At least he’d be a real coach, rather than a miserable pretendy one like the last incumbent

Is that the one who got us to three tournament finals and, statistically, is the most successful coach we`ve had I believe? Isn`t it all about results?

No thanks. He`s done , and been on a real long term down spiral
His clubs get smaller, and his league position gets lower, and then he gets sacked.

Anyone who`s passing, I`m genuinely interested to see who you actually think we can get.
This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it.

If it’s the one that took us from 44rth in the world to 42nd at a time when it’s easier than ever to qualify for tournaments then yes. Statistically Alex McLeish took us to 15th in the world with a far less talented squad.
Anyway no-one at the SFA has the foresight to make anyone other than the likes of Naismith the head coach. Drowning in mediocrity!

Not sure I`d say McLeish had a much less talented squad. A prime Darren Fletcher, McFadden, Craig Gordon, Barry Ferguson. We actually had a no bad team but if we didn`t then that just shows how magnificent McLeish did do manage us to home and away wins against France.
And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Tell Italy, Poland, Denmark, etc, how easy it is to qualify. Weren`t there fewer places available for European teams this World Cup?
I`m surprised there aren`t a few on here applying. There were plenty offering advice on squad and team selection, formation, tactics, etc.

Perhaps not much less talented but certainly no better than the current group

I don`t remember thinking at the time that beating France home and away and being ranked 15th (!) in the world was much consolation for not qualifying for the tournament finals.

No, there were 16 spots available for UEFA teams in 2026, against 13 in 2022.
TBF, Scotland qualified in 2026 as group winners, so the number of qualifiers didn`t matter

Thanks for clarifying, Stanza. There`s always someone trying to diminish anything we achieve unfortunately.

Nobodies diminishing anything but if you think qualifying for 3 tournaments and performing the way we have is an achievement then you’re easy pleased.

Do you think Group C was one of the easiest ones to qualify from for the knockout stages with two teams from the world`s top ten in it? You seem to set great store by world rankings.

I don’t think anyone believes SC done a bad job getting as back to qualifying for major tournaments again. It’s more been down to how we have performed at said tournaments. The hope is that a new manager comes in a makes a couple of tweaks to the team. Resulting in us still qualifying but being able to have more impact within the tournament setting. I’d be more than happy to see what Rafa would bring to the Scotland squad. He’s got a wealth of experience.

Rafa has never managed an international team, so it`s difficult to say how well he might do. He has managed an impressive number of top clubs, so he`s obviously rated by the clubs who hired him.
I did hear a rather bizarre allegation that he had told Luka Modric to sidefoot his passes rather than use the outside of his foot. 🙄
Not your average Sunday League player.

I think we could have performed much better than we did, the coaches tactics were naive at best, yes mistakes were made by individuals but for a third tournament on his watch we were abject, 4 goals in 3 tournaments is hardly an unqualified success. Morocco were there for the taking and he didn’t know how, he then went head to head with the worst Brazil team in living memory and instead of making it hard for them he played right into their hands by playing from the back with players that just couldn’t. Time for a change.

If only he`d consulted you we`d probably still be in the tournament. I don`t know how old you are but I`ve seen worse Brazil teams than that one.

Oh ffs, I’m no more a football coach than you but I’ve got a view and I said earlier if you’re happy with Scotland’s performances at the last 3 tournaments then you’re easy pleased and my earliest memories of Brazil are Pele getting kicked off the park at Goodson in 66. Maybe that gives you an idea of my age. Though there were a few decent players eg Vinicius, Cunha it was not a good Brazil team as their performances later in the competition against lower opposition proved.
