This sounds as if nobody can join after only one match - surely it's possible still to join, albeit handicapped by not having any points for the first match and not being able to choose a league champion or top scorer?

Stanza is correct, you can join anytime.
Stella likely meant that you need to start as soon as possible so people don`t get too far ahead
