Running a marathon is quite an achievement, but this is off the scale. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

It`s a herculean effort right enough to run that distance in that time scale or on any time scale really. When you hear about these sort of challenges though I do wonder if it is motivated by the charity or if it`s more just because the people doing it want to do it for themselves.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

I can`t imagine you`d even set off if your heart wasn`t really in it, no matter how deserving the charity is. There will always be people wanting to challenge themselves to achieve something really difficult, but this is wild.

Had a strange coincidence there. Just sat down to breakfast, TV on STV, James Martin`s Saturday Kitchen, which had just gone to a break. I opened my phone, opened this thread, and Parsboiled`s post was the first one I read, at exactly the same time as Johnny Cash sang those exact words on a Trail finders advert.

"I`ve been everywhere, man".

It was the exact split second moment I was reading it in my head, he sang the words. Mind blowing

Minor point.

Going through cancer, must be pretty high up there. The mental anguish of diagnosis. The physical harm that`s done to you and the pain in knowing that it will probably come back and get you.

Adjectives like "amazing" and "astounding" don`t begin to do his achievement justice. It`s scarcely believable that any sane human being would voluntarily put himself through such torture. Running a single marathon in a temperate climate is tough enough, doing that in searing heat, day after day, is just wow!

I wonder if we`ll see a documentary about it?

I`m good mate, thank you. I never use the R word. I`m still here, that`s how I prefer to say it ๐Ÿ˜Š Don`t ever want to tempt fate, by saying I`ve beaten it. It`s a relentless beast.

I finished my treatment, the drug Pembrolizumab, December 2015. Since then I have received no more medication. The drug has done it`s job and continues to do so. The only follow up I get now, is the occasional phone call, to see how things are. After treatment finished, it was a pretty intense follow up procedure. Lots of scans and appointments, But I know where they are if things go wrong again, they`re a wonderful bunch at the WGH.

I`m just trying to get on with things and put it to the back of my mind. So far, so good ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thanks for the wishes GG, means a lot mate ๐Ÿ‘

Most of us go through life without a care in the world, rarely stopping to think about those less fortunate than ourselves. Unsung heroes like Big T and Ipswich just get on with the **** hand life has dealt them and rarely complain.

It`s humbling and heartwarming to hear that two fellow Pars fans are winning their own personal battles, which they have faced with courage and dignity. George Galloway`s famous tribute to Saddam Hussain is perhaps more appropriately directed to Ipswich, Big T and any other Pars fans who have had to fight cancer.

I salute your indefatigability. ๐Ÿ’ช

Thanks GG.

Indefatigability is a great word for this situation. It takes real balls to get through stuff like this as many people will have experienced. A lot of it is down to luck but you need to maintain mental strength too.

I was lucky that mine ended up not being cancerous, but I had a couple of months thinking it likely was.

Still took 10 weeks in hospital without any visitors (during covid), 4 operations (which subsequently turned into 6) and some other significant health issues (which *hopefully* have been resolved). Peeing in a bag for weeks, consistency poor sleep, lots of medicine and radiotherapy for about 5 months and being chained to a hospital bed at times.

I had a brain tumour and will be under annual checks to monitor for the next 7 years. I found it a massive challenge to come out of the first operation (16 hours) and not be able to remember what day it was on a day to day basis. That lasted for a few weeks and I wasn`t sure if I was ever going to get it back. Terrifying.

I literally got into a daily routine of "this might kill me, but not today". Not a great place to be, but good lord do I have great mental strength now.

The medical staff were amazing, and I`ll never forget on a couple of my darkest days when I wouldn`t order food that Sal the lady doing the rounds refused to leave me until I ordered some food. Shocking that they`re being treated so poorly by the government just now after years of pitiful pay rises.

I was fortunate to spend a little bit of time with Paul Mariner unfortunately. What an amazing man, consistently happy to try and make others feel better.

Ipswich and Big T, you guys deserve some kind of medal for the courage you have shown under the most trying and terrifying circumstances.

My own health scare experience, isn`t even a pale shadow of what you guys have been through. I presented with angina symptoms in 2009. After a number of medical tests at the beginning of 2010, I was informed that the tests suggested I had a rare condition called pulmonary hypertension (PH).

Of course, I`d never heard of it, so I consulted Dr Google. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ I was crapping myself when I read that PH leads to enlargement of the heart (hypertrophy) followed by a heart attack. The prognosis is 2.5 - 3 years. I decided to keep this information from my family to save them any unnecessary anxiety, although I did discuss it with a few close colleagues. A year later, my cardiologist, Dr Mark Francis, one of the best in Scotland, decided I should attend the Golden Jubilee in Clydebank, which is the major heart and lung hospital in Scotland. A four day stay, involving 14 different medical examinations, concluded that I didn`t have PH after all. Only then did I tell my wife and kids that I`d been living under a cloud for a whole year.

I`m still here, so I obviously didn`t have PH, but my angina has been getting more severe of late, making it too painful to continue my running, so I`m going back to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary next week to repeat the angiogram I had in 2010 to see if I need a stent(s). It`s not the end of the world if I do. I believe people with stents have run marathons, so I should be able to get out for a wee plod now and again. ๐Ÿ™‚

Great you`re getting in for the checks next week GG. The technology and expertise is so good these days in terms of spotting anything that needs to be spotted and treated.

Hopefully you`ll be back out and plodding before you know it.

This place is definitely brighter for your contribution.

Cheers, guys. I`m quite relaxed, but just want to get it done and dusted. Good thing nowadays is that, if you need a stent, it gets done there and then, whereas they used to get you back at a later date.

It would be good to get back to pain free running - I mean plodding - otherwise I`ll just hang up the old ASICS. I started running in 1985 and chucked the fags at the same time - best health related decision I`ve ever made. I`m the only one of a dozen colleagues who ran half an hour at lunchtimes who`s still active. ๐Ÿ™‚
