An interesting appointment, I am sure he will enjoy his time here even if the football doesn`t go as planned. Rapid are well backed financially so he should have one of the biggest budgets in the league and the squad is decent by Romanian standards. He`ll be expected to challenge for the title though, something Rapid have not been close to doing since about 2010. As long as Rapid are in the top 6 (there`s a ridiculous split as well here, but earlier and with all the teams points halved) he`ll probably be kept on and get a full season at it. Rapid also had their stadium rebuilt for Euro 2020, and it`s one the best purpose built stadiums in the country with the stands close to the pitch, it`s pretty much full each game as well. Hopefully he does a good job as Rapid is my favourite of the 3 big sides in the capital.

He`ll probably quite enjoy his football being away from the baggage that goes with being Neil Lennon in UK football...

It is not in the best of shape that`s for sure, and its trending downwards. It is hard to accurately compare, but the top division `Superliga` (betting firm sponsored/inspired) is probably pretty similar to the Scottish Premiership. The gruesome twosome being stronger than anything over here, FCSB (Steaua Bucharest) probably a bit stronger than Hearts. There is a real drop off though after the top league, the Scottish lower leagues are much stronger. Not too many players have played in both competitions, Ianis Hagi the most recent example. Gregory Tade is a memorable case though, he was the top scorer here in 14-15 with CFR Cluj, it`s a decade on, but it is something to go on! Maybe I should offer Paul Allan to a few clubs here!

Whatever happened to the village team which beat Therangers 4-1 in Govan round about 10 years ago, Bucuresti?

Wiki can answer GG`s question:

"In the summer of 2011, owner Dumitru Bucșaru did not file for a licence for the club to play in the Liga I and decided not to enroll the team in any championship. Unirea Urziceni was subsequently dissolved."

What`s strange a bit is the revival of Romania on the international scene. Scooshed their group well ahead of the Swiss, who`ve been serial qualifiers and have some of the highest positive stats from qualifying.

The national team have done better recently, although the qualifying group was kind and they benefitted from stealing an undeserved draw in Switzerland with 2 late goals and they were also fortunate to get a point at home against Israel. Later on the events in Israel also meant the decisive away game for Romania was played in Hungary (in fairness, they played well in that one and deserved the win).

Unirea Urziceni were a team from a village that`s about 70km from Bucharest. A wealthy businessmen bought them, they managed to win the league and of course that hilarious win at Ibrox, he got bored/ran out of money/ended up in jail and they almost immediately died. Quite a few examples of similar clubs sadly, Astra Guirgui also had some success (for longer, about a decade), winning the league and doing ok in Europe - they beat West Ham a couple of times.

Essentially, after communism, the move from state owned to private teams didn`t go well, lots of dodgy businessmen got their hands on them, and it hasn`t gone well. Every team suffered, including the big 3 in the capital (Steaua, Dinamo and Rapid).

Generally the league and national team have been getting worse. There are a few positive examples, the qualification is clearly a big boost. Gheorghe Hagi continues to work miracles with his club Farul Constanta, they have a great academy which produces most of Romania`s best players (Ianis Hagi etc), they have even managed to win the league a couple of times, but they very quickly sell on assets to the bigger teams here or elsewhere in Europe. In the last 5 years some better stadiums have been built, and there are signs of more sustainable investment, so hopefully things will pick up again - there is huge interest in the game here and a lot of untapped potential.
