 Media bias
Topic Originator: jake89

I thought during purdah the media had to be impartial in their reporting (I'd hope they'd always be this way but this is the UK).

Now I'm not one for suggesting the SNP are perfect (seriously, they have just as many numpties as any party) but Nick Robinson suggesting the NHS in Scotland is in a state is a bit rich when it's compared with the rest of the UK.

He focused strongly on missed waiting time targets. This was then reported in the press as the SNP (Blackford) bottling it as they're failing on health in Scotland even though the Scottish NHS is the best performing area.

It is performing better than the rest of the UK but it is missing legally binding targets that the Scottish government have set. I haven't seen the Nick Robinson interview but did he say that the Scottish NHS is performing worse that the rest of the UK? Or did he just ask Blackford why is the Scottish NHS missing targets that Blackfords own party have set?

They just might as well be closed

"He focused strongly on missed waiting time targets"

What's wrong with that? Is it not his job to hold politicians to account.

Is the standard for the NHS in Scotland to be marginally better than the rest of the UK?

It's not his job to lie that's for sure, likewise its not Andrew Neil's job to perpetuate the lies through twitter, then when caught out remove it without an apology. The man who wrecked the Hootsmin

VETERAN BBC broadcaster Andrew Neil has been condemned for retweeting a damaging doctored video about the SNP’s Ian Blackford. Neil hastily deleted the tweet from his twitter feed yesterday after the Sunday National contacted the BBC but did not apologise for the embarrassing gaffe.

The doctored video was originally posted on an account called News Addict and showed the BBC’s Nick Robinson interviewing Blackford about the NHS.

The video was heavily edited to make it look as if a flustered, stuttering Blackford had no answers to Robinson’s questions about the SNP’s record on health in Scotland.

Is that another doctored video? We had the tory's Keir Starmer one the other day.

It'll soon be the case where should we believe nothing we hear and only half of what we see!

I read it differently again, I thought perkins was finding it hard to believe anyone connected with the unionist press would do such a thing, especially Neil and Robinson

He didn't lie or ask him anything misleading. However, the point is he targeted the negatives in a way he wouldn't necessarily with other parties. It was then reported in the media as being a woeful response when the response was actually pretty good.

I suspect that during the campaign the interviewer will likely always focus more on the negatives than the positives regardless of who is being interviewed.

How about the press? Almost every newspaper has taken a stance on Brexit and the GE and are all putting their own spin on a variety of "stories" which have range from half truths to distortions to figments of some journalists fertile imagination.

I asked what lies has 'he' told in response to your comment that "it's not his job to lie" referring to specifically to Nick Robinson.

So what lies has Nick Robinson told? I'm not aware of any

Okay, perhaps a better example is the Daily Mail runnig a story based on a report that was banned by the Electoral Commission about how Labour will get the country in debt. This report was written by a party that has increased the national debt by over £1 trillion whilst pushing austerity.

The Conservatives continue their attacks on Labour's spending plans, with chief secretary to the Treasury Rishi Sunak telling the Today Programme they will cost the taxpayer an extra £2,400 a year. But he refuses to say how much a Boris Johnson government would spend

Daily Express carrying an article today about how the UK government was prepared to cut all UK phone lines in the event of a nuclear war in 1962, when tensions were high between USSR, Cuba and the USA. The government would scuttle off to underground shelters and leave the populace to their fate.

My first thought was whether they would need to have cut phone lines which had presumably been burnt to a cinder. But more offensive was the false claim that Harold Wilson- complete with pipe in mouth photo- was the PM in charge of all this. Many, but perhaps not the majority of Express readers, will know that it was a Conservative government led by Harold MacMillan which ran the country at the time.

I assume the point of the apparently pointless story was to link Corbyn with nuclear disaster through his pacifism.

Yes if Soviet nuclear warheads were raining down on Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee I doubt anyone would have cared that they couldn't get a hold of Aunt Betty on the blower.

Back in 1962, I am pretty sure that my family didn't have a phone!

EDITED TO ADD:

And while I think about it, my grandparents on the Isle of Barra didn't even have electricity...

:)

Back in 62 up in sunny Dollytown, only one person in our street had a phone and he only had one because he was a councillor, Dunfermline Council paid for its installation.

Cheaply built private student accommodation blocks are bad for using this sort of cladding apparently.

The block near me in Edinburgh (good luck pinpointing me with that info!) has it.

The Napier halls on Dundee Street have similar stuff. There's loads of these buildings using it.
