Maybe a bit early but the BBC has published the provisional pots from which countries will be drawn for the first round of next summerβs WC. Scotland is expected to be in Pot 3. Which 3 countries would be your ideal opponents and which would represent the traditional "Group of Death" for you? (Bear in mind that the 4 European playoff winners are expected to be placed in Pot 4.)

Canada, Iran and Curacao (though as my mum didn`t qualify this time they`ll be in England`s group).

On the basis of the FIFA rule - No more than two teams from Uefa will be in the same group.
All the UEFA teams are guaranteed to face another UEFA team, so trying to work out which one for us
1 of the POT 1 teams (Spain, France, England, Portugal, Holland, Belgium OR Germany)
1 of the POT 2 teams (Croatia, Switzerland or Austria)
OR
1 of the Playoff winners.
All pretty formidable but edging towards Belgium or Portugal from POT1

More concerned about where we are based. I`m sure many remember the heat of Mexico in 86.
Don`t mind Canada (Vancouver or Toronto) but the USA is surely where we want to be.
Atlanta
Boston
Dallas
Houston
Kansas City
Los Angeles
Miami
New York / New Jersey (East Rutherford)
Philadelphia
San Francisco Bay Area (Santa Clara)

I`ve read that FIFA has decreed none of the home nations will be placed in England`s group. Dunno if that is a positive or a negative. Scotland wouldn`t need a motivational talk but England have better players.
That didn`t help Denmark, mind you. π

We don`t want any teams we`re expected to beat, Parfect. I`m old enough to remember when Scotland last faced Iran in a WC tournament. π
Eta. Let's have the "Group of Death" as we did at Mexico 86, and have a good stab at qualifying and if we don't make it, there's no shame attached to it.

How does 48 teams in 12 groups of 4 translate to 32 teams for the first knockout games?

Eight best thirds presumably. It`s been done before, like when going from 24 to 16.
72 games to eliminate 16 teams.

Latest FIFA Men`s world rankings:
https://inside.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men
My provisional choices (current ranking in brackets):
Pot 1- Canada (27)
Pot 2 - Australia (26) or Austria (24)
Pot 3 is Scotland (36)
Pot 4 - New Zealand (86) or Kosovo (80)
Bear in mind that many very skilful teams are below us in the rankings, e.g. Greece (43).
I haven`t been able to take into account Bletchley Par`s point about venues (posted at 20 Nov 14:56.) Perhaps someone can do that.

Aye thatβs my dream group as well Canada are honking and only there because they are a host nation and New Zealand are equally as honking we should beat Australia as they will struggle with actually being the right way up for a change ππππ

I think physically moving their entire countries would be a nightmare logistically.

Read that its going to be all UEFA group winners being kept apart. So that would mean top seed in our group from Brazil, Argentina and the 3 hosts...
I guess probably increases the likelihood of having a play-off winner as only 2 Uefa teams per group.
So Argentina and Italy it is then
