 Elections Across the Globe

Some interesting results over the weekend with more to come in the weeks ahead.
In Serbia the populist right winger Vucic has got his jotters after spending the last eight years as president (technically he couldn`t serve a third term anyway but was intending to be Prime Minister). A student led bloc mobilised against the incumbent administration after accusations of corruption.
In Brazil, in what will be a blow to the tech bros, Lula has retained his presidency after seeing off Flavio Bolsonaro, who rather predictably like his father last time has refused to concede the election. Bleating on about judges allowing the voting stations to remain open for an extra two hours despite his own party asking for that extension in certain regions.
In November we`ll have elections in the U.S and Israel both of which will have direct effects on us here in the UK to a larger or lesser extent. In America the polls suggest huge gains for the democrats but polls have notoriously underestimated republican performances over decades now so we`ll wait and see. The Dems will likely take the house of representatives but I have my doubts that the senate will be a blow out for the Reps, after all the vice president has the tie break vote and most of the states up for election in this cycle are ruby red ones.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

I think closer to home the recent riots over the cost of living in France are a bit concerning. The country debt to GDP ration/percentage is at 119%. Being an EU country and the fact that they have the Euro and not their own national currency means that they cannot print their own money to reduce the defecit. That decision is made by the European Central Bank. Their budget is due to be announced on the 17th Nivember and may create further waves across the EU. A Greece style bailout may not be feasible due to the size of the economy in comparison to Greece. The German economy traditionally the stablizing force is facing its own challenges.

Trump has taught the world why voting for the far-right is a daft idea and has rallied, and united, the opposition across the globe.

Which is an achievement given how fragmented the left has always been.

“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

I`m not sure the world has united against Trump - he still seems to have a huge level of support (although there will be a great deal of agreement at the G7/G20 at his moronicness and lack of moral fibre).

Perhaps these results are just the latest shift in public opinion?

The world financial crisis led populist and nationalist solutions being offered.

Further global issues such as the pandemic, civil wars and the invasion of Ukraine have led to a further shift - now not only is there a distrust of conventional politicians, there is a distrust of their more radical replacements, and people are turning to non-politicians with mixed results.

Canada has turned to a central banker, Ukraine to a comedian, Serbia to who knows what. Or even who.

Another development seems to be the refusal to accept results as legitimate, which is not a helpful trend.

The French like to riot - it`s almost traditional. Remember Danny Cohn-Bendit? But will it achieve anything other than push up insurance premiums?

Europe has had left wing governments generally - roughly for the last 20odd years or so and it looks like folk are looking further right for answers.

Le pen in France
Meloni in Italy
Not insignificant increases for the AFD in Germany.
Of course there’s others but that’s the main ones.

Eastern Europe is much more conservative than western Europe. That could be having an influence as well 🤷🏻‍♂️

I actually think leaving the EU might still work in our favour-mostly because we have control of our own central bank with no influence/suggestions from the rest of our trading partners.

France, Germany and Italy all have their own independent competing financial problems but they’re all sharing one central bank.

Interesting times…
