 2030 World Cup
Topic Originator: wee eck

The 2030 World Cup will be held across six countries in three continents, Fifa has confirmed.

Spain, Portugal and Morocco have been named as the co-hosts, with the opening three matches taking place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.

The opening matches in South America are to mark the World Cup`s centenary as it will be 100 years since the inaugural tournament in Montevideo.

The decision is set to be ratified at a Fifa congress next year.

"In a divided world, Fifa and football are uniting," said Fifa president Gianni Infantino.

It`s getting ridiculous now. It should be one nation, same with the Euros. The UK hosting the Euros is pretty much England with one stadium from Wales, Scotland and Ireland. As much as I hope it brings in revenue to improve Scottish football, I don`t get why England don`t host themselves? It`ll cost a fortune for fans travelling around the world to follow their team in the World Cup too.

If you`re going to have a 48 team World Cup, you`ve got a very small pool to choose from if you want it all in one country. Same in Europe with a 24 team Euros.

It`s fairer to explore joint bids in addition to sole nations. That`s the theory anyway. They`ll butcher the process either way.

Much prefer the single country competition.

Imagine trying to sort out visas for Canada, USA and Mexico ffs? That`ll be a nightmare. Then crossing the border various times. Absolute nightmare potentially

FIFA also announced that the 2034 world cup must be held in Asia or Oceania. Saudi Arabia have already announced their intention to host it so that`s it pretty much decided.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Pretty much decided, indeed.

Australia had signalled an intention to bid after successfully hosting the Women`s World Cup with NZ. However, the Asian Football Confederation, led by a Qatari, has backed a bid by Saudi Arabia, which has effectively stymied the Aussies.

To rub salt in the wound, FIFA has given Australia 25 DAYS to confirm its bid for the 2034 World Cup...

The Asian Football Confederation president, Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa – also the Fifa Council`s senior vice president – said he was "delighted" the Saudi Arabian Football Federation had announced its intention to bid.

"The entire Asian football family will stand united in support of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia`s momentous initiative, and we are committed to working closely with the global football family to ensure its success," he said.

The whole thing stinks to high heaven.

An article in The Guardian highlights the folly of Australia - or anyone else for that matter - challenging Saudi Arabia for the right to host the 2034 World Cup.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2023/oct/10/australia-chances-host-hosting-2034-fifa-world-cup-football

Sadly, "sportswashing" is a thing these days. Ask Newcastle United fans if they care about the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, equal rights for women, or the war in Yemen, and they will likely shrug their shoulders and say, yes, but my team being competitive is more important.

The World Cup has got insanely large. There will be 48 countries competing. How can a single country, beyond these OIL-igarchies, ever afford to host it? Not so long ago, 24 countries would attend the World Cup finals.

All we once held precious bit by bit is being taken away from us.

"How can a single country, beyond these OIL-igarchies, ever afford to host it?"

It is possible, especially since they don`t seem to care about the "no more than 2 stadia in one host city" criteria any more. If Qatar - a state with a population of only 3 million, 80% of whom live in one city - can host a 32 team edition, the USA, England, Germany, France, Australia, Japan/Korea, Spain/Portugal and probably China could all host a 48 team tournament today and Italy and India could potentially in the near future.

It`s become so big and expensive to host a world cup, most countries can`t afford to hold it on their own hence the joint bids. More and more major sports events will go the same way.

Dont mind the sharing countries, but at least take timezones into account and keep it to bordering countries surely. Belgium/Neterlands in 2000 was perfectly fine for instance, 2030 world cup without SA countries feels a bit of a stretch with Morocco as it is.

With the 9 miles of water separating them from Spain?

Surprise, surprise... Australia has opted not to bid to host the 2034 World Cup, all but securing the bid for Saudi Arabia.

Australia had been indirectly warned by some of football’s most powerful administrators not to bid for the cup ahead of today’s deadline.

given the kerfuffle with the Commonwealth Games in Victoria it would be politically risky for Australia to bid to host another major sporting event.

There would be an element of that, Bandy. The Commonwealth Games debacle was an individual state, as against the nation.

That said, the real issue is the insane cost of hosting a major competition for so many nations. It has gone past the boiling point now. Ideally, the WC finals should be limited to 16 or 24 countries. But as usual, greed takes over.

In previous World Cups, 13 delegates would cast their vote, to decide which nation would host the tournament. After the farce of it being awarded to Qatar, and to a lesser degree, Russia, it transpired that what many of us had long suspected, was right on the money. Fat, brown envelopes had been pressed into eager, grubby hands for decades. FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, and several delegates of various confederations, were forced out of office. Even Michel Platini, UEFA`s president, lost his cushy wee job as a result of an ex gratia payment from FIFA.

Gianni Infantino was swept in to replace Blatter and we were promised greater transparency for future WC tournaments, but I`m not convinced. It wouldn`t surprise me if Australia, and any other country considering throwing their hat into the ring, was not advised on the quiet that they`d be wasting their time in entering a bid for 2034.....

The Zimbabwean delegate to the FIFA congress of 2002 was so staggered by what he saw going on that he came out and declared it a “travesty of democracy”. His name was Leo Mugabe so he was speaking with some authority on the subject.
