 Would clock stopping work?

Interesting read on BBC Sport today re the average amount of game time in football, and whether stopping the clock would cut out time wasting.

I don`t think so. Players would still feign injury to break the flow of the game, managers would still make subs to stop the game. I don`t think the lack of injury time is much of an issue anymore.

What I would clamp down on is stopping play for players with cramp, clearly non-serious injuries...just play on. It is now a trend to stop play for keepers who are injured, as referees pretty much have to, I`d play on. Stop the game for a serious injury, and any head knock. Players found to have feigned a head injury to be retrospectively banned (if there is video evidence).

That said, it is really up to the players/managers. If they are hell bent on destroying the flow of the game, they will always find a way, no matter how much you tweak the laws.

Serious question but when did it change? It used to be that refs would stop the game for head knocks only, non serious leg injuries etc, the player had to leave the field to get treatment or wait till play stopped. 90% of the time players are acting it to stop the game and we all know there’s feck all wrong with them.

It`s bad enough now where it doesn`t seem uncommon to see 8+ minutes injury time added on.

No blatant time wasting in the Women’s international at EEP a couple of weeks ago. Also, no player pinching yards at free kicks or throw ins.

These issues are clearly much worse in the men’s professional game than elsewhere.

Having had cramp many times in life, I can confirm that it’s one of the worst brief pains I’ve felt so if a player genuinely has it then definitely stop the game. But I know, it’s near impossible to know unless there’s a visible twitching in the area!

I think the goal is to play a 60 minute match (in play) as average right now is 59 minutes.
Clock stops each time ball is out of play.

Always thought if a player goes down injured, he should go off for a minimum of two minutes, that would cut a lot of time wasting out

So, if a player is fouled and injured as a result, he should be excluded from play for 2 + minutes.

The logic in that escapes me.

I don’t know about stopping the clock. That’s a much more complicated one but for what it’s worth I seen an ex English prem ref (name evades me) saying he’d suggest the ability to change a throw in to the other team. That way instead of someone killing time to the point they’ll take a booking then throw it in, he could just say - get on with it or I’ll give it to them. Thought that was a great idea

A couple of suggestions:

A goalie may not repeatedly feign to pick up the ball. They must pick up the ball.

At a throw-in, the player who picks up the ball must take the throw-in.

If a player gets treatment, they leave the park for 2 minutes. Wether thats from a foul or an innocuous injury. Do that and the fake injuries drop massively.

Make throw ins like goal kicks now - 10 seconds to get the ball in play or swaps sides.

Goalies - goal kick must be taken from same side ball goes out at and must be in within 8 seconds from when they place the ball.

Refs need to stop being so useless and actually start enforcing some of the laws of the game.

If a player is expected to leave the field of play for treatment due to foul play it should require one of the opposition to do so as well.

The problem is players are now holding their head when down “injured” whether it’s cramp or whatever and the ref has to stop the game.

If a player has the game stopped by holding his head and then gets treatment for cramp or such like then keep them off for 5 mins.

Also just stop the game for a genuine clash of heads.
