 Heading the ball - more
Topic Originator: veteraneastender
Date:   Wed 4 Mar 08:35

BBC Radio Scotland "Good Morning Scotland" featuring research work commissioned by the SFA.

I`ll try and get a link on iPlayer later - busy until this afternoon.

Some eye opening stats - apparently in the SPL there is a 50% higher frequency of heading the ball than in the English top flight - and 70% more than France (?) ........if I heard right.

Without doing any research whatsoever, I think these stats may be down to Scottish football being a bit more direct. In some countries there is more emphasis on short passing and keeping the ball on the ground, making it easier to retain possession.

I`m surprised at the significant difference between the English and Scottish top flights.

I remember when Ray Wilkins came up to Rangers in the late 1980s he was reported as being amazed that he could just stand in midfield for long spells and watch the ball going backwards and forwards well above his head.

From this week’s Freddie Turkey feature on COWS:

“Making the jump from age-group football in England to the Scottish Championship is no small ask, and Freddie admitted adjustment was required:- “It’s more physical and there’s more aerial duels. I wouldn’t say the running is much different, to be fair. I think it’s just also about using your head – where to run and where not to jump out into places you don’t need to go.””

An Italian relative and his family were our guests over Christmas and New Year several years ago. He came along to a few Pars games with me. After the first game, v Airdrie, I think, he wryly observed that he had a sore neck at the end of the game. I was a bit slow to catch his drift, so he tilted his head back and imitated the spectators watching a game at Wimbledon. 😆

This is about the most recent piece I could find on the class action.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2025/jun/26/brain-injuries-hearing-no-safe-number-of-times-a-footballer-can-head-the-ball

If successful it will have major implications for the professional game.
