 Investing in Scottish football

The motives of those investing significant sums of money in Scottish football are often questioned with many suggesting it`s a surefire way of turning a large fortune into a small one but some of the deals being done during the transfer window maybe indicate there is some method behind the madness.

Hibs have just sold Lewis Miller, an Australian international they acquired on a free transfer a few years ago, to Blackburn Rovers for a fee which could amount to over £1m in due course. Aberdeen sold a striker, Papa Gueye, to a Turkish side, Kasimpasa, for a fee thought to be c£850k which would represent a profit of c£350k. James Penrice recently left Hearts for AEK Athens for a fee reckoned to be well over £1m, having joined them from Livi under freedom of contract.

These are just three transactions that caught my attention. I don`t know if data analysis featured in any of the transactions and we don`t know the overall net trading position of these clubs re player transfers but they do illustrate the potential for profit if the recruiting net is cast wide and they might explain the increased enthusiasm for investing in our clubs and appointing so many football/sporting directors.

There will be a solid business model that the owners are working to. I doubt it states "throwing money away in expensive signings and wages". Any model would have to be sustainable in the short term, I would have thought with the intent of leveraging the analytics to bring in players, develop them and sell them on at a profit to their and the owners benefit. It`s not all about analytics of course. That`s where NL and the management team come in to bring their experience and ability to motivate players and do the things analytics cant do. It`s a holistic approach using analytics as a tool and part, but not all, the whole solution.

I know its a level up but Celtic signed Khun 18months ago for £2.5million. Ropey 6 Months, outstanding 6months (domestically and europe) and a meh 6 months. Sell him to Como for £18mil almost £1mil a month "profit" on his time there. The model is there but needs a lot of things to fall into place and hard work scouting/analyising data player coaching etc to turn those "projects" into profits

We are obviously on a much smaller scale but Bord and Sofer probably think they can do something similar with players they can showcase in our first team.

Some of the bigger clubs almost seem to run a separate business, trading in players whom they invest in knowing full well they are unlikely to make their first-team but can probably be sold on for a handsome profit.
