 ISP

A new political party has been set in Scotland....ISP....Independence for Scotland Party..

They plan to contest the Holyrood election next year on the list vote only with the idea that if they win enough votes/seats they will increase the pro Indy majority.

It remains to be seen as opinion is divided.

SNP had c900 000 votes on the list last time and won 4 seats....I think... and unionist parties had about the same amount of votes on the list and won over 40 seats.

It seems a no brainier to me if you are in favour of independence, vote SNP on the constituency vote and vote ISP or Green on the list vote.

Danger is splitting the vote of course, but it seems to me that 900 000 SNP list votes were wasted last time around.

I will wait until nearer the time but any “vote rigging”that can get rid of the likes of Murdo Fraser...the serial loser, James Kelly and Annie Wells has to be given some serious thought.

Can't find a single thing a out ISP other than news stories. Is there a website?

I'm not seeing much benefit in this party in the immediate future. It'll take time to build up an understanding with the electorate and build belief that they're a legitimate option.

Me neither, only news stories. The party was only registered a few days ago I am sure they will have a website set up in the coming weeks.

I am sure given time they will set out policy and produce a manifesto but their aim in the short term is to “ game” the Holyrood elections and ensure( try to ) a large pro Indy majority.

Hmmmmm. I don't like this very much.

The SNP got 40-something percent of the vote at the last election and got 40-something percent of the seats. That seems reasonable to me.
I don't think these artificial means to get a majority will increase the chances of independence.

I should probably point out that I am massively pro-independence.

Around 100000 votes went to waste last time on SNP /SNP voting due to the list system deliberately designed to prevent a party having an overall majority.
2011 was a freak result.
Fact is the SNP only got 4 list seats at the last election despite the aforementioned 100000 people voting them in the list vote.
If a new indy party stands, they could avoid the present list seats held by SNP and concentrate on ones held by unionist parties.

The list system isn't to prevent a party from having a majority. It is to make the number of seats more representative of the number of votes.

If a party gets more than 50% of the vote it will almost certainly get a majority, so you could say that it is the party's inability to get enough votes that is preventing a majority.

The election method was designed specifically to prevent any one party taking a strong majority and riding roughshod

ISP also want to balance the pro Indy v Unionist parties in Holyrood.

Ok you have SSP ( have they even won a list seat ? ) and the Greens in favour of Independence...the SNP obviously, but in reality you only have two currently who can win seats. ISP if they make an impact will bring it up to three and match the three Unionist Parties.

All three Independence parties are political parties registered in Scotland....Scottish parties.

All three unionist parties are.....well ....not Scottish parties.

How quickly do the ISP expect to make an impact given other independence supporting parties who have been around for years still struggle to make an impact?

They might well do very quickly if a large number of voters vote 1. SNP. 2. ISP next year. They could find themselves in the same position as the Greens are currently in an essentially hold the balance of power if SNP fail to get an outright majority.

All hypothetical of course.

Depends on what their policies are other than supporting Scottish independence.

I'd not be too surprised if it magically and "by coincidence" has remarkably similar policies to the SNP.

Almost as if it's an "SNP II" where their supporters can dump their list votes.

Which isn't unreasonable given the dog's dinner of an electoral system we have been lumped with for Holyrood, one which was designed from the ground up to make it difficult to achieve a majority.

When Westminster can deliver Tony Blair (whose government designed the system) a massive landslide on a percentage of the vote in the low 40s, it must stick in the craw a bit.
