5 Million Pars Supporters on Saturday
Topic Originator: DrumRoad
Date:   Sun 17 May 14:23

Given the controversy of the last 2 ‘tic’ league games it looks like DAFC will carry the biggest support ever into the cup final

It’s a pity our Irish cousins are gonna have such a massive stadium support advantage 😤

There would be so so many fans happy to see the Pars lift the cup……. If there is a god!?

F off with this ‘Irish’ thing! It’s not the first time I’ve read this now

My wife is Irish and coming along, my two boys (both Irish) are coming over to go along, I’ve got Irish family in Dunfermline who are also going, and our own manager is Irish and will be there - all supporting Dunfermline.

I hate this association that everyone Irish will be a Celtic supporter and I’m starting to get more and more concerned that those coming with me open there mouth, and because of posts like yours, everyone assumes they’re supporting the other team and whatever happens next

^^^ Ditto

My wife is the Great Great Granddaughter of Joseph Shaughnessy whom was one of the founding fathers of Celtic Football Club and she will be at the Cup Final as a Dunfermline fan 👊

Me too. Irish wife and, consequently, half-Irish kids - one of which is going to the game. Was also brought up Catholic, although I`m very much lapsed.

I`m hopeful that our support, especially some of the day-trippers, don`t think our end is some sort of safe place for a bit of 90 minutes sectarianism.

Are Neil Lennon and Shea Kearney included in this aversion to Irish ethnicity ?

A Celtic win will suit Rangers as it allows them into the Qualifying for the Europa League. A Pars win consigns them to the Conference League Qualifying. A huge drop in revenue.

Yes, also Hibs need Celtic to win so they get a Conference League qualifying spot.

My hun loving chum reckons the Conference League is about their level anyway. He`s "fed up with the Europa League".

Irish was a wrong generalisation, but the intent is that Irish footbal fans tend to support, because of historical background celtic We all know it`s not all Irish.

Maybe his reference is to the amount of Irish flags that are abundant amongst the Celtic support (a far greater number than Scottish flags) therefore self identifying themselves as predominantly Irish ?

Not the point, there’s a theme emerging from a few posts now, suggesting anyone Irish is really a Celtic fan (not true) and any Irish voices heard in our end must be Celtic fans who couldn’t get a ticket…

It is an irritating assumption.

Five of my great grandparents were Irish, four of them settled in Scotland as did my paternal grandmother - I have an Irish passport (dual UK nationality) through her.

The club has had a few Irish players/managers over the years, including a Scottish Cup winner in both categories.

I know several Celtic fans who have no Irish connections.

Did the part of the OP get deleted where he said all Irish folk at game support Celtic?!

Someone picks a narrative and runs with it as per usual!

A team that a large portion of the support affiliate more strongly with the Irish nationality, fly the tri colour and sing Irish folk songs at games… Don’t you F@ckin dare mention Irish in your post though because some people have Irish relatives that don’t support Celtic!!

Unreal!!

As I said there’s a theme, so while in this thread the post isn’t overly explicit, it’s following a trend and for me, my response is due to the culmination of a few posts I’ve read over the last week or so that for some reason have pinpointed Irish people

what a state to get into.

Go to the game, cheer the team you want to win and go home afterwards and life goes on.

So you think these people who post on here are getting together and deciding to call all Irish people Celtic fans? Sounds like a you problem!

I’m sure there will be wee folk who say otherwise, but you’re in the wrong here. As is anyone else condemning the post.

Here’s one example found on first Hampden thread I looked at:

Quote:

Just wait for the huge increase in West Coast/Irish "Pars" fans signing up with dafc.co.uk for tickets

When you start seeing and hearing this repeated online and when out in the town, it forms a theme, which for some after a few drinks can materialise - so maybe it’s not all in my head?

So are you suggesting there isn`t a large number of Irish and West Coast Celtic fans?
Having been to Parkhead and ibrox many times since the late 70s, I feel fairly confident in saying, without being accused of bigotry or xenophobia, that the predominant accents heard around both grounds on match day is a mix of Irish and West Coast.
Not sure how that could be misinterpreted as anything other than fact, simply because someone has an Irish relative?

That’s a different argument. What you alluded to was that anyone who has a west coast or Irish twang in their voice is not really there supporting the pars

Exactly, and I didn’t mean to specifically quote you, but it was the first Hampden thread i I looked at and was the first part of that nature I found.

My interpretation, given the fact I will be bringing pars supporting Irish people, will be influenced by the wider context - which for a while has been drifting in that direction
