To be honest, as much as I detest the rest of the family, I didn't mind him that much. Seemed to have a decent sense of humour going by some of his gaffs.
Although, I guess when he was 18 years old and started grooming 13 year old Lizzie that might have been seen as being a bit dodgy. Especially with his uncle being an alleged paedophile

RIP - he had a good innings. No need for turning it into an agenda against other family members. No one has control over other family members and their alleged actions. It is still someone’s husband, dad, granddad, great grandad.

Rest in peace Philip. Clear to see that he dearly loved and was a rock to his wife of 74 years, a father, grandfather and great grandfather. Supported a fantastic charity providing young people with skills they might never of had.
Those things should be celebrated today

The D of E award is a fantastic scheme. Schools should make much more of it. I got my gold in the BBs. It was one of the key things that helped me turn round a life that could easily have gone the wrong way in my mid to late teens.

I think he was one of the most misunderstood of the clan, possibly due to his sense of humour.

No doubt he sneaked in to East End to see the Pars when his ship was docked at Rosyth before repairing to the East Port Bar for a post-match blether with the locals.

He joined the RN at 18 in 1939 and served throughout WW2 - doubtful if he had much time for "grooming" on a battleship.

Mentioned in Despatches for his service at the battle of Cape Matapan 1941 - a capable naval officer by all accounts.

I think the detractors do get that, to be fair. But I think the distinctly mixed reaction on here is an appropriate counter to the bizarre overreaction from the MSM.

I don't think it's much of a tragedy when a 99 year old racist who never wanted for anything dies.

I didn't mourn for Saddam or Gadhaffi's families either, and they were left in much more precarious situations when their patriarch died.

If I had experienced allegations of an unsavoury nature being levelled at me or members of my family in the past, I wouldn’t be on a forum such as this spreading similar allegations, founded or unfounded. Others obviously see things differently.

The figures will be artificially higher due to the 10 hours solid coverage on all three primary channels, and big chunks of Channel 5. At least the ever dependable Channel 4 was reasonable.

When I checked, the same coverage was on 4 BBC channels: one, two, Scotland and news, with BBC 4 showing a message that broadcasts had been suspended. Total overkill. Should have been a few hours on BBC one, with rolling coverage on BBC news. Chuck in a few tribute programmes later on.

I don't have much time for the Royal Family. It's not their fault we have a monarchy but it's surely an anachronism in the 21st century. Warrior kings leading their subjects into battle is consigned to history. The Queen is a mere figurehead with no powers, but at least she acts as an ambassador for the nation and is an unwitting tourist attraction for mostly American tourists.

It's much harder to make a case for the rest of the Royals, swanning around in "a life of service." Take Phillip, a most arrogant man, with an opinion on almost anything, totally out of touch with ordinary folk, as his many notorious gaffes testify. The British media gave him a fairly easy time by and large - perhaps they had to be careful about what they revealed? Foreign media frequently carried stories about him having a string of extramarital affairs, for example. I don't recall these being aired here.

He lived a good, long privileged life. What's to be sad about? My dad had a far far harder life and died from cancer aged 67. He'd still be a few years younger than Phillip if he was alive today, so I won't be shedding any tears for the Duke, even if he was somebody's dad, too.

According to the Piers Morgan/Daily Express view of life, the BBC is a liberal intelligentsia elite completely out of touch with the common folk of the UK. Stop paying your licence fee everyone. Piers Morgan as Tommy Sheridan of the BBC Poll Tax.

Yet... when Eastenders is cancelled all this sees to change. Apparently the patriotic former red wall of Hull would rather watch Eastenders than an obituary to Phil the Greek! Who would have ever thought that! BBC2 viewing figures were down 56% due to wall to wall fawning over our consort.

Maybe the liberal elite have a greater grasp of what the people want than royalist bumsucker Morgan and his inherited wealth.

It would be interesting to see how evenly or otherwise these complaints were distributed around the UK. I think it's generally accepted that some parts of England and Wales look on the Royals more benignly than we do here in Scotland.

I feel the media coverage and outpouring of grief for this controversial and often tactless man is well OTP.

If you think this has been bad - wait until HMtQ passes and a full major league state send off beckons and all aspects of the pre-planned operation kicks in.

A contact of mine in the military recalled the scenario when the Queen Mother died - his office fax machine went into overdrive and fired out around 110 pages of orders etc. Fortunately they received a warning heads up in advance.

Apparently these went to everybody and their dug in the Armed Forces admin chain.
