Pars Opponents Meet in CL Tonight

The game that caught my eye kicks off at 5.45 tonieght.

Slovan Bratislava v Dinamo Zagreb

Pars fans of a certain vintage will know we narrowly lost out to both these sides in the late 60s. I think we were the first Scottish side to go out of Europe on away goals v Dinamo. The first leg at EEP was a cracking game. We came back from 1-2 to win 4-2 but lost 2-0 in Zagreb. Dinamo went on to lift the Fairs Cup (forerunner of UEFA Cup and Europa League) beating Don Revie`s outstanding Leeds team in the final.

Slovan nicked a last-minute equaliser at EEP when the Pars were going gung ho for a second goal.in the 68/69 ECWC semi-final first leg. In Bratislava, the Slovaks edged through with a single goal, going through to the final on a 2-1 aggregate. They went on to lift the trophy, beating Barcelona 3-2.
.
Ti think I`ll watch this game for old time`s sake. Nostalgia ain`t what it used to be.

The game in Zagreb was where Roy Barry wanted to have a "interview" with the referee after the match -to "discuss" an offside call not made leading to one of their goals.

Fortuntely teammates managed to keep him away.

The first leg was one of the best European ties played at EEP - they turned on the physical stuff when the Pars got it back to 2-2 - I mind very late in the game their big hulking central defender gesturing to the crowd behind the home end goal with a two finger salute, thinking the scoring would end in the draw.

Sir Fergie banged in a couple in quick succession just before the final whistle - so the fans were able to return the two fingers salute en masse !!!

Now you`ve got me thinking - Pat Gardner wasn`t at the club when we played Dynamo Zagreb, Farm brought him from Kirkcaldy to replace Sir Fergie.

PG`s dubious claim to fame in Europe was getting sent off in Bratislava.

Just out of interest, NMCmassive ... how did your father in law get to Bratisllava and does he recall how many fans made the trip?

Well "remembered" - PD was a more than decent player who could fill different positions, and I was surprised he didn`t stay longer at EEP - there`s probably a story there, another whom George Farm didn`t fancy perhaps ?

His father was Jimmy Delaney who won cup medals in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland - a longstanding record, which may still be extant ?

His nephew John Kennedy, now assistant boss at Celtic, was a very promising defender until crippled by a very nasty tackle on his Scotland debut.

My father in law was Slovak - he passed a couple of years ago.

I did ask him about the travelling support but he said there wasn’t many. Usually only people with close connections to the away clubs would get to the games.

I don’t know how much apart it would have played but it was still the USSR. I know Czechoslovakia was more open compared to other nations in the USSR until the invasion but I don’t really know how open it was pre-invasion.

Funny when I first met him and he asked who I supported I replied with “you’ll probably not know them…” but no he did. He said Dunfermline were a good team.

He didn’t speak a word of English btw. My wife and brother in law done all the translating

I wonder how many Pars fans made the trip to Bratislava? I knew Michael Reilly who owned the Bella Palma Restaurant in Pittencrieff St (now an Indian restaurant.) He went overland with 3 friends in a Zodiac - remember them? I think it took them 4 days to get there. Not sure, long time ago. One of the others was called "Hammy" - Hamilton? I think he had a garage, selling new and used cars.

I travelled by train from Budapest to Prague just after the iron curtain came down. Standing out like a sore thumb, the guard gestured for me to give him money in Bratislava station. Concerned if I didn’t and knowing the consequences, I handed over money. The guard left and came back on the train towards me then handed me the change and a nice big lunch, which we shared. This was the kindest of gestures as in those days the trains weren’t fast like now. One of many happy memories of people around the globe I have been lucky enough to meet.

I can genuinely say that some of the most generous and kind people I’ve met are from Eastern Europe.

They are quite well known as being stern faced but if you’re in need of help, they’ll go out of their way. That part of Europe has changed massively since I started going. Actually miss the old Slovakia a little

On that Slovan Bratislava away game, I vaguely remember the BBC or ITV playing the last half-hour of the match live on TV after the national news. Do you know if my memory is correct? I recall that the play was very pedestrian by that stage, and we could not break down their defence. We flickered out of the Cup Winners Cup like a burnt-out candle.

Correct Oz - I mind coming back from school and switching on the telly to watch much of the second half - if memory serves the television people only got late permission to show it.

In those days the SFA banned live transmissions if there was ANY senior football in Scotland - so, for example, if Alloa were playing Stenhousemuir in the Stirlingshire Cup there would be no telly coverage.

The game in Bratislava was an afternoon kick off - so STV (?) did manage to get to broadcast in monochrome, no colour in that era. I don`t think they had commentators over there - just did it from Glasgow studio.

It was a dismal affair, especially after the sending off.
