Except its not……the same as all “bank holidays” where only people who work for the government will be entitled to it, and any other jobs will be covered by employers discretion.

That was my first thought as the Scottish Gov dont care about private sector other than to tax it

Not one of those on the `pilot scheme` of 4 day 32 hour weeks.

I guess it will be those with `the broadest of shoulders ` i.e. us .

Aye, tax payers from the private sector can fund it. It`s an SNP gimmick with the Scottish elections just before the world cup.

Don`t see the point tbh - it`s not like the game is Sun night / early Mon morning.

I work bank holidays, Christmas & New Year aside & deal with English banks so no danger my office will close.

It`s also my last working day before I fly to Boston, cause I had to keep my trip under 3 weeks without having to get authorisation from the big bosses, so again - no danger I`ll be off 🤔🤣🤣

Don`t see the point having the Bank Holiday at that time - much better waiting till after the final, get the boys back here with the trophy

Political gimmick. Nothing less. Might be different if Scotland were playing the night before but they’re not.

I know most will still be working but who the hell would turn down a paid bank holiday just to complain we don’t need one?

It`ll be interesting to see what "people who work for the government" encompasses.

Obviously not the emergency services for a start.

It`s not really a reward / celebration if "most will still be working" 🤔

After the Brazil game / we get knocked out, I can understand but it really is pointless what / when it`s being suggested. What happens if we do another Peru / Iran / Costa Rica?!! A day of mourning instead?!

A (n extra) day off after the Denmark game would have been extremely helpful tho 🤪🥳🤣

Don’t really get it. Games Saturday night/Sunday morning. More beneficial that it was the Thursday after the Wednesday 11pm game.

Why is it when things like that are announced folk complain about "the cost" but when we get bank holidays for Royal weddings, they are described as being "a boost for the economy"?

Bank Holidays are called that for a reason, the banks are on holiday. Just because you work for the government or indeed the banks themselves does not entitle you to a paid holiday. I doubt many employers will do anything other than sanction a unpaid day off for those who claim it. This initiative is a cheap stunt by the SNP to curry favour with the voters, it costs them nothing and they certainly will not be funding any compensation payment for the day off.

Having a bank holiday on a Monday doesn`t produce an uninterrupted long weekend off work for our local Bank of Scotland staff - it`s open until lunchtime on Saturdays.

A daft idea from Swinney.

That went through my head as well - if we don’t beat Haiti then Swinney will have massive red face 😱

Paraguay had a holiday for qualifying but I don’t believe any other country is proposing a holiday for simply turning up to the first match and no wonder since the proposal is an absolute cringe.

Aside from anything else there are no solely Scottish banks left so no chance anyone is getting that day off unless there is one for England and I can’t see them looking for a ‘participation award’ bank holiday. Also means it’s unlikely many UK companies will do it so now you are getting down to smaller businesses to swallow an unexpected and likely unwelcome overhead.

Everyone loves a free day off but this is just populist nonsense.

If you believe social media, SNP supporters are all workshy scroungers who are on benefits so I don`t understand the politics behind this. As an OAP I`m disgusted as I`ll get no benefit whatsoever from it. How about a special World Cup Allowance for pensioners, John, so we can afford to upgrade our tellies for the tournament?

Not really. I see it as a celebration of us getting there rather than a pre ordained celebration of a victory against Haiti.

You boomers just want it all, don`t you? You don’t know you’re born, honestly. Sitting there moaning about a bank holiday like it’s the end of civilisation. You want to try watching Scotland play football in the proper days, son. Proper days. Before your fancy HD telly and your heated seats and your half-time statistics served up like a restaurant menu.

I’ve stood on terraces so cold the pie froze solid before you’d finished your first bite. 90 minutes of sideways passing, one hopeful punt, and then conceding to a team whose population could fit in a medium-sized Tesco. A 0–0 draw away from home? That was a result. That was something you talked about all week. “Hard place to go,” we’d say, as if that explained everything. It explained nothing.

TBF, some people are voting Reform even though having them in power will negatively affect their lives. People can be very narrow minded when it comes to voting. So extra day off or send some Asian care workers back to wherever they`re from?
