Loads of pupils sent home from Woodmill High today to get tested!
My daughter was ok as she was sitting 2 seats away in class as all pupils have been assigned seats🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️
The wee mans primary 2&3 positive covid results but he’s ok as he’s P7....
I can see schools getting closed down again soon tbh.

Schools will not close unless teachers go on strike. If schools close its a potential disaster.

Think they are just going off on the sick to get away from it. They need to strike and speak up about the situation. It’s definitely where the high numbers are coming from . How can you have kids in class with heating on full blast n windows open. Surely a breeding ground for germs/ cold ( coronavirus).

My daughter's school has had precisely no cases so it's not where the high numbers came from. Aberdeen had a spike a week ago and again this week. This was traced back to an outdoor pub venue which had the Scotland game on. They broke all the social distancing rules and we have the spikes. There have been around about 10 cases in Aberdeen relating to schools and even then it's not clear there was any transmission in the schools.

This story on the BBC website might just give a clue where its spreading.

Short version is Glasgow City Council felt they had to write to parents asking them not to have sleepovers for primary kids or parties for teens as track and trace showed these were a major factor in spreading Covid-19.

Parents in the article stating they had done this and would continue as they are 'entitled'....

Oh Jings

More than 60,000 people in the UK have now died within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test, official figures show.

A further 414 were recorded on Thursday, taking the total to 60,113.
Two other ways of measuring deaths - where Covid is mentioned on the death certificate, and the number of "excess deaths" for this time of year - give higher total figures.

Only the US, Brazil, India and Mexico have recorded more deaths than the UK, according to Johns Hopkins University.

However, the UK has had more deaths per 100,000 people than any of those nations.

The family gatherings apparently the source of cross contamination.

Makes one wonder about the fallout from the upcoming Christmas 5 day relaxation scenario.

It is sad that all businesses are suffering - but you don`t need to go to a gym to exercise physically, there are ample outdoor options.

For example, bike sales have increased greatly since Spring.

Isn't this what happens every year with flu? Your flu vaccine this year wasn't the same as last year. They look at what strains are most prevalent and immunise against those.

Knowing someone who's caught a serious dose of Covid doesn't half bring it home. A 3rd cousin of mine in Edinburgh got home from the Royal Infirmary ICU, on Thursday after a two week stay, which included a week on a ventilator, when he was completely out of it. I called him at home earlier today. He was sitting in an armchair but speaking was an effort and his breathing was audibly laboured. I asked him if he had dismissed himself from hospital when he's still clearly unwell. "No", he replied, "the doctors told me I was no longer critically ill and they needed the bed, as the queue was out the door."

He's 59.

Agreed, 100%. My wife’s uncle had a couple of weeks in hospital and he has little memory of most of it. We had the same experience as GG afterwards - when we called he was quite breathless and he felt abandoned at home. He was sent home to make space for others.

Good luck and very best wishes to all on here who have either had this awful condition or had to look out for an ailing loved one.

My wife works in a pharmacy. Her former pharmacist was very ill with covid in April of last year. Visited hospital but was not deemed ill enough. This was at the first pandemic height. She lost her taste, smell and was very breathless.

She recovered but was still feeling horrible in August. Has had to gradually build up to walking distances. This is a lady who had done several Ironmans.

In November she again felt a bit strange and went for another covid test. She was positive again. Again no taste, smell and once again breathless.

She is still feeling generally unwell but gradually improving.

She is 29 years old.

4 out of our family of 5 had the virus at the end of November. Only my 16 year old avoided it - I don't know how. He had 2 negative tests in a week.
3 of us have had only mild effects although my 14 year old son had headaches and high temperatures for a good fortnight. My wife has the dreaded lingering exhaustion though. She's a school classroom assistant and regularly does 15000 steps a day at work but during the holidays we tried to go out for a wee walk with the dog and she had to turn and go back to the car after 300 yards. I just can't see when she'll be back at work as she doesn't seem to be improving.
I can't help but think we've been lucky though. We're both over 50 and I wouldn't fancy catching it when the health service is as under as much pressure as it is now.

People can have genuine views on how COVID is being handled (like Rasta has), but anyone denying the effects of COVID must be either naive or thick as mince.

Who's been doing that?

Completely agree Rasta. Do as I say, not as I do. Which is why that idiot used up a load of NHS resources last year and why one of his posse somehow got away with travelling hundreds of miles after testing positive during a lockdown. The same guy who got off with driving to test his eyesight. The same guy who only got sacked/chose to leave because the PMs girlfriend doesn't like him. Our leader is a complete joke.

Oh, and add in his dad who repeatedly and publically broke the rules and then seemed to still not know them.when being interviewed by a woman who's husband has been in hospital for many months now with COVID.

``No one is begging for more restrictions to be introduced. Again if you want to hold together an argument, stop talking absolute nonsense all the time.``

Well someone must have been asking for more restrictions because they have just been announced by Nicola Sturgeon in the Holyrood Parliament. The Daily Mail is describing her decision as `beating Boris to the punch` so it is likely England will follow suit.

As reported, Ms Sturgeon`s remarks appear contradictory. She says Lockdown is clearly not working but if the situation were to stabilise this would be entirely due to Lockdown. Her logic seems to be if a policy isn`t working, then do more of the same.

He was using emotive language I agree.
But the majority of citizens still support Lockdown despite little progress after nine months.
As for supporting tougher restrictions, there have been posters on here asking that Nicola Sturgeon do exactly that, which she has announced this afternoon.

So in terms of fact Rastapari was on the right lines, even although he shows little sympathy for the valid reasons citizens might have for supporting Lockdown.

"But the majority of citizens still support Lockdown despite little progress after nine months."

Cases were extremely high in April 2020 and, after a few weeks of lockdown, Scotland went through a stage of no deaths for 20+ days in July/August. I am guessing that is why the citizens, in general, support the lockdown.

If the vaccine(s) had been developed in the summer, we would be largely out of this - assuming the vaccines are effective.

I think it`s difficult to construct an argument that the lockdown didn`t work in reducing deaths when there are numbers to prove the contrary.

For what it`s worth, I do not think anyone should be getting vital treatment stopped regardless of whether there is a lockdown or not.

From my understanding, whilst the local nhs is indeed, unfortunately having to stop some elective surgeries and outpatient appointments due to current covid situation, to the best of my knowledge there is NO planned stopping of cancer treatment or appts for urgent cancer referrals

What I'm interested in is where are these people who are having their cancer treatment paused. I.e. which part of the country.

Like Rasta I know several people currently undergoing cancer treatment in Aberdeen. None of them have had their treatment paused. One has also just started treatment.

Just interested why some people are having their treatment paused.

I think most of us do. It's clear that different areas of the UK are interpreting the rules and implementing the guidelines differently to others.

There's also no doubt in my mind that massive mistakes have been made when a little common sense, and indeed compassion, would have seen a different outcome e.g. trained nurses getting stopped from taking deteriorating parents out of care homes when they wanted to look after them.

As dark as it sounds, there's probably been a review of scenarios including deaths of, for example, people with cancer. No doubt questions around number of deaths due to lack of treatment Vs deaths due to covid. Essentially breaking humans downs to numbers of a spreadsheet.

It's been interesting hearing some in their 80s suggesting to immunise the workers first as they've lived their lives.

Hindsight is a great thing, but I hope people don't forget.

Breaking humans down into numbers in spreadsheets has been done for decades. What confuses me about this pandemic is that the rules on how we use these numbers seem to have changed.

If we `follow the science` to reduce road deaths, then driving would be banned. If that seems ridiculous, then we could do something simpler like banning men, or under 25s, from driving.

If we `followed the science` to reduce cancer deaths, then smoking would be banned, drinking would be banned, and people would be given free fruit, veg, and gym memberships by the government.

Science can provide us with estimates of probabilities. What we do with them is pure politics.

I`m not naive enough to say that lockdown has no effect on infection rates, but the clear panic from government is less about saving lives and more to avoid criticism for a massively underfunded health service.

I`m no fan of the cretins running the country, but they are in a lose lose when it comes to reporting deaths.

Not the case, I would have expected them to play it down, why are we just getting the actual deaths from covid alone, no underlying issues and not about 80 without having to go freedom of information requests?

Have you tried the Public Health Scotland and England data portal, Rasta? All this data is released. The Dunfermline Press pulls it's data from the daily cases by neighbourhood report (usually for some sensationalist click-bait to say there's a bad outbreak in ONE west Fife neighbourhood).

Because if you are some poor unfortunate who has been been made gravely ill through covid and it has left you so weak and frail that a case of pneumonia kills you while technically it`s the pneumonia that is the cause of death really it was down to covid. In the ONS figures that death will be registered as a covid death. If however you tested positive for covid three weeks ago but then unfortunately got run over by a bus the ONS will NOT register that as a covid death.

And although my eyes were open

And yet a local overdose was🤔
So there was a request done up in Tayside, from March to Decdmber MHS Tayside confirmed 6 deaths from covid alone, 6, there were more suicides.

Aren`t the figures for `excess deaths` published to illustrate the number of additional deaths which have occurred in a period compared to a `normal` year? These figures will include those who have died directly from Covid but also those who have died from another condition which may have been exacerbated by the existence of Covid or by resources being diverted from its treatment because of pressures placed on the NHS by Covid.

The local overdose wouldn`t have been included on the ONS figures unless covid was mentioned on the death certificate.
As for the Tayside figures, which I`ll take on your word as being correct, that would six deaths where only covid resulted in death. No other underlying health conditions contributed to the death.

Maybe the thought is that playing it down means people are less likely to do their bit by not mixing and enabling transmission than they do now?
When you think about it, Sunak's money off meals scheme in August, closely followed by the students returning to their digs were massive errors.

There are other countries, not run by the Tories, who seem to be tackling the issue in a similar way.

Supporting a lockdown and wearing masks doesn't automatically equate to being fine with multi-million pound contracts being handed out to friends of the govt, ill-equipped to deliver, or with govt aides ignoring the rules for a jaunt up north.

Based on the experience of actual doctors and nurses, it seems to be a disease that affects a lot of people. The fact they have underlying health conditions, in most cases, doesn't detract from the fact that they wouldn't be on ventilators, taking up a hospital bed, if it weren't for having Covid.

This obviously has a knock on effect for everyone as there's not much room in hospitals for many more people and the NHS staff are working round the clock to keep things going.

I don't like what we're having to do, but don't see much choice - short of opening things up and watching pictures of old people dying in corridors until they're all gone. Interestingly, that option would be quite 'Tory' as it would get rid of a bunch of people draining the state's resources. I've no doubt that Cummings has a spreadsheet somewhere, plotting the break-even point between cost of furlough and savings from paying out state pension and benefits.

As a total aside, we all had the chance to ensure there would never be a Tory majority in parliament (for as long as we're part of the UK) in a long-forgotten 2011 referendum. Only a third of those that voted took that opportunity.

Mask disposal bins... There's a business idea! Get the government to make it law that they are classed as hazardous waste. Every home and business needs them as it's illegal to mix this with general refuse.

Once again lying about statistics.
These figures are for England and Wales but the percentage of deaths with underlying conditions is 91.11%

https://www.ons.gov.uk/aboutus/transparencyandgovernance/freedomofinformationfoi/percentageofcovid19deathswithapreexistingconditionseptember2019to2020?:uri=aboutus/transparencyandgovernance/freedomofinformationfoi/percentageofcovid19deathswithapreexistingconditionseptember2019to2020

But let's actually talk about what these underlying conditions are that people are dying from.
Are there really that many people at deaths door and Covid is just tipping them over the edge?

Asthma
High Blood Pressure
Dementia
Down Syndrome
Diabetes
Smoking
Pregnancy.

These conditions I have listed are all counted as underlying conditions.
I'm pretty sure the vast majority of those people who die from covid but have these conditions would not be dying if they didn't catch covid.

We buy a bunch of wheely bins and some bleach spray, both as cheaply as possible, obviously. Cut out a little letter box for 'safe' disposal.

Stick a Union Flag on each one of them, write on a snappy phrase, "Cov-id, Bin-it, Beat-it", is my working idea, but I'm happy to change it for something better.

Then we join the local Conservative party (Rasta can give us the link to the application form), cosy up to the top brass at a virtual conference, pitch our idea and tell them we're ready to go.

Next thing, we're millionaires several times over and the Pars have bought the next two players off the Rovers' conveyor belt with our loose change.

I think you're being a little "conservative" Da Go. This an emergency situation so waiting 9 months till the conference is far too long. I'd be expecting to have paid for my first Barbados villa by then.
There are compelling grounds for an advance payment of at least £10m of working capital to buy overpriced equipment and sign up other like minded directors' companies to service level agreements to do the actual work involved. That way, if the pesky vaccine does work, we can pocket the cash from selling the assets, quickly fold the company and scarper.

It would be interesting to understand the reasons any anti-vacc people are offering in terms of how they're being pushed into being vaccinated. My understanding is that it's optional and no employer can force or hold it against you if you're not vaccinated - unless it's a role where you would require it.

For required vaccinations, this is nothing new. Doctors and nurses have to provide evidence of vaccinations in order to practice.

Some people have mentioned travel. Various countries already require you to be vaccinated against the likes of yellow fever before entering.

So it's understandable people may wish to hang fire and see if anyone drops dead or grows and extra limb, but there is no evidence of this to date other than sensationalist news pieces in the gutter press.

Well the forecast was true, it was all downhill from here, my wife admitted through NHS 24 on Saturday, followed by me on Sunday. Felt like I had been hit by a bus, no appetite, no energy. Admission system at Vic was great, plenty beds, space on the wards and top attention from medical staff. Just got home as my oxygen levels are ok, unfortunately my wife hasn't reached the same levels, maybe tomorrow! I've 3 days anti biotics to take and things should be ok🙏🤞

Right Hand Left Hand

Boris the Brave :-

He says it "now appears there is some evidence that the new variant... may be associated with a higher degree of mortality".

Sir Patrick Vallance :-

And on mortality - he says that, in hospitals, the outcomes look the same between the original variant and the new variant.
He says other data from those who test positive with the new variant suggests greater mortality but stresses that these data are currently uncertain.

Oh Jings :-

Police broke up a wedding party in north London, where they now say about 150 people had gathered.

Officers found the windows at the Yesodey Hatorah Senior Girls` School, in Stamford Hill, had been covered when they arrived at 21:15 GMT on Thursday.
Guests fled from the strictly Orthodox Charedi Jewish school when the police arrived. The organisers face a £10,000 fine for breaking lockdown rules.

The Met originally claimed that about 400 guests were at the gathering.
In a statement, the school said its hall had been leased out.

I wonder why the UK Government doesn't provide the daily number of new positive Covid cases as a %age of those tested. This is how it's reported in several other countries and provides a more accurate map of how quickly the virus is spreading.

Hi Dotnetters

Wee bit of advice please.
My father-in-law is due to get his vaccine on the 12th of February at EEP

He is elderly, frail and infirm and I need to plan his trip carefully.

Can anyone advise me where at EEP the vaccines are administered and if there are any hazardous steps en-route?

Stay safe everyone.

Common sense would suggest the East Stand, Dave. It has ample parking in front, no steps and is not normally in use, I don't think. I would imagine it will be clearly sign posted. If nobody confirms it, I'll try and find out for you.

You may well have, auldpar. I was merely guessing. The Norrie has less parking and is normally in use, but I don't think the players attend EEP other than on match days anyway.

Always cars parked in front of the east stand thru the week, guessing from the Ford garage next door, also the away teams use the concourse in east stand to change for games so would mean that at couldn't vaccinate on match days.

While the Norrie is only used underneath by the players, parking wise use normal match day car park behind North stand.

Either he did or he didn't. Remember though - the vaccine helps your body fight it. It does not stop you catching it. Not sure how many times that needs repeated.

If he had had it and it was less than three weeks, he would likely still be highly susceptible.

Sir Tom was apparently also fighting skin and prostate cancer and his family took him off to Barbados at Christmas as it was on his bucket list.

As said, he was in hospital for pneumonia.

Now, whether it was wise taking on a long-haul flight, and whether that contributed to his demise, I don`t know.

However, it seems as though the family realised that he did not have long left and decided to give him one last big treat.

I doubt very much whether a 100% efficient Covid vaccination would have helped him any. But, as said, Covid will be on the death certificate and there is no doubt that it will appear on the death certificate of others who would likely have passed away whether they tested positive for it or not.

The ONS will only record covid as a cause of death if the coroner notes it as being a factor on the death certificate.
If you test positive but then get run over by a bus it will NOT be recorded as a covid death.
I`m going to make a totally and uneducated assumption here and guess that very few people will actually die of covid. Much in the same way that many people who tested positive with HIV didn`t die from aids but complications arising from aids. Freddie Mercury died because of pneumonia but there is doubt that that particular ailment took him because of the damage that aids had done to his health.

`The Office of National Statistics just released its latest estimates on infection rates in the UK.

According to the ONS, one in 65 people in England had Covid-19 in the week up to 30 January, compared to one in 55 people who had the virus in England in the previous week.

In the last week of January, one in 70 people in Wales were infected, one in 65 in Northern Ireland and one in 115 in Scotland.`

These statistics which show Scotland in a favourable light never seem to get as much publicity as the statistics on the rate of vaccinations which were all over the media at the start of the roll-out.

I don't think it's been banned but they aren't going to approve it until they've seen the results of a larger trial in the Americas as they don't feel there was enough data on efficacy of the vaccine for those aged 65 and over. The latest trial has a bigger sample size apparently and should have better data as a result.

So we're very much experimenting right now so no thanks.
Some of you need due to medical reasons, I don't, I'm young enough and healthy enough to avoid the albeit small risk of serious side effects, no reason to.
And no I won't take it to satisfy anyone else either, hey maybe if it stopped the spread....or stopped you catching it, or meant a relaxing in the rules but we've been primed for it changing nothing.
I told you this year would be written off and you laughed....already touted.
And you think things are going to open in April?
That'll be gone before we even hit March and so on and so forth.
I'm also reading the government have stopped the office of national statistics from reporting deaths AFTER vaccination and numbers on adverse reactions, might not be true but if it is, you're really only getting one side of the picture.
I personally will not be playing that roulette.

I'll put this bluntly the science is bring Exploited, see recent British Medical Journal editorial.
I do follow the rules, not much choice...but hey you're an expert, tell me the necessity of McDonald's over gyms?
Billions of pounds to Tory donor start up firms, pur theft, if follow the science coming from Boris et al stick on your third mask and lap it up, you ARE thick for buying that.
I'll be blunt, you're no expert, should you really be giving out medical advice?
Let's follow science then...a simple one....vaccines are allowed with strict storage and distribution rules....oops here comes a shortage....now we can mix and match vaccines and timescales don't matter...science.
I'm sorry but science used to make sense.
Get fat at McDonald's.....sure....work it iff at a gym...no chance...just a bit stupid....thick....uf you like.

Just getting this right, Rasta. You agree with the science that your a low risk but not the science that suggests you should be immunised or the science that suggests the risk of an adverse reaction is incredibly small?

How do you know the science that suggests you're low risk is correct?

Completely support anyone who doesn't wish to be vaccinated, but that approach is not one endorsed by science. Whilst we can argue about long term side effects of vaccination, we can also argue about long term effects of NOT being vaccinated. No side can guarantee being correct, which is why I suggest it's up to the individual to choose, but make an informed choice.

Science didn't recommend mixing and matching vaccines and yet here we are.
Science doesn't advocate pausing certain treatments...and yet here we are.
How do I know the science saying I'm not at risk....easy....experience....and as I've stated, for me to be at no risk from covid to take a vaccine I am potentially at risk from.....doesn't make sense.

It's you lot that assume to question is to be "anti" as well, I'm not against vaccination, I'm against rushed vaccination with no idea of the long term effects, I'll just hang back and see for a bit, as is my right.

Isn't it the case that once vaccinated you reduce the risk of passing it on? In other words, whilst it won't stop you catching it, it will both reduce the extent of your illness, and your chance of passing it on. So it certainly seems a "civic duty" to get vaccinated. That said, it does concern me (without knowing the scientific facts) that this is a young vaccine.. I thought trials for these things would normally take years to ensure safety? It feels like the world is taking a calculated risk with this.

It takes a while for a scientific consensus to emerge. At the moment we have differing opinions from the experts which is only to be expected. It took almost 30 years before cholera was fully understood and before that, the majority view was that the disease was airborne or caused by poor hygiene. In Dunfermline this resulted in doss houses being fumigated and tar being burned in the High Street to purify the air.

I’m confident scientific knowledge, and a consensus of how best to tackle Covid, will emerge faster in our times. As things stand, governments are throwing their weight behind some scientific opinions and discouraging others hence Rastapari’s suspicion that rather than politicians following the science, the scientists may be badgered into following the politicians.

The way the vaccination programme has been reported in tabloid newspapers is as a point scoring exercise over the EU. The UK has pulled out all the stops to use as much vaccine as is available across a wide group of the population. That’s a reasonable tactic, but other countries have focused more on making sure the most vulnerable receive their double dose first- which is equally reasonable. Last week the right wing papers were crowing that Oxford vaccine would conquer all under the wisdom of our great leader; today we are told it may not be as effective against some strains but is helpful none the less. That is a bit of a climb down in a matter of days.

I`ve never believed all I`ve read and have always taken it at face value then considered that even if half was true I would evaluate it

However the vaccine is now a concern for me It would appear from various online sources some more reliable or more biased depending on your particular outlook
that the vaccine perhaps is now not as effective, that we will need another souped up version in the Autumn to combat the ever increasing clever virus variants that are determined to invade us humans

Therefore a simple question :-

Is it worth me driving a 45 mile round trip on Saturday and my wife a 65 mile round trip on Monday to get the current vaccine on offer

Any advice greatly appreciated

I'd say yes BPP. First of all, I'm not sure they advise which vaccine you will receive and secondly the studies still display a good degree of protection against the newest variant.

One thing people may not appreciate is that their flu Jan changes each year depending on what the expected variants are going to be prevalent that year.

I get the fact that the enormous world-wide resources will reduce the time, but are a few very short-term trials enough to "guarantee" safety? By the way I will almost certainly get the vaccine when offered it, but there is that niggle in the back of mind about it. That probably reflects the fact I'm generally risk-averse.

Absolutely, and is why I fully expect to take it when offered. I am putting my trust in the medical professionals. Actually, the motivation for me to take the vaccine is to help prevent me spreading it to nearest and dearest and the public in general, not for my own safety, as I've already had it - didn't get it too bad, but it's a snidey illness that hangs around for a long time.

The speed of the roll out reflects the sheer amount of money and manhours that have been dedicated to the cause.

Drugs/vaccines tend to take years to develop and gain approval because they're not nearly as well funded.

You can't even guarantee that paracetamol is safe for everyone. There's always going to be the few and far between cases where some unlucky soul will take a reaction. It's the case with every drug/jab/vaccine/medicine ever created.

Well, aye, but the risks of paracetamol are well known due to passage of time. The vaccines have not yet had that luxury...

I think Rastapari’s anarchist instincts are a very healthy starting point for any citizen under any government anywhere in the world. The announcements he outlined today are draconian and had they been proposed under a Corbyn government would have the Daily Express calling for a popular uprising, a march on Westminster to restore our historic freedoms. There have been regular utterances from SAGE and fellow experts that the Lockdown should NOT end even when the vaccination programme is well underway. Rastapari is correct to draw attention to a government which claimed that a short Lockdown would defeat the ‘enemy,’ then a longer shutdown, then a track and trace system, then a vaccination programme which, to no great surprise surely, is not capable of achieving total and absolute victory. There can be no total victory over Covid anymore than total victory over seasonal ‘flu but no government in the world will ever pass up the ‘temporary’ powers offered it by the populace. The UK public like most others have transferred power from themselves to the government in the hope of winning an unwinnable war: there can be no return to normality under this arrangement.

My response to Eck’s pertinent question would be not to become embroiled in a war you cannot possibly win. Covid 19 is already being superseded by Covid 21 and presumably many more variants in the years to come and shaping up, as I wrote many months ago, like The War on Drugs (started around 1970) and The War on Terror (circa 2001). Covid presents a serious health threat which has to be tackled and we all have opinions about how that can best be done. But exaggerating that threat, spreading fear through the populace and putting the country on a war footing with contradictory daily bulletins cannot be the way to do it.

I don`t see how you can protect the vulnerable without affecting everybody. I`m no Tory but they`re not the only government imposing lockdowns. Maybe you haven`t noticed but Health is devolved in the UK and we have four separate administrations following their own paths but all favour lockdowns, not to mention the vast majority of governments throughout the world.

These points have been put to you numerous times on here but you just turn a deaf ear. We can all rail against certain aspects of the restrictions but somebody has to make the rules. If it`s not the government who is it?

I've often heard the argument put forward about protecting the vulnerable, and letting the rest of society get on with it as per normal. Seems a fairly reasonable suggestion on the surface, but then I thought it through. Recall that this was put forward at the start of the pandemic when a vaccine was a distant dream. The strategy would have condemned perhaps 20 million people to house arrest, because the virus would be rife in society. The vulnerable would be afraid to leave the house, even the supermarket would be very risky, far more than a lockdown scenario where virus prevalence is minimal-ish and everyone is social distancing and masked up. And then you consider that these vulnerable people are in households.. So those household members would also need to be under house arrest (how many more people across the UK would that be?), otherwise they would inevitably bring the virus home from active society where covid is rife. So I fear that, arguably, the "protect the vulnerable" strategy could be worse on balance than lockdown for us all.

Thing is, I think it's either lockdown everyone "relatively mildly", or all vulnerable people plus their entire households are locked in. And for reasons in my earlier post I come down on the side of the former.

Re: the point that the vaccine changes nothing... That's true in the short to medium term, but things will start to look very different once all vulnerable people and more are vaccinated. Added to the fact that, by then at least ten million folks will already have had Covid (though surely that's an underestimate). Hopefully by the summer the discourse will be very much on what and when we open up. I'm expecting our office to be reopened by the Autumn. The vaccine really is our only way back to normality.

Thing is Milos it's already being touted that the vaccination will not change anything in the short or long term, we're being primed for permanent tiers.....my fear is obvious and I would bet a bolt on, wealthier tiers will enjoy more freedoms, justified by blaming the poor and using numbers on a screen 90% of the population won't even try and digest.

Rasta, I've not been privvy to the line of thinking that vaccines change nothing in the long term. I'd like to understand the reasoning behind that - maybe to do with potential lack of effectiveness, or continual waves of new strains that will take time to create vaccines for (just like what happens with flu just now). If that is the line of thought, then I suppose it comes down to what happens on the ground - how many people are catching it, how many hospitalised, how many ICU, how many deaths. The brutal reality is that as a society we may have to accept a higher number of deaths than we have been prepared to since this pandemic broke. Yet if that number is too high - if we all know someone that's been in ICU or died, then a portion of society shrinks away, not going out, not keeping the economy stoked, not going to the football. And the football along with a huge chunk of the economy (not to mention all the softer issues like mental wellbeing) are heading for serious trouble unless we can get out this lockdown.

How many times do you see freedoms like this taken...then given back?
What worries me are all the right folks making all the right money....there's barely a soul in our government about saving lives.
What one of these crass political thieves is going to clamour to everything they can to secure our freedoms and welfare as we had or even close?
What in their actions so far would indicate there is any will there?

Rasta, I think we're coming from fundamentally different places on the bigger picture. Whilst I absolutely agree there are snouts in the trough all over the place, and the thought of that angers and sickens me, I don't think there is a greater conspiracy about a power grab. That said, I will of course be watching the narrative over the coming months and seeing how it plays out. If we are still in a lockdown of sorts a year from now, and I felt the reasons were nonsensical, then I'd be on your page. But let's see what happens. As long as the numbers of covid deaths are "acceptable" (horrid phrase), I personally believe that all freedoms will be restored. Where things will get difficult in society is if we have a fundamental split in the judgement of what number of deaths is acceptable, in which case the question of whether to have a lockdown, and it's extent and nature, is going to become an even hotter topic than it is currently.

The phrase ‘acceptable number of deaths’ is one that will have to be faced. If you asked the average UK citizen about how many people died in 2020 they would understandably assume it was the worst outside wartime. Every newspaper headline, every editorial, has emphasised the carnage that has swept across the country. This is so misleading as to be incorrect.

The deaths per 1,000 UK citizens was 10.16 last year, a big increase on the preceding years and would doubtless have been higher without attempts to restrict infection by tactics such as Lockdown. However that ratio was considered ‘acceptable’ for nearly all of my life in the UK. In fact until I was 50 years old the death rate per 1,000 citizens was always higher, the peak year being 11.9 deaths per 1,000 in 1978.

So why the panic? Well without Lockdown the numbers might be much higher I will be told, perhaps coming close to the rate recorded during what is called Spanish ‘flu. Maybe that is so, although society did not shut itself down in 1919 to the extent of today. I rather think the explanation may lie in the phrase ‘Stay Home and Save the NHS.’ This is such an obvious piece of Orwellian language it should have been denounced at the outset. It is not a citizen’s job to save the NHS, but the job of the NHS to save the citizen who funds it.

I don’t think it’s the death toll that worries the government so much as their incapacity to deal with those who catch Covid. The provision is not there when numbers increase quickly and this may even apply to those unfortunate enough to die from it too. It’s not the death rate that matters so much as the presentational horror of citizens dying on trolleys in hospital corridors or bodies having to be stored in cold store warehouses. ‘Winter of Discontent’ headlines are their real fear.

Sammer, I'd not be so quick to assume that the average UK citizen thinks like that. I'd be more inclined to think that folks on average believe we've "kept things in check". Other than that, I think you're spot on. In fact, I've often thought about the hospital capacity like road capacity, except instead of queuing cars we have queues of people on trolleys in hospital, in many cases dying a most undignified death. And you wouldn't want to be that person who takes a covid downturn just after the last ventilator has been taken. The Government have been fighting first and foremost to avoid those pictures on the evening news, not fixated on keeping absolute numbers down. And a continuing source of bewilderment for me is the lack of a more accurate figure than the bizarre "deaths within 28 days of a positive result" shown on every night on the news. Surely we can do better than that? Even if a sample of deaths can be investigated in detail by doctors so that we can estimate with more accuracy. It's as if that number may turn out to be... "disappointing", and it would risk losing the public backing of lockdown. And with NHS capacity being as it is, the rush hour is never far away.

I hadn’t thought about the possibility for ‘sampling’ in order to establish cause of death. Since it is clearly impossible to carry out a post mortem for every single death I agree it’s strange such a policy has not at least been considered.
Trying to ascertain death numbers in the UK is no easy task. From the outset I realised that excess deaths is the only reliable figure to work from since it is undeniable; other figures are no doubt of great help to medical statisticians but even for them skewed by subjective opinion about cause of death.

I don’t think the panic reaction to Covid, which is pretty much worldwide, is some clever ploy to seize control of the plebs. It’s more an awareness by rulers that by following neo-conservative policies- and these are largely worldwide- you run the risk of public services like health being overwhelmed in an emergency which this clearly is. If or when that happens the game is up, so Orwellian slogan- Save the NHS- has taken front stage even although it is really a contradiction in terms.

In logical terms this NHS slogan is as reasonable as my car insurance company telling me during icy weather to ‘Save Aviva, Stay in the Garage.’ The whole point is I paid premiums based on your actuarial experts, so if my car is in an accident on an icy road I expect you to fulfil the contract. This breach of contract by governments cannot be admitted hence the emphasis on vaccines which are, to continue my metaphor, obviously useful but no better than a set of snow tyres.

It's been extended to 60 days, so with that mind, how are we ever getting out of lockdown?
We'll still be here next year, only worse with less rights, I'll take bets.
And today people told not to book summer holidays here or abroad....they don't much trust this vaccine do they...locked dow all year...and most of you lot will lap it up and justify it....that's the frightening part.

How long have the lower leagues got? Below the championship I would imagine without fans etc they will need the 21/22 season to be back to normal.

As for championship a bit longer. Might manage through to 22/23 season. Most clubs at this level have subscription TV to watch so can weather it better.

Above championship most will survive.

What this may do is reduce some of the ridiculous wages and transfer fees that are going about. It already had an effect on the last transfer window.

To degree I agree Moviescot, I reckon we have this season and next.....if nothing changes, and I'll take bets it won't, it's goodbye for most clubs outside the Premier League.
But hey you'll have English football and McDonald's so all good.
We're not going to have much left at all and people will still be barking fof harsher lockdown rules, they've got us begging for it, not going to lie, makes me sick to my stomach.
Tories too, just adds to the disgrace.

Rasta - despite all the noise coming from the government I think the 2021/22 season will be back to normal, or something very close to that. That might be too late for some clubs, but hopefully most can get back on track quickly. I know you are far less optimistic than me about this, but I think the summer will be turning point.

All of the nonsense from the government, including the crazy fines for people who import the virus from abroad, will disappear pretty quickly once the numbers start to look better. Then they will try to position themselves as our saviours by letting us do things.

I don`t understand why the governments of the likes of New Zealand and most of Australia aren`t overplaying this situation so that they can crash the economy or why the public that live there aren`t begging for harsher restrictions.

Or why we had fewer restrictions in the summer/autumn when the numbers decreased.

For what it's worth I agree completely with the assessment of the government and the way they've tried and succeeded in monetising the pandemic.

The whole PPE contracts for mates is mucky at best. We can only hope it all comes out and those involved are hit hard. It's sadly unlikely to happen though.

As for freedoms and liberties taken away and never returned? Nah.

You watch much Australian news?
Their attitude to the corruption going on here explains it adequately, they even went as far as to calling "the great reset" for what it is, Sky news Australia did not hold back.

I have family in Australia, but don`t watch much Sky News Australia.

I think most of us agree that the Tories have seemingly thrown contracts around to their mates rather than those most disserving. You can`t have voted Tory any fewer times in your life than I have. I just think it`s a separate issue.

A member of my extended family runs the main Covid ward in one of the UK`s major hospital - if you want first hand experience. We went in to lockdown as the virus kills lots of people from certain demographics. If we didn`t do something drastic, they were going to be dying in hospital corridors - if they even got there.

The reason we reduced the restrictions in the summer and autumn, and even let some people back in to football stadiums, was because the numbers got much lower.

The reason we are where we are is because the numbers rose, the virus mutated and, if we didn`t do something, the poor folks trying to treat patients at the coalface - rather than pontificating behind a keyboard - would be completely broken.

I sincerely hope the vaccine does what it`s meant to i.e. enables people`s body to fight the virus so they don`t get seriously ill. If that happens, and hospital numbers drop, I think it is fanciful to suggest that the public will just accept mass restrictions remaining.

DA I share your hopes, I really do but I think the monetizing and politicising of covid will be too powerful a draw for the snouts.
Will people accept it long term? Mate it's already been a year and barely a whimper, this year already being touted as written off, people will accept the little they get and be happy with it, that's what scares me...

I`ve not called you mental. I think there`s a semblance of an idea which I can relate to with some of your posts and I think it`s dangerous just to swallow whatever version of the truth that is spoon fed.

I think your presentation style is more likely to entrench the views of others who initially disagree rather than persuade, but that`s not really a big issue unless you`re trying to get elected for something, and I am guessing you`re not.

My overall take on the saga is somewhat different, that`s all. I think it`s virtually impossible to shield those that need it most and open up the country for the rest of us. The theory makes 100% sense, I just can`t envisage a way of life where it could become a reality.

I also think that with the majority of nations, from all different political landscapes, going down the lockdown route, it`s fair to say that it`s probably the best option out of this. Some countries have implemented that very successfully and we`ve seen things open up there already. Some have not been so successful so far, but I think the vaccine will move things along.

All in all then, I think we will be back at EEP at some point next season. I suspect it won`t be just like it always was come August, but I think we will get there eventually.

The thing is, the UK isn`t the worst for deaths in Europe. They are near the top, but Belgium and Slovenia are ahead at the moment.

I can`t wait for this pandemic to be over so that the government can be exposed for the charlatans that they are, without them being able to use the virus as an excuse or a distraction from their failings.

Everyone will have a view and there's little point arguing as no-one is going to have it spot on.

Completely understand that some may wish to hold off having the vaccine or may not wish to have it all. I'm also sure there will be potential for some perceived coercion to get the vaccine.

The main thing I see is particular media outlets and politicians being wholly inappropriate around COVID. Petty boasts around who has fewer dead bodies, who has vaccinated more people and who has the better vaccine. It's all typically ill-informed and very crass.

It probably doesn't help that COVID has hit during Brexit. Both sides of that aren't portraying themselves in a particularly good light.

On the point that the "deaths within 60 days of a positive test" stats will keep us in lockdown for eternity, the vaccine should (well I bl00dy hope so anyway!) get that number right down, on the grounds that there will be drastically fewer cases to begin with (recall that a vaccinated person is less "spready", and of course less likely to die). And assuming there is some common sense, what's happening on the ground in hospitals needs also to be taken into account. Should the government lie about stats to keep us under control, we'll that's a very different ballgame that i honestly can't see happening.

Milos they're already doing it, look at the billions been stolen for Tory donors.
How many deaths have been recorded as covid that were nothing to do with covid?
A friend of mine did a freedom of information request in Tayside, how many deaths attributed to covid alone....6.....yep....at the time....6, way less than the "official" figures being used to lock people down.

Had a wee look to try and find the FOI that was made to Tayside NHS.
I assume this is Rasta`s friend who has made the request to several heath boards in Scotland. As far as I can see they weren`t satisfied with the answer given by Tayside or other regions with the exception of Highlands and Islands health board which gave figures far in excess of six. Perhaps others will be able to find the Tayside figures that were revealed by the FOI.
Anyway here is a link where you can`t drill into all the different types of FOIs.

I think "contracts for pals and relatives" is nothing new - covid has just presented the latest opportunity. I honestly don't believe the government are over-egging the stats to keep that opportunity going, they are projecting when hospitals will be full based on their models, and using lockdown as a way to avoid that eventuality. But as I mentioned previously, that statistics is essentially meaningless - how we haven't made an effort to get a better number is beyond me. And if there is a better number that is being hidden from us, I want to know why. As for "pure covid" deaths, I'd be interested in knowing more, though that could also be a meaningless stastic if covid is deadly in exacerbating underlying conditions in huge numbers of people. Anyhow, this will all be a moot point when case numbers and hospitalizations start to fall significantly due to the vaccine (as I said, hopefully!!) and calls to ease lockdown grow.

I saw an FOI screenshot being shared on Facebook about a month ago showing the quoted 6 for Tayside and requesting 'only covid deaths'.

There have been comments on here about government figures being 'massaged' but I can't help but think the same is happening on the other side of the debate here....

On the problems with 'only covid deaths'...

1. I believe that the majority of deaths (not just covid) will have more than one item listed as 'cause of death' so the wording of the request instantly excludes a huge number.

2. It's also worth considering that as we all get older we sadly tend to pick up chronic conditions along the way. I saw something years ago saying that 80% of those 65+ will have a chronic condition of some kind. Obviously that chronic condition could contribute to your ability to fight covid or be aggravated by by the virus and would therefore be listed as one of the causes of death. Again large proportion ignored.

That`s exactly the point. Covid doesn`t tend to kill off completely fit, healthy, young people with no medical conditions.

Unfortunately it does kill off plenty of people who are older, overweight or have underlying conditions (whether they know about them or not). Without contracting Covid, these people could well have lived many more years.

Of course he won`t be punished.
He didn`t do anything illegal. He just acted unlawfully!

I think they know this from the start. The best case scenario is that they get away with it, and the worst is a slap on the wrist and maybe losing a cabinet post (but keeping your job and MP salary).

Imagine if us plebs could just help ourselves to the contents of the till in Tesco and give it to away to our neighbours, then the worst that happens is you need to change your job title. It would be a free-for-all.

Forgetting the third T. It`s the testing part of the test, track and trace that has taken up the majority of the 22 billion Westminster has allocated to its TTT system. This figure includes the frequent testing of all front line workers. 22 billion does seem excessive though that figure hasn`t been reached yet as that is the total sum allocated. Tried to find figures for the cost in Scotland for our similar scheme but the nearest I could find was an FOI that said the numbers weren`t available for Scotland.

I think 22 billion is hugely excessive regardless of how you look at it. This is more than three times the entire annual cancer treatment budget of the NHS, and it doesn`t even include any Covid treatment. Our kids are going to look back at this whole period in years to come and wonder how we managed to screw things up so badly.

I should point out that I am obviously not saying that testing is pointless. The testing of some front line workers is clearly necessary, but that would be a relatively small part of the 22 billion.

From the Beeb :-

Tony Hancock going to gaol ?

A firm is being investigated by the UK medical regulator after it was awarded a £30m contract during the pandemic.

Alex Bourne - who used to run a pub near Matt Hancock`s old constituency home in West Suffolk - made vials for Covid testing through his firm Hinpack, which had no history of medical goods.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has confirmed it is now investigating the company.

Mr Hancock has previously said he had nothing to do with the contract.

The MHRA said it took "all reports of non-compliance very seriously".

The Guardian reported Mr Bourne had offered his services to the government via a personal WhatsApp message to the health secretary, saying they had known each other for years.

Vaccine passports are hardly a revelation.

As pointed out at various times way further up this thread, there are several places that you need to provide proof of vaccination for things like yellow fever before you're allowed to travel to them.

If it means getting back to normal, then what's the problem? The more people vaccinated, the less chance of mutations appearing that can escape the vaccine and put us back in the same situation we're in just now.

This is not the government insisting this. It is one plumbing company in London, it will only apply to any new employees.
I think it might be reasonable if plumbers are expected to go into vulnerable peoples homes who were not able to be vaccinated in order to safeguard them.

I'm not entirely comfortable with this but if the company can justify it on safety grounds then so be it.

There may also be the possibility they want their employees to have a reasonable level of intelligence and this is a way of weeding out those not meeting the standards expected.

SIF it’s a government review into how vaccination certificates could be used in England with potential for employers to write the need into contracts for new starts or businesses limiting entrance that have close contact (eg football crowds).

Suppose the question is whether you consider Rastas ambivalence to possibly spreading Covid to those that cannot have a vaccine (assuming a waiver is available to those that have a clinical reason to decline) is a fair reason to exclude individuals or whether you consider the risk reduction through mass vaccination is a sufficient mitigant to allow outliers full access.

I suspect that while take up is high at the moment this will become a problem as vaccine offer reaches younger age groups who refuse for various reasons such as the invincibility of youth or tinfoil hat wearing buffoons or concerns about long term effects. If the declines are sufficiently high to generate risk then I personally think too bad use certification to keep them out - but not everyone will have that view. We already send smokers outside to prevent harm to others so they can get their avocado on toast delivered and watch fitba on tv.

I know it might sound stupid, but I don`t get the obsession with SARS-CoV-2. Viruses, and vaccines to help prevent them, existed before 2019 and hardly anyone gave a crap.

All we should be doing is encouraging (not forcing) as many people as possible to get vaccinated, then we can get on with things. If the vaccine is really 85-95% effective in stopping severe cases then once most over 60s have been vaccinated it shouldn`t even be in the news any more.

First time in donkeys I caught her talking and to be fair the question came up more than once. The rational for the extended lock down is that they still don't know what impact the new Covid variants will have so rather than use the criteria for the previous tiers they're looking to collect more data as they slowly ease the lockdown.

You might disagree with that approach the question was asked and there is a reason for it.

yet the roadmap allows for foreign travel before this country is on its feet and "normal" with pubs open and gigs and fans at events etc with as per above zero being done on the measures that are already in place to "close the borders". Really concerned about all those new variants coming into the country.

Provide evidence of doctors having videos of concerns about lockdown effects being taken down.
I don't believe you cause I have seen such videos on Facebook. There are legitimate concerns that we do need to be talking about and taking steps to mitigate as best we can.

I'm going to hazard a guess any videos taken down went further and were full blown conspiracy theory that just happened to also talk about a real consequence of lockdown as well.

Was interesting to see yesterday some fruit loop in Texas claiming Bill Gates was responsible for the "fake snow" that they couldn't melt with a lighter that turned black when trying to do so.

While there are many things to not like Bill Gates over his vaccine programme for Africa is not one of them.

Professor Mark Woolhouse, chair of infectious disease epidemiology at Edinburgh University, and one the FM`s advisory team, has told Holyrood’s Covid-19 Committee that the virus has never been close to elimination.

Sturgeon has repeatedly claimed it was during the summer and blamed the upsurge on incomers.

How very dare he, what does he know?

Sadindiefreak you don't exist after your little stunt, no mention of the to and fto that led to our conversation, private conversation.
Do one, I give not one ounce of fecal matter about you or your opinion.
Bye now.

There was no too and fro before and you know it you liar.
I will post the whole conversation again if you like with the swear words blanked out and everyone can see what a lowlife you are.

Edit:
Actually I don't need to post whole thing to show you are a liar.

Previous contact was 31Jan 20.
I reached out to you on 19Dec20.
So no too and fro...liar.

Your lucky i don't trawl, clearly forgotten some other topics eh.
Do one.
You're an irrelevance to me as I would hope I am to you.

Go on then provide any evidence there was any conversation outside of .net that was between Jan 2020 and Dec 2020 before when I contacted you.
You can’t cause there was none. You are a total f****** liar.
What "other topics"? You have absolutely no integrity.

No he is lying about any previous conversation happening.
He is telling me to "do one" when this is a public forum and I am perfectly entitled to challenge any misinformation he posts.

After the conversation he then made a comment on here about me going "crying" to him before when I fact checked him on something.
I refuse to be intimidated by him, so no I will not let is go when someone is lying about me.

Pretty sure if someone was lying about you you wouldn't be so keen to let it go either.

No there wasn't.
Provide evidence then. What "other platform?" I've shown there was no contact after Jan 2020.
No I will not do one.
This is a public forum I have as much right to be here as you do.

You are indeed very sad...our conversation came abou after numerous to and fro's and I'm not remotely trying to intimidate you, grow up.
Anyway, back to you being irrelevant to me, I suggest you give me the same status.

But like that screenshot you have saved on your profile, let me tell you I'm easy, keep it if you must child but what was I supposed to say, you escalated this, not I.

Post what you want, go for it, just don't cry if I ignore you.

I had already forgotten about it because you made an "unreserved apology "
Then you brought it back up again.

There was to too and fro before.
You are a liar.
Your "unreserved apology" was work SFA.

I will continue to debunk and challenge any bs you post and agree in the unlikely and rare event you post anything that is true.

I'm happy to leave this as is for now but both you and I know you are lying and it shows exactly the type of person you are.
Bye.

OK I'll bite, you started it again after my apology, yeah it shows a person that A...in the first instance did not know what issues you had, I also expressed i was sorry you were going through that...
Now kindly just get to wherever, you are of no concern to me and your opinion is not shared amongst the great many friends I have, now please, do one, you're getting ignored.

Is that a mental health slur, considering the very definition of sadness is emotional pain characterized by feelings if sorrow, sadness, despair etc.
Shoddy stuff.
