He's been a bit unlucky. First of all the Chinese targeted America with covid virus. Then the Russians inspired a group we little knew existed in America- left wing agitators- to engage in an orgy of violence and arson.
It's too early to say how things will develop but as TOWK said there is no real damage to Trump's support base by these events. He will work on the assumption that there are few votes for him amongst black voters and that rioting will cement his support from fearful white suburbanites. Trump has the consummate winner takes all mentality that he believes has made America great. A more consensual President could have expressed concern over the death of a black citizen and helped to defuse the tensions; but there are no votes in that so why bother? It's not his property burning and he is the best protected man in America.

Here's a claim that can't be contested. Donald Trump ducked out of military service in Vietnam on the basis of a dubious heel injury. George W Bush also avoided military service. Fighting is for the losers: not for men like them. John Wayne also avoided military service in WW2 then spent the rest of his life threatening to wage war on the Communist world from the safety of Hollywood.
Cut behind Trump's tough guy rhetoric and we are looking at a man who talks big but has never, any more than Johnson, been present when the going got tough. Both Trump and Johnson lead states which have not been invaded recently during war and can flatter their populace with military language and gestures, in some vague way suggesting they are leading a chosen people. Once any fighting started for real, Johnson would dig out his American passport or Trump would be headed for Turnberry.
