What`s your worst ever away day
Topic Originator: Ronaldo
Date:   Sun 24 Nov 19:14

I know, I know ... I shouldn`t have gone in the first place, but here’s a snapshot of my away day at Ayr …

first train cancelled … next one just misses Glasgow connection ... train in front breaks down ... tree falls on the line ... trudge through Glasgow in ankle deep slush … daughter drives us to Ayr ... near collision on M77 …

outside Ayr, car sounds ropey .... go to a garage ... ‘we’ll take a look, but be back before 5’ ... walk into town in the rain ... hail taxi for Somerset ... arrange 4.35 pick-up ... say goodbye to driver ... hear KO’s being delayed ...

Call garage ... they’ve cracked it … get taxi back across town … drive back to Somerset … match kicks off … poor game (not just us) … half-time … feet still freezing … second half also poor … at least we’re not losing … Ayr score.

Strange to say, I’ve had worse ‘match day experiences’, so my question is …

What’s your worst-ever away day?

Perth and close Hearts away with the Calderwood 2-4-4 from the start. Even I was laughing when the team set out…good night in Edinburgh though.

Mon the Pars!

Partick away in the admin years, 2nd last game of the season, Partick already won the league and it was flag day, we played a team of 18 year olds. sure we just needed a couple points to avoid the play offs.

Somehow went 3-1 up then Hrivnak and Millen done their thing. Up there with the lowest I`ve felt as a pars fan

That game wasn’t helped by Willie Collum playing till Partick scored either

Cup Final 2007. Drove up from Harlow in Essex, terrible hotel in Glasgow then watching Burchill deliberately fluff his shot to miss an easy chance for the opening goal for us.Never forgive him for that.

Another vote for Perth when we were beaten by Hafnarfjorour…..if that wasn’t bad enough. I started dating a new girl at this point and was trying to impress her (now my wife) but got food poisoning from the St.Johnstone catering and spent the second half ill, got on the Supporters Bus and was as sick as a dog, everyone thought I was intoxicated or high….i was neither, never touched a drink that night and have never used drugs in my life…..got home and it was coming out of both ends and I just wanted to die!! The embarrassment of the football and the embarrassment of the food poisoning, nae gid!!

New years day 1983 . A six nil defeat away to Raith Rovers. One of the most inept displays ever. To make it worse attended a party at night where the majority there were fellow Pars fans. Not the best atmosphere.

A half chance that had to be taken quickly with a defender closing him down.

To suggest he deliberately missed is nonsense.

Agreed VEE - no chance he missed that on purpose. He scuffed it.

Like Doumbe scuffed their winner, but his scuff dribbled into the corner.

Purely for the weather conditions / journey/ cold bus etc. for me that had to be Threave Rovers away. The Pars Directors never got off their bus, they watched the game from over the wall. The TR people took my two daughters into the kitchen the whole game. I will never forget John Watson came to me in the q to get in and gave me tickets fir the game on the condition I kept the stubs for him.
The journey back was horrendous as there was no heating in the bus, me and my girls huddled into one seat to try to keep warm. It was freezing.

The latest European games were particularly woeful occasions, as were the 3 Celtic cup finals but the worst for me was when we were relegated up at Inverness. Such a long and miserable journey home. At least back then though, when I got home, life was different. It was a bleak day among many bleak football related days.

"1975 Scotland at Wembley, still see Kennedy waving at the ball going past him!"

At least he wasn`t still with the Pars by that time !!!

Made fans forget (temporarily) about Frank Haffey 1961 !!!

Incidentally, the BEST ever away day might have been the Tuesday night we won at Motherwell with a late goal (Ross Jack ?) to go top of the league - temporarily for 24 hours if memory serves.

"Meadowbank, McAlpine in goal 0-4."

Norrie was missing and the defence granted Darren Jackson the Freedom of Edinburgh for 90 minutes - a painful memory.

Hamish`s one and only appearance for the Pars.

There was little or no domestic football in the winter of 1963 - that was when the Pools Panel came along.

The Valencia game was an exception, however in reality that should never have gone ahead.

Worst ever was losing 6-0 to the Rovers. Jim Moffat had an absolute howler in goals.

Best away?
Well there were a few but none better than our first away victory at Celtic Park since the 60’s during the Leishman era
A goal up and backs to the wall, Ross Jack raced away near the end to seal a famous 2-0 win.

Honorable mention to a 3-3 away draw at Tyncastle when we were 3-1 down and a man down after Terry Wilson was sent off.

Perth was awful. But…

Must’ve been around 1978, we played Hibs away on a freezing January Saturday.

I missed my mates at the Belleville, arrived late due to weather and they’d already set off. (No mobile phones). Drove to Easter Road, could only get parked miles away, and decided to go the main stand as it was so Baltic. Got in maybe 10 mins late, I could see my pals on the terracing, lighting programmes in an effort to keep warm. The game was dire, with players slipping all over the place and neither team understandably prepared to have a go.

Half time queue for a pie - they ran out just before I got served. “Any hot food?”

“Naw”

“What you got left?”

“Wagonwheels”.

“Hot tea or bovril?”

“”Finished”

I ended up with a Wagonwheel and a freezing can of coke.

The 2nd half was worse than the first, nothing continued to happen, except it got dark and even colder. At least we got a point. Made my way back to defrost my car, heater onto full blast, and I was on the Forth Road Bridge before Sportsound(?) on BBC radio announced

“And a 1st minute goal from Jimmy O’Rourke gave Hibs a 1-0 victory over the Pars in a cold and dismal game”.

Hated Hibs and Easter Road ever since.

Not my story....my dad`s

Him and grandad made their way to Ochilview for a game. Got there just in time for kick off (they thought) and paid full price to get in. Only once in did they notice the players troop off for half time. The turnstile guy didn`t even tell them the game had actually kicked off at 2pm. To top it off there was only 1 pie left by the time they got to the head of the queue.

Half a game and half a pie each.

Also had about dumped Perth and that European game out of my head need a therapist after reading these posts and thinking of all them defeats over the years and what was worse🤣🤣🤣
Threave rovers was actually started a decent day out and the snow appeared.. at least we won🥶

One I definitely tried to forget was Airdrie last game at Broomfield end of season 1994….though we did make up for it in 1996

Worst ever away day? Too many to mention. Pars have never been the best travellers.

One does stand out though - but not for the football. We played Gretna when they were in their pomp benefitting from Brooks Mileson`s investment. It was a midweek game in the League Cup. Google tells me it was on 23/08/05. As it was a ground I`d never visited I decided to make the trip. The match was played in torrential rain and we were under the cosh for most of it but managed to sneak a 1-0 win. I think Mark Burchill scored the goal but haven`t been able to confirm this.

On the homeward journey, after thundering up the A74(M) still in torrential rain, it wasn`t until I left it at Abington that I smelled burning rubber and stopped to find that my front off-side tyre was shredded right down to the hub! I didn`t trust myself to change the tyre and was worried about damage to the hub so phoned the AA. After quite a wait the AA guy arrived and did the needful but it was still over an hour`s drive home to Edinburgh so I didn`t get in until the wee sma` hours.

Worst and oddly one of the best.

It was away to Morton and the Morton fans were boycotting the match in protest at the owner.

I missed my train and arrived late and ended up watching the first half from up a tree next to the home terracing behind the goal, which was not a great experience.

Anyway, I got bored and wandered around the outside of the ground. I found a portacabin next to the wall behind the away terracing, so I climbed on top of it, shinned up a drainpipe and then watched the second half in the away end for free.

I felt like I had denied the club any funds, in solidarity with the protest.

I can`t actually remember the result. I think we may have drawn or snatched a late winner.

That report was a great read, Neil, and certainly confirmed my recollection of the one-sided nature of the game. It also reminds us of the quality of player Gretna were able to attract then. Thanks for finding and posting it.

There has been lot but travelling all the way to stranraer in the 70’s, which was a 4 hour trudge in those days, got pumped 3-0 to go bottom of the 4th division so travelled back with the knowledge we were at least for a few days the worst team in Scotland.

I was considering this one, though I think it would have been 1980/81 (the season George Best played for them at East End). We were in the second division in `78 and didn`t play them in the league.

I don`t remember the cold, for me it was not really knowing where Easter Road was and, from the map, thinking the Regents Terrace way was the best way. I saw floodlights in the distance and headed there, it was only on hearing an early roar of to my left that I realised I was heading towards Meadowbank. I did get in for nearly nothing though, two young guys, but older than me, said to go to the ticket window and ask for tickets for someone. They gave me some money and everyone was happy. Except maybe the guy whose name was on the envelope. Hope it wasn`t you SP.

That`s all incidental. What might have made it the worst was getting chased down Princes St by their fans and getting my new LP broken by a Hibs kick.

Then I remembered a trip to Kilmarnock in the early 90s where we spun off the slip road just after the Kincardine Bridge. Pars won but I saw none of it.
