 Top Six History

Scottish Premiership football is highly predictable most seasons, particularly at the top. For most clubs, just being in the Premiership Top Six post-split can be considered a success.

In the 27 seasons of the SPFL, these are the clubs who finished in the Top Six. For two or three it is taken for granted, for a few it is at least expected, for a few more it is aspirational, for some it is very occasional while for most it is unattainable.

Celtic 27
Rangers 23
Hearts 20
Aberdeen 16
Hibs 13
Motherwell 12
Dundee Utd 11
St Johnstone 10
Kilmarnock 9
Dundee 5
Dunfermline 3
Inverness 3
Livingston 3
Ross County 3
St Mirren 3
Partick Thistle 1

If this season`s Top Six remains unchanged (probable) then add 1 for Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, Motherwell, Hibs - and of course Falkirk.

In the above list, every club below Dundee Utd (*) is either already out of the Premiership or in serious danger of relegation from it, showing how fleeting success can be for all but the very top clubs.

(*) Aberdeen or Dundee Utd could also be in trouble if they have a bad run. I remember Hibs being 7th at the split and being relegated.

I would imagine that if you were to replicate this survey in most European top leagues, you would produce similar results with a couple of clubs hogging the limelight. I would think Holland, for example, would show Ajax and Feyenoord as dominating that scene.

Even down south, in recent years, Liverpool and Man City were beginning to dominate in much the same way as Celtic and Rangers do in Scotland. But this season has seen the likes of Arsenal and Villa break that dominance. Is this season an outlier, or is a change of the guard underway?

I think you meant Ajax and PSV. PSV have won it 11 times since 2000 whereas Feyenoord have won it twice.
