 English Championship play-offs
Topic Originator: wee eck

It has been decided that, from the end of next season, the EC play-offs will be expanded to include the clubs that finish 7th and 8th in the League as well as those finishing 3th, 4th, 5th and 6th. 3th and 4th will qualify automatically for the two-leg semi-finals but the other four clubs will take part in one-leg play-offs with the higher placed club having home advantage to decide the other two SF places.

The League are saying it will lead to more meaningful games towards the end of the season as more clubs will be in contention but the initial reaction from fans seems to be unfavourable and cynical about financial motives and the farce of essentially turning a League competition into too much of a hybrid League and Cup competition.

last season west Brom were 8th and could have been promoted via this new format. They had 64 points which is 26 points behind 3rd place however were only 15 points ahead of the relegation place at bottom of the league.

If ever a promotion/relegation format didn`t need tinkering with it was the EFL championship. More playoff games only dilutes what is/was a successful and popular format.

I can`t imagine any fan would be in favour of this, there`s already 46 games in the regular season, football has to have jeopardy about it, and rewards for success - scraping into 8th shouldn`t be anywhere near promotion. They do this in Italy, and you just want the season to finish, it`s never ending.

In terms of our league sizes, having 3 playoff spots is comparable to this really.
