Back to Questions What are the criteria for promotion to the SPL?

Top team automatically promoted as long as its ground qualifies for SPL status.

The play-offs (bottom SPL and 2nd and 3rd 1st Division) are dependent on the top three in 1st Division ALL having 10,000 all seater stadiums and meeting the other requirements. If any of the top three don't shape up there will be no relegation and the SPL will select the best placed teams who meet the criteria. Currently only Airdrie and Dunfermline meet that with St Mirren and Raith Rovers only just falling short. Livingston don't yet, but will by the March 31st deadline. Morton, Falkirk, Clydebank and Ayr United would never make it with their current grounds and ICT don't have the cash (as far as I'm aware) to upgrade Caley Stadium sufficiently. It's worth remembering that ground sharing has not been ruled out and could well be allowed especially if the club in question is in the process of building a new stadium.
