BBC had a big celebration at weekend marking 50 years of broadcasting Sportscene.

Marking they event they brough back previous presenters (Dougie Donnelly) and commentators such as Archie MacPherson (now 88)

Hearing the voice and some of the phrases used by Jock Brown on the Livi vs f@lk!rk commentary i was immediatley transported back to 1995/1996 and the extended highlights BBC showed with his commentary of the utd (2-2 draw at EEP), utd at Tannadice (1-0 Petrie) and Airdrie on Trophy day on VHS that I wore out watching over and over.

show can be viewed on iplayer (https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m002h6vh/sportscene-premiership-highlights-202526-09082025)

I wonder how Rob McLean, who still does commentary, felt about being included in the 50th anniversary show!

Archie had a different, conversational style of commentary from what we tend to get now but he drew the short straw as far as the games covered were concerned.

It was a nice break from the likes of Jonathan Sutherland, Michael Stewart and Liam McLeod though.

Cheers for pointing this out, I`ll have a swatch at that tonight. I always really liked Jock Brown as a commentator, impartial, and knowledgeable. Him and Ian Crocker are probably my favourite in Scottish football

Many of these commentators have a wonderful way with words. My personal favourite is probably Roddy Forsyth, but back in the day I loved Jock Brown. One phrase that stuck with me was his description of some playmaker type, whose name I can’t remember, as having a “ roving commission”.

Was there not a "stramash" in the goalmouth, Arthur Montford?

Dougie Donnelly made the presenting look effortless and fair play particularly to Archie and Jock Brown who haven’t had a gig in many years.
They were professional and to be honest, did not look out of place in the modern game.

It was an act of sheer folly.

I liked Jock Brown, and it was a shame when he left Sportscene to join Celtic as GM. Once he left that job presumably the higher ups at BBC Scotland thought he was incapable of being impartial as I`m not sure if he worked there again - the BBC continued with a past it Archie MacPherson then Rob MacLean who was a much better presenter than commentator. I`m sure Brown did the odd game on Eurosport so he must have been doing the World Feed off-tube for a while.

The black bordered photos of Vipond and Irvine was quite funny.
