 BP’s profits
Topic Originator: Milos Drizzle

Q3 profits announced at 7.1 billion round pounds. Must be a nightmare for them, as that’s double the same quarter for last year, and they are on record as saying that unexpected fluctuations in income is problematic for future investment decisions. A good answer would be to immediately tax these gross and “unexpected” profits, a win-win for both BP and society (as long as the Government do something morally justifiable with it).

They also made an unexpected loss of £18 billion in 2020. That said we probably should tax them a bit more now as the billions we already raise from these companies is going to dwindle away as the world moves away from hydrocarbons.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Ah, so between 2022 and 2020 it’s just a £10 billion unexpected net boost in profits :)

How much does the government tax a litre of petrol ?

Much more than the BP markup I suspect ?

Isn`t it about time politicians made the point that paying tax isn`t necessarily a bad thing?

There are enormous loopholes meaning it`s easy to avoid tax. Anyone working as a contractor knows it`s very simple to ensure you pay way less tax than a PAYE employee. That`s the small potato stuff.

Look locally at companies like Amazon and all the house builders. They`re 100% not paying what they should. Clever splitting of accounts and subsidiaries to ensure they pay the minimum. None of it is illegal, which makes it worse.

Depends how it is used.
