My garage roof is asbestos cement mix... Everyone I've spoken to about getting it removed have all said it's a nightmare and very costly

I have had the garage roof removed and replaced but need to get the asbestos disposed off.

Wm Russell were charging about £840 +VAT.

seemed a bit steep for 5 sheets of the stuff.

Was that 840 for the entire job out just for the removal?

In all seriousness, if you bought protective face mask, could you just take it down yourself and bung it in a skip?

I wouldn't advise anyone to mess around with asbestos.
These services are costly for a reason... Let the experts handle it.
I've lost more than a few workmates from complications of breathing in that stuff in years gone by.

No. It gets in your hair, clothing etc. It's really not worth the risk. It only really takes a couple of fibres to cause issues. A lot of women who just washed their husbands clothes got asbestosis.
It's incredibly dangerous even in very small doses.
Always get experts to remove.

Where did I say I thought anything was funny?
The asbestos roof is in cement blocks which could easily be taken down (wouldn't think twice about it if it was just cement). Previous poster said his was put in a skip (he even quoted the price for skip hire) so I'm guessing mine would also end up in a skip and I'm perfectly capable of putting cement slabs in a skip...

So please tell me in my post where I was laughing at people dying as opposed to asking if wearing protection (face mask), could I not just do the job myself and save c1k?

I'm fairly sure (but not certain) that there's laws about who can handle anything with asbestos.

Depends on the grade of the asbestos. If it’s low grade, I’m sure that a ‘competent person ‘ is allowed to handle it and dispose of appropriately. Check with the guys at wellwood tip as they have an asbestos bin

Show us yer....

You put the asbestos in a skip, other people have to collect, empty and process the contents so you are exposing them to the harmful fibres. It only takes one fibre to cause asbestosis. So absolutely no way should you entertain that prospect.
If you watch the pros doing it you will see the extent they go to to prevent the spread of the fibres.

The older Artex ceilings, have asbestos in the mix.

New asbestos free Artex came out 1990, decorators complained it wasn't the same quality!

I have to say I am a wee bit shocked reading this. Here in Australia, you would be hung, drawn and quartered if you attempted to touch asbestos without a qualified team on hand and the idea of just throwing it in a skip is mindbogglingly insane.

Wherever asbestos is being dismantled, the workers have to wear appropriate protective clothing and the surrounding area has to be hermetically sealed in thick plastic. If you saw Breaking Bad, you will get the idea.

Ceiling tiles with asbestos content were identified in a local school some years ago - the "Ghost Busters" crew appeared without notice all tooled up ready for immediate action - this was during school hours whlie the kids and staff were in normal dress.

You could not make this up.

DPB , I apologise
I read your post as tongue in cheek about the handling of asbestos, many people I know have died a horrible death thro asbestosis (I am a Lagger by trade), My father is now suffering from this disease and cant walk 50 yards without sitting down for 10 minutes.

No worries :)

Hard to gauge sentiment sometimes when reading a short post!

A grand still seems really expensive, but there's clearly risks attached so will save up some money and get specialist in at some point.
