Have to get some Royals driving round here, speed limit being dropped on the road and cameras fitted.

Might slow down some of the rockets out here.

Announced earlier today that they will be erecting average speed cameras on that road as well as lowering the speed limit from 60 down to 50mph.

He could have killed the people in that car. Should definitely be prosecuted for dangerous driving. If he couldn't see as the sun was in his eyes why did he drive out in front of them. Unfortunately the royal family are immune from prosecution, they can even get away with killing wayward princesses in Parisian tunnels, so I won't be holding my breath on any action being taken

A splendid and noteworthy effort RSP, which deserves acknowledgement...

Why would he have had to have resat his test every five years for the last twenty five? No other elderly person in the UK has had to do that.

I'm not defending him it's just that your wrong Calpar. You don't have to go resit your driving test after the age of 75 or and age for that matter. An apology will suffice for calling me a dunderheid.

Correct..It is the license holders responsibility to decide whether you are still fit enough to drive. By law, you have to renew your licence when you reach the age of 70, and then every three years after that. Ninety days before your 70th birthday, the DVLA should send you a D46P Application for renewal of a driving licence.

Two Royals I can't stand - Philip and Charles. Don't mind the others actually.

Two peas in a pod - arrogant and disrespectful.

The people in the other car will be amply compensated to keep shtoom or take the blame.

I'm surprised at the ignorance exhibited by some otherwise erudite posters, who appear to be blissfully unaware that the royals are above the law.

Nicholas Witchell's report was a masterclass in obsequiousness. You couldn't make this up.

'Speed has been a worry on this road for a while.'

And then: The baby.....The old clown nearly killed a baby! That's the baby that was left out of reports, originally.

And then the fight back: D of E WAS injured, just didn't want to make anything of it.
Topped up with: He was momentarily blinded by the sun. (Genius, but 24 hours late, no mention before)
Nothing from the second car with the protection dudes who saw the whole thing. Why?
Because he wasn't involved in a collision. He was driving recklessly on the estate, probably way too fast, approached the give way, shat it (technical term), forgot that you brake and instead turned the steering wheel too abruptly, flipped the car which then appeared from the side road as a bouncing ball right in front of a car with a baby in it. That's my take. I think it's more credible than a car crash that turns over an (armoured, reinforced, probably) Freelander.
So the question isn't HOW DID HE WALK AWAY? but rather HOW DOES HE GET AWAY WITH IT? Oh, that's right, it was the Sun wot did it.......

"That cretinous parasite has been a liability all his days, never mind last 25 years"

All his days ?

He wasn't a liability during wartime Royal Navy duties - he was Mentioned in Despatches on HMS Valiant at the battle of Cape Matapan 1941, and two years later his action likely saved HMS Wallace under air attack. He was also serving in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered.

I don't take to him either BTW.

end of the day, if that was you or I (or our parent/grandparent) that pulled out in front of an on-coming car that caused a large accident - at best, we'd have been charged with driving without due care, attention or consideration.

we certainly wouldn't have lots of apologists & sycophants on the tv offering excuses about the sun being too bright, the speed of the road being too fast, how dangerous the junction is, how fit/active/alert we are, etc

the main thing is that the people in the car appear to be relatively unhurt.

according to the PSI, the purpose of the police is to, "The purpose of the police service is to uphold the law fairly and firmly; to prevent crime; to pursue and bring to justice those who break the law; to keep the Queen's peace; to protect, help and reassure the community; and to be seen to do this with integrity, common sense and sound judgement."

...so I fully expect charges to be brought

The silly old beggar should not be driving at age 97 - everything else that followed is a consequence of that nonsense.

Thankfully nobody was seriously injured.

Im not going to defend him because I have no idea what happened. I have no idea what his diving record is. Has he had other incidents?

Maybe he was blinded by the sun.
We dont know.

He should be subject to the same rules laws and punishments as anyone else.

Is it possible he is being pre judged because of who he is too though.
Would there be as much vitriol against any other 97 year old with a clean license and if the sun did blind them.

Not defending him. Just playing devils advocate.

Both my grandads have recently given up driving following small dunts as they knew they were not safe or confident to drive and they were only just approaching late 70’s into 80.

I know a few others who most definately shouldn’t be allowed to drive and they are especially dangerous driving in the dark at this time of year.

Would think once you hit 75 or have had cataract or joint replacement ops etc should have a fitness to drive or eye test of some sort.

Wouldn’t win any votes tho so will never happen and if you start taking people off the road the car manufacturers and insurance companies will have something to say.

Back to being drenched in my own negativity….

So he had a brand new armoured car delivered and was back behind the wheel yesterday. Is that one or two fingers up to all us plebs?

You'd think he'd have enough brain cells left to lie low for a while and if he doesn't his wife or another relative would have told him it wasn't on. What an arrogant old git!

It would also appear that no contact was made with the woman whose wrist was broken in the accident, despite a claim to the contrary by a statement issued on behalf of the royals..........
