 Bring back hanging! 😡
Topic Originator: GG Riva
Date:   Thu 26 Dec 06:20

The League Cup final highlights on Sportscene on Sunday, December 15th, were dominated by arguments over a possible penalty not awarded to Rangers, either by the referee or the VAR officials. Last Saturday afternoon, on Radio Scotland, the pundits almost completely ignored the live games up and down the country, other than to announce any goals scored and argued incessantly about that penalty claim from the previous weekend. I thought we might have heard the end of it after that. Not a bit of it.......

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c05p0erey1ro

What on earth are Rangers trying to achieve by dragging this out? The game isn`t going to be replayed, nor is Celtic going to be asked to hand the trophy over to the moral winners of that final. The VAR officials were not used last weekend, presumably as a punishment for their error, which will have entailed a significant loss of earnings, but Rangers are unhappy that they have now been reinstated. Perhaps the SFA should set up stocks in George Square so that irate Rangers fans can pelt them with soft fruit or the odd brick? 🤔

When you have the head of the referees saying it was unacceptable that the penalty wasn`t awarded then I do wonder if being removed from duties for one weekend is sufficient time for these officials to learn the rules of the game. I mean this was a factual decision to be made not a subjective one. The onfield call was that it was a foul and var only had to confirm that if it had or hadn`t taken place in the box. The var officials couldn`t manage that and so Willie Collum is absolutely correct in describing it as unacceptable. So far all I have heard from Rangers , both officially and fans, is that this was the result of incompetence. Had it been against Celtic then I guarantee that certainly from their fans it would be put down as conspiracy and corruption.
Refereeing decisions will always be controversial as they are often subjective and the onfield ref only gets one chance to make it and from only one angle. Factual decisions which are black or white made by var when the decision makers have all the time they need to come to the correct and right outcome should never be wrong.
As you allude to GG these are paid officials, they aren`t running the line down at the park for the local pub team match for the love of the game. In any other profession I`m hazarding a guess that displaying that level of rank incompetence wouldn`t be tolerated.

And although my eyes were open

Yes, I recall a similar outcry when someone handballed in 2004. It was never out the news and the head referee came down on their knees begging forgiveness. Oh, no, that never happened. Why? Because it was just a provincial team.

This should have been a simple "put up and shut up" but because it`s one of the bigot bros we`ll get the authorities apologising like the weak little men they are. How many other countries pander so much to the bigger teams? Pathetic.

I’m confused or just a diddy …if the initial grab if the opponent’s strip is outside the box the foul occurred outside the box and it’s a free kick?

Jake, in every league in every country when an official makes a monumental error then they are often demoted or removed from officiating for a time. Also many a club will complain about officials and the decisions they make. Here is one from Liverpool last season when var failed to do it`s job properly and a perfectly good goal wasn`t allowed to stand.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66978938

I get it, it`s Rangers and almost all of us dislike them as a club but defending incompetent officiating when they now have all the tools to get it right, nah not for me.

I`m not defending the incompetence of the VAR officials in any way, but the bleating from Ibrox is rather pathetic, and this claim is quite sinister;

"We also note one of the officials has been appointed to an SPFL Premiership match involving the club that benefited from the error."

And Celtic are the club who have always been accused of paranoia......

I never noticed that GG and that sort of statement I can`t support. Yes Rangers were probably denied a cup final victory over Celtic because of officiating but it was incompetence not corruption.

I`d argue they should have scored the 4v1 at 1-0 up which was equally as significant but because that was horrendously poor from them on the park its never been mentioned!

Can`t help but feel a little bit of satisfaction every time a decision goes against the Old Firm given the numerous times we have been the victim of a horrendous refereeing decision in games against that lot not that we have had that many games against them in recent years sadly!

So suspend the official and move on. Accept that EVERY club has decisions go against them now and again. As much as I enjoy seeing Rangers fans foaming at the mouth, it`s getting pathetic now. The poor little lambs are getting desperate.

That`s the thing. Complaining about 1 decision only masks the fact that their strikers are rank and repeatedly missed golden chances to seal the win. For Igmene read Dessers or Lammers or Moreles.

Indeed.

A few weeks ago Clement was moaning about VAR where he observed his player was ruled offside "by a toenail" decision to deny a goal.

Next time Rangers benefit from a close call can we expect he`ll gripe about it going his way to balance the debate ?

The same goes for the green half of the great divide of course.

Meanwhile - back in the real world..........................

You`re assuming that Rangers would have scored from the spot had the penalty been awarded, TOWK, but there`s no way of knowing how the game would have panned out and ironically, they lost on penalties.

You don`t need to be an Einstein or a Sherlock Holmes to realise why they`re putting pressure on the match officials. It`s exactly the same reason that players of top clubs protest to the ref at almost every decision that goes against them, and claim for every free kick, corner or throw in, even when it`s glaringly obvious that it`s the opposition`s.

It’s a foul isn’t it? Or does the grabber get a free grab for a set distance?

It’s a coping mechanism for whichever team is behind. They need an excuse for being 2nd best rather than admitting they aren’t as good as the other. They create a siege mentality claiming that everyone’s against them. They’ve both done it for decades. Remember Celtic lost the league one year because we lay down to Rangers in the final game. Celtic missed a penalty in their game that would have clinched it but rather than blaming themselves we took the blame. They also had a go at the Kille keeper, an ex Celt, for trying too hard. “Always cheated, never defeated” is a label both of them can claim.

"I try to respect decisions and give the benefit of the doubt. But I think when I see that level of incompetence, which is the only word I can use, then that makes me worry for the game.
In such a tight title race that can make the difference. I also think that VAR is not the problem here. That’s clear. It’s competence.
I think the first one is a great example of the game being refereed outside of the pitch. The referee made the decision and someone outside made another decision to say it was a sending off. That’s the game being refereed outside of the field and in big games that costs you."

That was Brendan Rodgers earlier in the year after Celtic had been beaten by Hearts. GG if your theory, which is likely correct, that such complaints are done to put pressure on officials then that last sentence by Rodgers is telling. Did that put pressure in a big game on the var officials to get a factual call wrong to Celtic`s benefit? Is that what happened in the final?
I still just think it`s incompetence rather than willful corruption or weak character. Now, and I can`t stress this enough, I`m not defending Rangers complaining and whining. Then getting beat , like when it`s Celtic`s turn, brings me great joy at work bantering with my old firm supporting colleagues. What I`m annoyed with is var getting a factual decision wrong. They looked at the footage and couldn`t get a yes no answer correct. That is just baffling incompetence.

Rodgers was definitely laying down a marker, telling officials he would call them out in the future, whenever they made a poor decision at the expense of Celtic. He questioned their competence, which is acceptable. Rangers have taken this to an unacceptable level by questioning the VAR officials` integrity. There`s even the suggestion that one of them is likely to repeat this bias as he`s officiating at another game involving Celtic this weekend.

That`s a very serious and spurious allegation,

The ugly sisters of Scottish football… they’re as bad as each other. On this occasion it’s Rangers who think they need to be seen to be doing something by their fans - last time it was Celtic 🤷🏻‍♂️

Given previous wins against the SFA. Their name with titles and marketing wins are two I know of. There could be more. Are they the only club to dispute and win or the only club to dispute?
In my opinion it is rather distasteful as people make mistakes. What is their solution? To allow the software full authority?
Someone needs to pose that question back to The Rangers what they propose as a future solution to avoid the event in the future and to discuss in the proper channels rather than gutter press attacks on individuals.

Doesn`t the referee have discretion to play advantage in these circumstances ?

It would be interesting to hear the verdict from an experienced official.

the issue is there are not enough good enough quality officials at the top end of the game.

It`s certainly a storyline that Clement likes to control the narrative to "hide" his failures (0 wins in 6 derbys). Penalty in cup final, disallowed goal in the scottish cup final for a push on the keeper, no handball penalty given against Alistair Johnson in his first(?) derby when striker was deemed offside in attacking phase of play. Amazing coming from a club that recently went 74 matches without conceding a spot kick.
