 Keir Starmer: Basil Fawlty
Topic Originator: sammer

It was Basil Fawlty’s wife, Sybil, who told him: ‘Why do you always get it wrong!’ She meant that he was sucking up to people he should have hounded out of his hotel, yet moments later was frogmarching respectable guests off the premises. She could have been speaking about Keir Starmer, whose latest comments about the awful shootings in Plymouth for me, hit all the wrong notes.

Starmer is keen to wave the Union Jack and maybe join in a chorus of God Save the Queen to convince the UK electorate he is as patriotic as Nigel Farage claims to be. I think he will always lose that contest since the Labour Party stands for universal, rather than British centric values, so he is probably on a fool’s errand. Anyhow he was keen to heap praise on the emergency services amidst the chaos that was Plymouth on Thursday evening. He made a totally unnecessary distinction between the police- trained citizens with powers of arrest- and the general public. It was power worship of the worst kind.

He claimed that the emergency services had ‘run towards events we’d all run from.’ Speak for yourself Starmer. At least two people who were shot were actually tending to a person who had been shot earlier: they were not cowering behind a hedge calling the police on a mobile phone, which would have been reasonable under the circumstances. They were good people doing what good people do. There is no need to demean them. And did the police actually ‘run’ towards gunfire? I doubt it: they are better trained than that. They will move swiftly to save life once they have assessed the danger and, unlike the average citizen, some of the specialist teams have body armour and high powered weaponry to aid their cause. Why on earth would any reasonable man try to compare the response of an armed policeman with a member of the public out walking his dog? It is pathetic and speaks volumes as to the hollow man that Starmer is.

The police and ambulance service do their best, and see awful things in such a situation. No one can but respect what they have to deal with in the aftermath. But they are not Supermen. They cannot, even when alerted, stop the type of shooting that occurred in Plymouth on Thursday evening. By the time they arrived the killer had shot himself. That was also the case in Hungerford, Dunblane and Cumbria. No doubt their eventual presence concentrated the mind of the killer and prevented further deaths but they cannot be expected to prevent such events. It’s impossible.

Instead of lauding the emergency services it might be a better move to question why the onus on possessing a gun licence still seems to lie with the police objecting, rather than the applicant making a case for having one. This was well aired at the time of Dunblane but to fully confront it would require taking on the landowning classes that believe in their birthright to hold weaponry. They are represented at the highest level by the monarch herself, the very person that Kei

Seems I ran out of words.

The monarch, the very person that Keir Starmer wants to be granted an audience with once a week. He should stop his cringing praise of the police- they are strong enough not to need it- and also stop denigrating the UK public as fearful persons running from danger which they are not. The UK public will do their best same as the police- in fact in the Lee Rigby murder one woman managed a little more than the emergency services. Stop sucking up to power and stop denigrating ordinary people.

Too early and too hungover to read that wall of text but said it before, Starmer is the worst opposition in years, does literally nothing

Starmer has now changed tack and having a go at the police. He says they have questions to answer in regard to how the Plymouth shooter was able to obtain his weapons. On Friday they were his heroes; now they are his fall guys.

In respect of firearm ownership the police have to answer to the legal arrangements which are put on the statute book by people like Keir Starmer when he was Director of Public Prosecutions.

I`ve certainly read first hand accounts from people that they ran away from the area and dived back into their homes when they realised there was a active shooter going around murdering people. I definitely don`t think any less of them for doing so.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Nor do I.

But there is a world of difference between comparing their actions and the response of trained armed police. It is chalk and cheese. That was why I was angry at Starmer`s comments. It`s a pathetic comparison designed to denigrate ordinary citizens.

And for the record there are the odd members of the public who come forward and try to their bit, amidst the chaos, something apparently lost on Starmer. I think he`s embarrassed by such people because they don`t stand back and wait for the police. They don`t know their place.

He has the government he wants, why would he oppose it?

I see that he is helping out the Tories again by making an attack on parts of his own party the keystone of this year`s conference.

If he was to oppose the Tories as vehemently as he does the left of his own party then perhaps he would be doing better than he currently is.

I honestly can`t remember a single occasion where he has provided a competent opposition to the government and anything significant he says or does is aimed at people in his own party.
