I noticed on another thread, someone mentioned that the average age of our starting 11 yesterday was around 21.5 years old. I had spotted last year that quite often we were fielding teams with an average age of around 20 and I`ve probably been critical of that approach as it feels to me like the young lads would benefit from some strong experienced leaders to talk them through games, take the pressure off, and help them develop.
I read this interesting article on the BBC website about Hearts recent European opponents, Nordsjaelland, who apparently consistently field the side with the youngest average age in Europe, and it`s made me think twice. The article says that they are sticking kids into the first team well before their twentieth birthday, and had achieved player sales of more than £170,000,000 between 2015 to 2024 with players regularly being sold for £20,000,000. I wonder if this sort of approach is the sort of thing we are hoping to achieve in having so many young players. I guess the only way they are going to learn is if they are flung in at the deep end and have to step up and take the responsibility themselves. It might mean some frustration for us, seeing games we should be winning slip away and points getting dropped, but over time, we might see this approach pay off.
