Has a non league club ever knocked out the holders in a previous era - especially the "first" round as far as the big club is concerned ?

They said it was 117 years ago. I had always thought that Sutton had knocked out Coventry when they were the holders but looking at the date, I think it was the season after.

They did mention the Sutton Coventry game during the game, and confirmed it was the 2 season after winning it...

Hereford knocked out Newcastle
From Wikipedia:
“Hereford United v Newcastle United was a football match played on 5 February 1972 at Edgar Street, Hereford. The match was an FA Cup Third round replay after the first match had resulted in a 2–2 draw. The result, a 2–1 extra time victory for Hereford, is notable for being one of the greatest shocks of all time in the history of the FA Cup, as Hereford were the lowest-ranked non-league side to beat a top-flight opposition in English footballing history. It was the first time a non-league club had beaten a top-flight club in a competitive fixture since Yeovil Town`s victory over Sunderland in 1949.”

Newcastle got to the 1974 final with high hopes - then Liverpool deflated their balloon 4-0 if memory serves.

Funnily enough the last time a non league team put out the holders was palace beating wolves 117 years ago. Tables now turned for palace.
