the tie.
The match was decided by a headed goal from Johan Devrindt just before half time. This determined that the Belgians would hold a 1-0 advantage until the New Year when the second leg was played on 14 January 1970 at East End Park.
The Belgians featured their star player Paul Van Himst who at 26 years old had already played 50 times for Belgium and who had been ill for the first leg. It took only 9 minutes for George McLean to score a great individual effort, beating two defenders and calmly slipping the ball into the net. Edwards then hit the inside of the post from a penalty kick after Gillespie had been felled in the area. The ball rebounded and hit the goal-keeper in the face before being cleared. Immediately after half time, a great piece of Edwards skill saw Barry Mitchell bravely score with a diving header. The Pars were now in front in the tie and winning 2-0 on the night. . The play was frantic and swung from end to end. Anderlecht got their first goal in 73 minutes and added a second ten minutes later. It was now 2-2 in this game but the Fifers were 3-2 down overall. A late goal came to Dunfermline from McLean but the ‘away goals rule’ put Anderlecht into the quarter finals of the Fairs Cup as the aggregate score over the two legs was 3-3.
BK Hacken
The 16 August 2007 was a lovely summer’s evening. Dunfermline Athletic were playing BK Hacken of Gothenburg in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the UEFA Cup and things started very well indeed with Jim Hamilton scoring within a minute of kick-off. However, the experienced goal-keeper Roddy Mackenzie was forced off by a thigh injury after only ten minutes and replaced by promising reserve keeper, Sean Murdoch.(21). Neither side managed to dominate but Dunfermline had the better of things until an error by the inexperienced Murdoch gifted a goal to Hacken in 57 minutes. The home tie ended 1-1.
The return match in Sweden was on 30 August 2007. In spite of several early chances falling to Dunfermline, it was Hacken that went ahead in 27 minutes from a goal from Ari Skulason. Dunfermline continued to press but the Swedes looked dangerous on the counter. Having been booked for dissent in the first half, Hamilton kicked the ball away after 57 minutes following a marginal off-side decision and received a second booking for dissent which caused his sending off. I couldn`t remember him either, red-star- par, but a BBC report on the game confirms he was the starting keeper. I thought Scott McKenzie went `to San Francisco with flowers in his hair`!

Aye, they`ve lifted it from the BBC report, which is wrong.

Imagine the BBC making a mistake so long ago and not correcting it! Roddy McKenzie makes sense.

I remember an earlier Roddy McKenxie who played in goal for Airdrie in the 1970s, and who, according to Wiki, was born 30 years earlier than "our" Roddy. Were they father and son, as it seems a bit of a coincidence otherwise?
