Just read today that in 1837 the first African American to become a doctor, qualified at Glasgow University before heading back to the USA to set up two pharmacy practices.
He also became a strong abolitionist as slavery was still being practiced in the southern states. He also had a high degree of fluency in languages and was treated as an equal in Glasgow academia.
Interesting story.

You might find this interesting then.

"Scots in the USA" - Jenni Calder

He also became a strong abolitionist as slavery was still being practiced in the southern states. He also had a high degree of fluency in languages and was treated as an equal in Glasgow academia.

There were African slaves who spoke Gaelic, owned by Scottish immigrants.

I'm currently reading the Kindle version.
