 Things could be worse......

..... we could all be Sellick fans. I know some who were at their game last night and they`re completely gutted. It`s a shame for them, isn`t it? Unlike we Pars fans, they`re not used to getting horsed on their own home patch. 😁

Senior Pars fans will recall our meeting with Stuttgart a few summers ago. The Pars took a narrow 1-0 lead to W. Germany for the 2nd leg. Manager Willie Cunningham told reporters he was quite confident that his team would be able to defend their advantage. His confidence was fully justified as the Pars earned a 0-0 draw, but not without incident. With some 15 mins left, the ref awarded Stuttgart a penalty of the dubious variety. Stuttgart`s No 9 promptly punched Jim Herriot, our goalie, in the mouth and before he`d hit the ground, two Germans ran on with a stretcher and lifted Herriot onto it. No subs back then, so an u happy looking Jim Thompson donned the yellow jersey.

When the stretcher reached the touchline, Herriot jumped off and raced back to his goal, recovered his jersey and made a superb diving save to tip the resultant kick around the post with his finger tips. Stuttgart must have known they were beaten then but Alex Smith was kicked in the head and finished the game with the front of his jersey soaked in blood.

My recollection of Stuttgart is that they were a big, physical side, rather better at kicking lumps out of our team than playing silky football. What`s happened in the intervening years. I think the Europeans have improved beyond recognition but Scottish football has also regressed. The football authorities appear to have accepted our lot, rather than work to improve the standards of our football.

Not your average Sunday League player.

No sympathy for them. O’Neill came out with the usual “the budgets of the Bundesliga gulf ours” guff that they always use when beaten in Europe.

Remind us again Martin what the difference in budget between you and Hearts is this year?

They spanked their budget on utter dross this year, thats why they are so bad.

He cant use that excuse anymore when Bodo/Glimt are beating Inter Milan, a wee team from Bosnia draw with Crystal Palace, Quarabag beat Frankfurt in the CL and other such results.
