After we were denied a penalty when Andrew Tod appeared to have been fouled in the box on Saturday, the Courier are saying we are the only team in Scotland not to have been awarded a penalty in any competition this season. I don`t think that`s right though as I remember Rory MacLeod scoring from the spot against Stirling Albion in the League Cup way back in July.
It`s still quite a surprising statistic though as I think it covers over 30 games. I can`t recall being denied too many `stonewallers` though apart from the tug on Chris Kane`s shirt against PT. Maybe we don`t commit opposing defenders enough in the penalty box?

I thought they meant in the league when I seen it. Might’ve read it wrong. I would say it is down to the lack of action in the box.

The thing with statistics is that there are always anomalies, and anomalies aren`t always wrong. But equally they arent always random, sometimes there`s a cause.
Off the top of my head, I can`t think of many stonewallers we haven`t been given.. the Kane one v Patrick was huge, and magnified by the ref sending JCM off so harshly later in the game.
I think there was also a stonewaller in the Raith game, when Kane was caught late and high on the ankle after taking a shot. Although for some reason it seems players are fair game for horrible fouls if they manage to get a shot away.
What`s more interesting is we`ve had at least one howling penalty penalty given against us, and a few `seen them given`. We don`t seem to be on the favourable side of those decisions either?
On the flip side - have we benefitted from penalties not given; if stonewallers not given to the opposition? Can`t think of any myself, but that`s probably selective memory.

I think it was Caceres who was sent off v Partick wasn`t it? One thing that always strikes me about referees is that they`ll give free kicks outside the box for the most innocuous contacts but ignore quite physical contacts inside the penalty area.

I think that’s because players are more likely to ‘look’ for a foul inside the box compared to outside of it.
Refs will edge on the side of caution therefore.

The other way of looking at this is that we are not pressuring teams enough in and around the box to be awarded penalties

Yeah - I was confusing games. JCM got sent off in a different game. the Caceres red was just about deserved, but the dude that provoked him off the ball, got off completely scot free.
I think, and made the point at the time, we aren`t savvy enough - we don`t pressure refs, we don`t give them `decisions to make` by staying down and milking injuries, or exaggerating contact in the box. I hate that those things work, but our opposition are doing it, and it`s working for them.
