That is a sore one. They’ll be lucky to survive the next few years.

The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has today confirmed the imposition of a 15-point deduction for Edinburgh City, as per SPFL rules on clubs suffering an insolvency event.
This deduction follows a provisional liquidator being appointed in respect of the club on July 22 this year in relation to an unpaid debt due by the club.
Similar to administration, the provisional appointment of a liquidator is an insolvency event under SPFL Rules.
The William Hill League 2 table has been updated accordingly.

For some time, City have had planning permission for a 1,500 seat stand along the far side side of the pitch, but it`s been held up by the Council and property developers who have permission to build 400+ student accommodation flats on adjacent land, including the site of the former velodrome. The Club`s former owner left them and, unlike the situation at Kelty Hearts, left nothing in the kitty. The new owners recruited a good young manager, who in turn recruited a some exciting young players, eg Connor Young, who are still developing. They previously suffered a similar points deduction penalty a couple of seasons ago and, in a nutshell, they have been sh*t on from a great height by the former owner, property developers and Edinburgh Council. This is a decent, friendly little football club who, through no fault of their own, are now in danger of dropping out of the league or worse, and I for one would be sorry to see them go.

Don`t know much about the background to this but if it is as CitizenPar lays it out then the previous owner & Edinburgh council should hang their collective heads in absolute shame
The SPFL might not have had any option under current rules to divi up any other punishment, but they make the rules so they need to change them where necessary
I guess we will get the full story at some point, likely when it’s all to late for Edinburgh City

CitizenPar,
When Kelty`s previous owner moved onto Raith, it was claimed that they were debt free and had money in the bank going forward. Not entirely true.
Granted there was no outstanding debts, there were however significant upcoming outgoings in the short time which the bank balance could not and did not cover. These "debts" come as a shock to the new ownership whom didn`t know a thing about them. They were carefully managed and addressed though - impacting on the playing budget considerably at the time.

I’m not sure the council or previous owner have anything to do with this latest issue. Looks like they had a falling out with a supplier, refused to pay, the supplier then went to sheriff court to get a liquidator appointed to recoup what they were owed. Liquidator came in, took the money out and everything was settled very quickly.
However, because a liquidator had to be appointed, they breached SPFL rules and have to be penalised.

I actually had a long conversation with City`s current and former chairman just a few days ago and they were very optimistic about the club moving forward. The Kelty situation was brought up, but only to compare former owners and the financial difficulties left behind. I got the impression they also believed Kelty had been left in a sound financial situation, unlike City. There was certainly no indication whatsoever that they believed Edinburgh City FC had a big unpaid financial debt and I suspect this has come as just as big a shock to the current owners and board as it has to the supporters.
ICT and Dumbarton look as though they`ll survive, but Hamilton Accies` future still looks precarious. Whether Edinburgh City can survive is another story, but if so, it looks like a return to the Lowland League could be unavoidable.

I don`t doubt for a second that the common thought or narrative portrayed in these situations is one of "we`ve left you in a great position going forward to build on". Whereas 9 times out 10 the reality couldn`t be further from the truth. Usually it`s kept behind closed doors and in many cases there are further legal proceedings etc.
One could argue that proper due diligence would avoid a scenario like this unfolding but it`s never that simple - I`m not a business man myself and have no knowledge of how this things unfold.
It`s not looking great for Edinburgh City but you never know, with a little bit of local assistance and some luck they may just make it out of the fire.

Good luck getting the council to worry about it. Edinburgh City Council are an absolute disgrace these days. Just take a look at the road network in the city.

Feel sorry up to a point, but it`s becoming a farce of a club.
Non payment of wages, last seasons licencing fiasco, change of name, then change it back...
This seems a harsh penalty as far as I can read it (the debt was more incompetence) but maybe the authorities are pig sick of them
As for Edinburgh council, it`s a dogs breakfast of a facility, but it`s not their responsibility to supply a stadium for football teams! It`s up to Edinburgh City FC (or whatever they are called now) to have their own stadium, and they don`t
