 Elusive striker

Nothing much has been said about our failure to sign another striker in the transfer window. The Courier reported -

`The East End Park outfit filed an application to the Scottish FA for ‘governing body endorsement’ to complete the signing of a marksman based in Italy. However, with a deal close, they were not given the green light`.

Does anyone know the rules about signing players from abroad and how they are applied? I think this is the first time I`ve heard of approval being withheld but maybe that`s because I haven`t been paying attention where other clubs have been involved.

It sounds like the SFA have done a bit of funny business here and not allowed us to make a signing…..if he passes work permit regulations then surely we are allowed to sign him?

the club tried to sign one last summer and it was rejected, Nadir Ciftci was rejected a couple of winter windows ago when Morton tried to sign him so it does happen and there will be others that just arent reported.

I wondered if the `government body approval` is used as supporting evidence in the work permit application.

Maybe someone at the SFA has been reading Pie and Bovril and thinks we are actually a human trafficking operation

Under UK immigration rules, administered by the Home Office, professional footballers have to be of a very high standard to obtain a visa to enter and play in the UK. That standard is, simplistically, based on the number of caps held and the number of games played in the home country`s senior league.

As players who meet those criteria would, by definition, be too expensive for a great many clubs outside the English top two leagues, an exception exists whereby the governing body (in our case, the SFA) can grant an exemption from passing that test - the Governing Body Exemption.

To obtain a GBE, a case has to be made to a panel formed for each application by the SFA. Generally, the player/club has to show that the player is of sufficient quality to be able to add something to the Scottish game and that it is difficult for the club to find a UK player who meets their requirements.

Successful applications are, of course, made public by the relevant club, whereas unsuccessful applications are never discussed.

As the ability to issue a GBE is something which the Home Office introduced at its discretion and which it could very easily remove, governing bodies will want to be able to show that they did not simply nod through every application that is made.

I recall (perhaps mistakenly) that St Johnstone failed several years ago to get a GBE for jason Scotland but that Dundee Utd`s later submission was successful.

Presumably it wasn`t an issue for players who are EU citizens until the UK left the EU?

Well no it wasn’t an issue. Anyone was free to come and go and work where they wanted within the full European membership.

Another Brexit bonus,.....I curse Boris, Oor Nigel, and the rest of them for the chaos they caused , I`m working in EU, and it`s been catastrophic for our UK citizens, none of who we are employing anymore. Brilliant.

posted in the transfer thread but ex player Scott Banks was forced to leave St Pauli as Brexit meant he could no longer play as an u23 player.

He joined blackpool on loan yesterday. Another team mate is in the same position not sure if he managed to get a move.

A good looking Italian striker could have bought in an extra 2-3000 female fans. The commercial avenues could have been boundless and financed a stadium extension.
