 8 Second Goalie Rule.
Topic Originator: GG Riva

I saw Martin Dubravka was punished for holding onto the ball for more than 8s, with a corner to Spurs on MOTD. Is this being trialled only in English football, or also elsewhere?

Totally unrelated, but Wayne Rooney as a pundit? It`s hard enough to make out what he`s saying half the time, and when I do, I wish I hadn`t made the effort. 🙄

It’s a rule change for this season. Keep an eye on the ref at goal kicks, he keeps his hand in the air and counts down from 5 on his fingers for the goalies to see. The ref was doing it during our game against Airdrie.

Yeah, I think especially early in the season referees will be looking out for it. I like the rule change to be honest, forces teams to get the ball back in play quicker. I`ve definitely counted times before where keepers have held the ball for well over 20-25 seconds without penalty

It’s done through grassroots as well.

Yes, it was noticeable at East Kilbride with it being a smaller venue and you could hear the ref (Sean Murdoch) doing the countdown.

The ref was constantly counting down at our game with Airdrie.

Yes, it is a positive change, although the rule did exist before with 6 seconds, except that it was never applied. There seems to be a stricter approach with time wasting in general which is good to see. I find it especially annoying when players are allowed to kick the ball away (even a little bit) after their team has conceded a free-kick.

A goal for Crystal Palace was disallowed by VAR at Chelsea this afternoon by the application of a little-known rule.

Referee Darren England made an announcement to the crowd to explain the decision. He said: "After review, away number six is less than one metre away from the wall as the shot is taken. Therefore, it`s an indirect free-kick and a disallowed goal."

The International Football Association Board`s Law 13 states that when three or more defending team players form a wall, all attacking players must remain at least one metre from the wall until the ball is in play. This rule was introduced to the laws of the game in 2019-20.

I coach a 2011 team and the ref was using it in our game last weekend.

bit of a worrying thread how much officials are berated by fans yet at the same time fans query whether "rules" are only being trialled in certain leagues or implementing "little known rules" which have been in place for over 5 years.

There were also changes this summer in Laws of the game around drop ball should the ball hit a match official.

Maybe the young team in the North West can count down with their new megaphone to increase the pressure when we need to get a goal! 😃

We got punished against Livingston for that. Not sure who the keeper was though. May have been Ruitenbeek.

The new rule has been implemented at all levels. Referee at my 13 year olds game advised them all before they kicked off. Seems a strange rule.

Hardly a "worrying thread," PuP. I was the only one asking, as I was on holiday last month and thought I`d missed out on this new "rule." Excuse my ignorance, but has it been brought in worldwide? At least I did know about the dropped ball if it hits the ref - I don`t think his assistants should be on the pitch when the ball is in play.

My other point about Wayne Rooney appears to be shared by at least one journalist;

I went to see Caledonian Braves play East Stirling last night. Braves were leading 1-0 when they appealed to the referee to penalise the East Stirling keeper for holding on to the ball for longer than 8 seconds. The referee allowed the game to continue. The Braves players refused to let it lie and continued to berate the referee for not knowing the new rule. As there were only about 100 people in the crowd, I could clearly hear the referee reply that he`d been instructed to only enforce the rule when the goalkeeper`s side were leading and were obviously trying to waste time.
