FIFA have concocted a recipe for a less than stellar WC - and the host nation are now becoming twitchy at the prospect.

Their hospitality businesses are already suffering a downturn in tourism due to a general reluctance to travel to the USA which doesn`t appear to improve significantly thanks to high ticket costs and hotel prices etc.

When/if the American team doesn`t progress the average Yank will soon lose interest in the tournament.

resell prices are really starting to drop in last week or so and will only go lower the closer the tournament is. Early panic buyers fed the greedy resellers but now much more realistic and many face value plus booking fees.

The last World Cup in the USA was full of stories. There was the heatwave, the water argument, Bulgaria getting as far as they did, Jack Charlton’s Ireland, Maradona coming back-banging it in the top bin then blowing hot on a drugs test, the Colombian defender being assassinated, OJ Simpson going on the run, that singer missing a penalty from 3 yards then Baggio blasting it over the bar. Epic.

I don’t think we’re going to get the same. £1 got you $2 back then.

Is that when people generally thought for themselves without being cancelled and the internet was in its infancy?
Diana Ross’ miss was as epic as the Falkirk penalty taking at Hampden.

Yes it was…

Genuine question, apart from a select few and maybe a couple of banks or other businesses-who actually had the internet in 94? I mind my dad’s mate bought an Audi 80 Quattro (I think it was an 80, could be wrong 🤔) that same summer cos we went to his house to watch the World Cup final and he showed me it. My mind was blown cos it had a wired telephone in it

I was trying remember who the singer was 🤣

Falkirk would have been as well putting her on for their penalties tbh

It seems that some countries that stage the WC finals want to celebrate the Beautiful Game but others just want to make a buck.

Every host country has done it as a vanity project, the Americans are so out of touch with the world that they thought they were making a massive profit maker not realising FIFA keep all the cash

Do FIFA get the financial benefits of increased WC related tourism.

Hotels, meals and travel etc.

Re-sale sites making a fortune including FIFA, who take a 30% cut of the re-sale price. Other sites you can add circa 50% to the advertised price.

FIFA expect to make over £9 billion from this World Cup, more than twice the money generated by the 2024 Olympics.

Can’t be bothered assimilated the masses of info there is out there on this subject so got AI to do it;

The biggest concern for many U.S. host cities is that FIFA keeps almost all of the direct World Cup revenue streams while the cities and states carry much of the cost and risk.

The main money FIFA keeps includes:

* Ticket revenue
* Hospitality packages
* Sponsorship revenue
* Broadcasting rights
* In-stadium advertising
* Merchandise revenue
* Parking and many stadium commercial rights

Meanwhile, host cities are often left paying for:

* Security and policing
* Transport upgrades
* Fan zones/festivals
* Stadium retrofitting
* Emergency services
* Traffic and crowd management

That imbalance is why some analysts think several U.S. host cities could effectively lose money on the tournament itself, even if local businesses benefit indirectly.

A major investigation by ProPublica found FIFA’s contracts are considered “very one-sided” by some insiders. Cities reportedly receive little or none of the traditional game-day income streams that usually help offset costs.

There are also tax issues:

* FIFA seeks broad tax exemptions
* Some host arrangements limit what taxes cities can collect around the event
* Local governments still carry infrastructure and operational bills

Critics argue this effectively socialises the costs while privatising the profits.

Chicago actually withdrew from hosting during the bid phase because officials thought the financial terms were too unfavourable.

& specifically

The counterargument — and why cities still bid — is the expected wider economic impact:

* Tourism spending
* Hotels/restaurants
* Global exposure
* Future investment and events

But economists have long debated whether those projected gains truly outweigh public spending, especially for mega-events like the World Cup and Olympics.

This is the first time I`ve genuinely not been excited about a World Cup, even though Scotland are in it.

48 teams is just too many.

that means 72 matches will be played to knock out 16 teams, the group stage is going to be so dull.

Then because so many teams are going through the vast majority of 2nd round and 3rd round games are going to be mismatches thanks to the seedings (there`ll be the odd interesting one where a big team underperforms in the group stages, but this will be the exception rather than the rule).

The interesting games will only start in the QF, and that`s a long way off.

oH, and Trump`s mug is gonna be everywhere. I`ll do well not to put my foot through the telly.

There’s probably only really 1-2 teams there that are really competitive doesn’t mean that they can’t spring a few surprise upsets tho so to say it’s dull I think is wrong it’s probably not helped that we’ve been on a game after game run recently that anyone’s had a chance to get excited about any other football the exciting will be there on the Saturday before kickoff that will then take you through the world cup

^^^^ Bet it happens 😳

FIFA will come up with some weird obscure medal for Trump. Something like the "Bestest Host Ever" award 🎖️

My son and i were lucky to get tickets from the SFA draw. Going to the first 2 games but not the 3rd because my sons running out of holidays.

But I also ordered and got a ticket for the last 32 and I`ll go back if we qualify. These 5 tickets cost £880 in total.

The latest money-maker is that fans won`t be allowed to bring water into the stadium. It must be bought on-site and prices will be compatible with those charged at similar events.

Interesting chat on BBC Radio Scotland this morning - the interviewee indicated that tickets are now on resale from non FIFA controlled sources for much less than they had originally set.
