THE TROJAN HORSE

Date: Friday, 19th Mar 2021

As a general rule, Celtic and Rangers serve the interests of Celtic and Rangers and not Scottish Football.

We were assured that,if the Colt teams of Celtic and Rangers were allowed into the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup (the competition formerly known as The Irn Bru, Bells, Alba, Ramsdens and Petrofac) the crowds would turn out. 389 watched Rangers meet Dumbarton.

Neil Doncaster was effusive in complimenting the loyalty of Scots football fans and the engagement clubs had with their communities in the years prior to the pandemic; then foisted this nonsense on the Championship Clubs, while ignoring the considerable hostility to the inclusion of the Old Firm.

What was this REALLY about? The fact Eire, N Ireland, Wales and England were drafted in was the clue. It had all the popularity of knotweed. It was and is a Trojan Horse designed to massage the entry of Celtic into the Premier League or both Rangers and Celtic into the proposed European Super League.

Belgium`s leading clubs have agreed to merge with the Dutch League and create a BeNeLeague. Belgians fear that it will favour their biggest clubs eg Anderlecht, Club Brugge and Standard Liege (sound familiar?).

The Old Firm have long pointed out that Swansea City, Cardiff City, Wrexham and Newport Co play in the English League system. Oh and the biggest Belgian clubs would, kindly, allow their Colt teams to compete in their lower domestic Leagues.

The SPFL are to vote on the entry of Celtic and Rangers B teams with two teams from each of the Highland and Lowland Leagues to make the fourth tier 16 clubs. Players in Colt teams could not be over 21 and they could not be promoted. B teams do this in Germany, Portugal and Spain. It may pass as the League 1 and 2 clubs stand to gain £100,000 over five years though it must go before the SFA too.

The move away from Reserve football has been a major issue. It was here a teenager could come up against an adult player who was off form in the first team or returning from injury. The onus should be on the Old Firm to develop their players. The Scottish Supporters Network, meanwhile, has invited you to vote on the proposal.

However, it comes against the backdrop of major European newspapers claiming a European Super League is coming. If so, the Premiership would continue but in downgraded form.

Many believe it could lead to a renaissance in Scottish Football as clubs like Aberdeen, Hibs, Dundee Utd, Hearts etc could realistically mount a League challenge with the Gates and sponsorship emanating from that.

Where would Celtic and Rangers be? Big names in the game (Rummenigge, Wenger, Perez, Strachan) concede they would be in the second tier or at least Celtic would. There is a fear it could do the same damage as happened with Major League Baseball in the USA with all the clubs outwith the European Super League becoming feeder clubs.

A huge legal battle is on the cards.Of course, if the argument is correct about a renaissance in Scottish Football then major provincial clubs like Dunfermline Ath could realistically expect to win some silverware !
