BREAKING NEWS; SPFL Rule Change - Bonus Points For Corners.
Date: Saturday, 1st Apr 2023The SPFL has today confirmed to all 42 Member Clubs that, following a recent Extraordinary Board Meeting, they have introduced, for Season 2022-2023, with immediate effect, a ruling which will see the side with the most corner-kicks at the end of a league match gain a “bonus point”, no matter the score-line. All "bonus points" have been backdated to the start of the campaign.
The prime reason for this is to try and have teams attacking more frequently and to make matches more entertaining for supporters. Having shots at goal and getting an extra point for the most corners will produce :massive benefits` to the Scottish game, says SPFL Chief Executive, Neil Doncaster.
However, this may not be good news for Dunfermline Athletic as it immediately hands Falkirk an advantage. The Bairns have gained an extra 20 points through the new “bonus points” system, while the Pars have only gained 5 “bonus points”.
This means Dunfermline Athletic now sit on 71 points, while John McGlynn`s men have leapfrogged their arch rivals into top spot, with 75 points. The fight for the title has taken a new twist and a new turn as we enter the final month of the season. This now provides Falkirk with an optimum opportunity to win League One, with John McGlynn talking-up his teams ratio of corners in comparison to their opponents throughout the term.
James McPake is said to be seething with this new “bonus point” system coming into play immediately but is adamant that Dunfermline still have the upper hand in the race to become Champions, due to their superior results against Falkirk this season, ahead of their fourth and final clash next weekend.
It is believed McGlynn has said to have flapped his arms and say “naebudy`s deed!” when quizzed on the morality of his side potentially now winning the league through the corner-kick “bonus point” system.
