PL CHAMPIONS
Enter Europe at the Champions League [“CL”] Qualifying Play Off Round with the first leg on August 18/19. Win that and it’s Champions League, lose and it’s Europa League [“EL”].
SPL RUNNERS-UP
Enter Europe at CL QR2. Need to win QR2, then QR3 then Play Off Round to get into Champions League. Failure at any of those 3 stages results in the following:Lose CL QR2 – move onto the EL QR3.
There are then 2 scenarios – (A) Win EL QR3 and move onto EL Play Off Round. Win the play off to get into the Europa League, lose the play off and it’s the Conference League [“CONF”]. Or (B) Lose EL QR3, enter the CONF Play Off Round – win and it’s the Conference league, lose and there’s no more European football for 2026/27.
Win CL QR2 but lose CL QR3 – play in the Europa League.Win CL QRs 2 and 3 but lose CL Play Off Round – play in the Europa league.
SCOTTISH CUP WINNERS*
Enter Europe at EL QR 3.
A win at EL QR3 means you move onto EL Play Off Round. Win the play off to get into the Europa League, lose the play off and it’s the Conference League.
If you lose at EL QR3 you enter the CONF Play Off Round – win and it’s the Conference League, lose and there’s no more European football for 2026/27.
SPL 3rd AND 4th PLACED TEAMS*
Enter Europe at the CONF QR2. Need to win QR2, then QR3 then Play Off Round to get into Conference League. Lose at any of these 3 stages and there’s no more European football for 2026/27.
* Note
The European access slots detailed above will apply IF the Scottish Cup Winners do not finish 1st or 2nd in the SPL. This current season, Celtic are the only team who have the potential to win the Scottish Cup AND also finish 1st or 2nd in the league. If that happens then –
(1) Celtic would take the SPL Champions or Runners Up access spot.
(2) The team finishing 3rd in the league would “inherit” the qualifying path that is shown for the Scottish Cup Winners
(3) The path shown for the 3rd and 4th placed league teams would now apply for the teams finishing 4th and 5th in the league, Likely to be Motherwell and either Hibs or Falkirk.
In short, the team finishing 5th in the SPL only gets a chance at Europe provided Celtic finish in the top 2 AND win the Cup. Additional places for direct entry to the Champions League.
