Here’s my wee prediction…
442 will come back - sort of…
It’ll be like a 4411 without the ball… 244 with the ball.
High presses and possession football will become the old way. Low blocks (I hate that saying btw. It’s really just a fancy way to say defending deep 🤷🏻♂️) and being direct, getting from front to back quickly (long balls 😂) will become popular.
Hopefully see a resurgence of fast wingers and a bit more entertainment.
This tiki taka p15h is boring

Most of the top teams in Europe are already pressing high in a 442 then drop off if they dont win the ball.
I do a lot of coaching where I live and have had loads of success this last 18 months playing a 442 Diamond. The other teams centre defenders always shout to the coach within 5-10 mins - "what should we do, they have 2 strikers"
Id love to see an attacking version of 442 back with 2 proper old school wingers just attacking the full backs at every opportunity

Tidser is not for turning.
Personally I think he`s going to relegate us by sticking with a strategy that doesn`t work for our attack. Not scoring goals results in not winning enough football matches. Absolutely hope I`m wrong and he proves people like me wrong.
I`ve given up feeling frustrated about it. If he relegates us then it`s down to him. He has been given enough time to save us. I think the squad we have are good enough to stay up, not great but good enough, as John McLaughlin was beginnning to show. We played in a style that suited our players and they were enjoying it. I don`t think our players are enjoying Tidser`s game. Too many not comfortable.
If we have to re-build in League 1 and start yet another new era there then so be it. Just not getting down about it anymore. Nothing we can do about a stubborn manager.

The original formation was supposed to be 2-3-5, but I guess the was very flexible. The two inside forwards were more like link men between the midfield and the front three. Also the centre half was really a centre back. I think it was Jock Stein who introduced the overlapping full back. My preferred formation was always 4-3-3 but 4-4-2 would be my preference now. Good strikers should hunt in pairs and feed off each other, like Sutton and Shearer or Brewster and Crawford. But you require to have two good strikers or a main striker and a creative forward partner.

Georgia and Slovakia both had quite a bit of success at the Euros last year playing 4-4-2. Not even fancied nations. Wish we could find a way of accomodating two strikers.

In fact the best example of a good working front two partnership I`ve witnessed this season was the McCann/Kane combination that destroyed Partick Thistle 4-1 at Firhill. Flash in the pan perhaps, but if they had been able to replicate that regularly, we`d be at the top of this league but sadly Kane is injury prone and McCann blows hot and cold.

I actually don’t have a preferred formation other than the one that works against the team you’re playing against.
For example no point in playing a flat 4 midfield against Grangemouth, you’ll be crowded out in the middle of the park but against Morton, changing to a flat 4 and playing with width opened them right up 🤷🏻♂️

Of course formations are immaterial if players don`t win their individual battles.

Recruitment is king. We’ve recruited terribly the last 2 summers.
